  • I've tried everything above, reinstalled the app twice, and this is still not working...

Every time I change the motion and fitness setting while using the app, it makes it crash both on my phone and on my watch, I mean seriously Strava it's 2017 I expected more from you.

This really needs to be fixed, it's been more than a month now that I cannot use the app. It's really making me reconsider renewing my premium subscription if a tiny bug like that can take so much time to get fixed while all the same rendering the app completely useless.

  • For some reason, the app in my Apple Watch won't run. I open it in my watch, which prompts me to open the app in my iPhone. I open the the app in my iPhone and tap on "getting started". It gives me a check list: of five items. I click on 4 of them and turn on the requirements. One of them: Motion and Fitness, when I click on this, it takes me to a different page, I turn on everything there but still doesn't allow me to click on "finish", therefore, I can't use the app in my Apple Watch.

  • Apple Watch 2 Setup Fail - as the last 3 posts mention, the app is setup on the phone, but crashes during watch setup. The "setup checklist" has a green check mark for Location Services, Accepted Code of Conduct, Turn on Notifications, and Sync with Health, but Motion and Fitness still says "required", even though it is turned on in the phone's settings. Tried all suggestions above, with no success. PLEASE HELP!

  • I have done all the suggested steps too and simply cannot get past the setup screen on Strava bcs as with the above post, it says Motion and Fitness is required even though it is turned on and is green. This happened for me after the last iWatch update to watchOS 3.2.2, though I have had problems with Strava after every single watch update but nothing this bad. The app is completely unusable at the moment. Very frustrating...

  • Update to above post: the 30 May update on Strava seems to have fixed the problem for me. Everything now linked and working on my iWatch series 2....

  • It would be great if I could use this with an Apple Watch Series 2, but it does not work.  Checked all the specs, current iOS updates, logged out of the Strava app on the SE iPhone, deleted the app, reset the watch to factory and reinstalled everything, carefully following the instructions.  Did this with two different accounts and two different phones and two different watches.  Nada.  The start button does nothing at all.  Tried it both paired and unpaired from the phone.  I got this so I could run without hauling my phone along.

Two hours of end-user frustration with no result.  Nice.

  • I had the same issue, Strave not showing up in the privacy Motion and Fitness settings. However, when trying to save my first activity, Strava told me to allow it access to these settings and initiated the iOS Motion and Fitness setting dialog. After allowed access, I was able to complete the Apple Watch setup.

  • Right. I followed all the steps above and nothing worked. Button still wouldn't activate a run. So bored with it all I went for my run, a 100meters in I tried the button and it worked, now it works fine everytime. Might have just been coincidence but try it incase it works for you.

  • I've tried the above, but the strava start button won't respond on my apple watch. This issue started today for the first time. It worked fine a week ago. I have the first apple watch model and use an iphone 6s. Any suggestions would be great!

  • Same issue - as above. just got iPhone 7 - and apple watch 1st generation. Start button no longer works - says I need to enable. I have restarted/reset/uninstalled, etc.

    No luck.

  • Same issue as the others are talking about. I have tried Shelby's suggestions and at first glance the re-installation seemed to do the trick. However, one session later and its frozen again. I either get a start button that does nothing or a smaller strava logo which has a revolving edge to it suggesting that it is 'thinking'. nothing ever plays out though. can this glitch be sorted and a new update released asap please?

  • I also have tried all of the steps above and it didn't work for me. After many tries, I decided to do a "Reset all setting" on the phone and it worked. Follow this instruction. Setting, General, Reset, Reset All Setting. This is for the iwatch 1 with iPhone 7 plus. Good luck

  • I cannot get Strava to work with my Apple Watch 2.   It was working, but now it won't.   I tried re-installing the app on my phone and my watch.   But I get the watch telling me to set up using the app on the phone.  I get to the screen where I have to turn on certain features.  One of them is Motion and Fitness.  When I tap that, the app kicks me over to the phone's settings.  Motion and Fitness is set to "on" for strava, but the strava app doesn't seem to accept that as an answer.  It won't give me the green check mark (like it does for the other settings), and the "finish" button will not respond.  Help please, as I love Strava.  I guess I'll have to go back to Cyclemeter if I cannot get Strava working again.

  • SOLUTION!

I think I have the solution. I had the same problem, start button not working and motion fitness not showing Strava. I tried uninstalling and all sorts of things and finally, after an hour... this works.

1)Delete the iPhone app and reinstall (unsure if this is needed but do it to be sure).

    2) Uninstall the app from your watch. Otherwise it won't update properly.

    3) Setup the watch device on your phone. This was buggy and I found this took a couple of shots. Firstly I ticked the 4 options, then set motion&fitness on. The app then restarted and wouldn't let me finish! I then went back to iPhone settings and switched off Strava from motion&fitness. I went back to the Strava app, setup the watch again, this time after switching on motion&fitness, the finish box turned orange and announced that the watch was ready. Done!

    4) Reinstall the watch app and it should work. If you try to setup on the phone whilst the app is still on your watch it seems to keep some older version of the watch app and not update fully.

This is all a bit buggy and not slick. When you spend a fortune on a phone and a watch you expect it to run smoother. Strava is a brilliant app, all the better when it works consistently and you feel you can trust it to work.

Hope this works for other people.

  • I've tried to reinstall and install the app on the iPhone and on the apple watch. Still not able to hit the Start button...

Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness : is enabled and Location is Always....

    What should I do?

  • Similar problem here - iPhone 6 plus and Apple Watch 2. Start button stopped responding. Shows up under Motion & Fitness but after I removed watch app and tried to reinstall it just shows the spinning logo on the watch and says "installing" on the watch app on my phone. Has been "installing" for a few hours now...

  • Chop Socky's solution worked for me.

Specifically the step: "I then went back to iPhone settings and switched off Strava from motion&fitness. I went back to the Strava app, setup the watch again, this time after switching on motion&fitness, the finish box turned orange and announced that the watch was ready. Done!"

  • I just purchased an Apple Watch Series 2 and went through the process of downloading the Strava app to the Apple Watch. I had the same experience as noted above, the Start Button did not start the program. I tried Shelby's official answer, as well as others, including logging off and on, prior to and after the deleting and re-installing the app. App still does not start. Strava is "on" in the Motions & Fitness as required, Location is "on" and Health is "on".

I use Strava to log in my training with the NYRR virtual training for the NYC Marathon. I'm sort of amazed that with that type of support that Strava would allow this type of "bug" continue for so long.

  • This still doesn't work for me, I've tried exactly what has been "answered" multiple times with the latest strava app. Please contact me to discuss further.

  • Chop Socky is correct. Thank you.

All i did was uninstalled the Strava App from the watch and reinstalled it.

Opened the app in phone and on the watch, it showed the START button and it works fine

Features are really good for the App, so guys make it work anyhow :)

    Cheers.

  • I have iphone 5 and apple watch 1st gen

Same problem with start button not working

But I don't have Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness (referenced in official comment)

I think this is because iphone 5 does not contain m7 co-processor (only iphone 5s and above)?

So pretty stuck at moment.  Any advice please?

  • I have the opposite problem, I can't get the app to stop. On each and every run I have to wait till I get home, make sure the screen and my fingers are sweat free, then stop the run. Then go in and crop it. Lately I have had to go and restart the watch.

I think this is more an issue with the watch itself.

  • This is the second time this has happened to me since I got my watch in April. I was able to fix it before with uninstalling and reinstalling but this time it isn’t working. The start on my watch was working 2 days ago. I have tried taking the app off the watch and off my phone a number of times but i still get a message on the watch to do the set up on my phone. When I go to the app on my phone to set up the watch, all of the steps have the check mark next to them but nothing is updating on the watch. This is getting really bothersome that it keeps happening and none of the fixes are working.

  • The start button works for me, but it is very difficult to get it to work at the start of a run. I usually spend the first 20seconds repeatedly tapping the start button before it kicks in. When it does work there is a long lag before it shows you it is working. None of the other running apps I’ve tried have any issue like this.
