Climb categories?

Hi, I'm new.

I've done the same ride 4 times now. Each climb I've done is rated as "Category 4". What are the different categories are there for climbs? What makes a 1 different from a 2 and so on......? In other words, what are the criteria for a climb's rating?

Thank you. I think Strava is great!

    Hi John,

The categories are the same as in the Tour De France or other bike race.

What we do is take the grade of the climb and the distance and multiply them. So, for example, a 2 kilometer climb at 4% grade = 8000, and 8000 to 16000 is a category 4 climb. 16 to 32 is a category 3 etc.

    I hope that makes sense.

    Cheers,

    Davis

So 4 is the easiest climb, 3 is harder, then 2, then 1?

    Correct?

Yes, that's correct. And there is an HC climb category (hors catégorie) which is so hard, it doesn't fit into a number category.

    Cheers,

    Davis
