Max Speed is Incorrect

I've noticed that my max speed is not correct. It's displaying a higher max speed than was actually reached. I'm using a Garmin Edge and had to upload my rides using the fit file extension by browsing to their location. Everything else seems to be normal.

    Hi Jamie,

Yes, we probably need to smooth the data better. The devices will occasionally mis-record a point by a few feet causing the calculated speed to seem higher that it actually is.

We have this on our radar to resolve.

    Thanks for the heads up.

    Cheers,

    Davis

That would be great as this is really the only issue I've found (not that I'm looking). 3 of the 4 rides I've uploaded have significanly higher speeds on Strava than on the Garmin device. One went from 44.1mph to 56.3mph.

Thanks and I'm loving this place! I'll definitely join up and encourage my team to join as well.

Just want to pile on. I have the same issue with my Edge 500. All data is imported correctly save for max speed, which routinely seems to amplify by about 10-12 MPH. I'd love to take credit for those wild descents but...

    Otherwise, loving Strava. Thanks.

FYI I'm having the same issue today. My max speed registered at 55.6 mph -- I wish! There were some steep downhills but I couldn't have reached higher than 35 mph. Some sort of bug there.

Still, Strava beats the pants off MapMyRide!!

    Hi,
Having Max Speed issues too. Last one was on 11/05/2011. Any idea when the fix will be made?
    Really enjoying the site!
    Thanks,

    Hey Randy,

Sorry but we're still working on it. It's quite a challenge to smooth this actually but thanks for the examples we're collecting more data to test new smoothing algorithms. We don't want to create one problem while fixing another.

    Regards,
    Travis

    Hi,
New to Strava and having fun with it. I just wish the max speed could get fixed as it has me going 50 or 60 mph....and I know my horse can't go that fast. Everyone doesn't have the problem as I know one person who uses it and says her speeds are accurate. Looking forward to the day its all fixed
    Thanks
    Judy

    Hey Judy,

Yeah, it's a problem we're still working on and it just seems to happen occasionally on some rides. I apologize for the inaccuracies.

    Regards,
    Travis
