  • Tried all the possible solutions, but none work. I am totally stuck now and have given-up. Wasted hours trying to get it to work #frustrated

  • Doesn't work, after hours trying! Why doesn't Strava conduct proper tests to avoid this kind of stupidity? A lot of people are using the Strava app in combination with an Apple Watch and our reaction to this ridiculous problem is to start using a competitors app because Strava's product isn't working and the solution on top of this page isn't the way to solve a software issue, which Strava doesn't seem to grasp! If you really didn't notice that is has been in the world for more than 9 months now, then what is your aim I wonder?

  • Have the same issue. iPhone 8 with series1. Support couldn’t help :(

  • Get the same issue on my S3 watch - it works eventually, but usually takes several taps and have to wait and see if it's going to start. It always then goes through the same pattern of 'starting run', 'pausing run', 'resuming' (i have auto-pause and audio cues switched on) before settling down. My morning run is a short sub-2 mile run so it makes quite a difference to my stats!

  • Latest app update seems to have fixed it! Now there is the option of selecting Indoor Run / Outdoor Run / Walk etc instead of the big Start button it seems to respond well.

  • iPhone 8, Apple Watch Series 3, latest Strava app, the Strava watch app won't start. I've restarted everything, reloaded several times, toggled permissions, etc., still not working.

  • Haven't looked through all the suggestions however the way it just worked for me was on phone:

Settings>Strava (Scroll Down toward bottom)>Allow to access Motion & Fitness

  • I have an iPhone 6/ Apple Watch series 3. After eventually getting the Strava app to sync with the watch - I’m on the screen with the outdoor run/outdoor ride/outdoor walk and I can’t get any further. When I tap one of the options, nothing happens.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Thanks Kevin Madzia! I have struggled and struggled to get a decent response as to why my app doesn't start and now at last I have a sensible answer. What a pity Strava didn't come up with this answer! Oh, just about to go premium after using the app for 6 months - NOT NOW!!! Bye bye, I'm going back to the much better Nike+

  • Official comment is the first step on the phone

!!! Make sure in the Watch app on your phone to go to Privacy and to check Fitness Tracking (on green) and restart your Watch!!!!

  • I can not get Strava to finish the set up on my AW3 - I've powered down both the watch & the phone, uninstalled, etc - nothing works.  I've gone into my privacy and enabled the motion & fitness as well.

  • Same as Femke H. Just upgraded my watch to the 4th gen, tried every permutation of suggestions in this thread, no dice.

Edit: went to try fixing it again the next day, and it just worked. I didn't change a thing. If you're experiencing this problem, maybe try leaving it overnight and see if the watch fairies fix yours too.

  • I had to do this fix today. For me I had to do the following:
    On watch - delete strava
On phone - sign out then delete app
On watch - settings - general - reset - erase all contents and settings - ok to leave activation lock on - then re-pair with phone
On phone - download strava, ensure this is also installed on watch, sign in and connect to watch
This worked for me - very frustrating though as it took me 2hrs to figure this out.

    IPhone X and S3 watch

    Good Luck 😀

  • Dear Strava I use my Apple Watch daily to map my exercise but today Strava will not open from the watch. I have checked the motion setting etc on my iPhone and all ok. I have turned watch and phone of and on with no luck. Can you please assist

  • Shelby T. answer fixed the issue. Thank you!

However, this is quite embarrassing that Strava devs can't fix a broken link.

While setting up your Apple Watch (in the 'Set Up Checklist') the 'Motion & Fitness' button is linked incorrectly and should lead to Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness, NOT to Settings > Strava.

  • Talked with tech support and current Strava version latest update  (10/25/2018) crashes on i-watch first generation. It does not seem to a affect i-watch running version 5 of the O.S watch. It is a known issue for watch O.S. versions before 5 that are trying to resolve.

  • I have an Apple Watch series 2 that was working just fine with my iPhone X. I just did a restore to a new iPhone XS Max and unpaired/re-paired my watch to the new phone. Now the Strava watch app does not do anything when I tap one of the start options. I have tried several attempts at unstalling both watch and iOS apps and restarting the watch, setting up permissions in the iOS app. Still not working.

  • I have an Apple Watch Series 4, and an Apple iPhone SE.

I can download the Strava App (to both phone and watch), but cannot "connect" my watch to my phone through the Strava app. The specific barrier is "Motion & Fitness" (in the Set Up Checklist). Despite flicking the relevant sliders to green under privacy/location settings, the Motion & Fitness option doesn't get a green tick, and the orange 'required' remains. Clicking the 'Finish' button at the foot of the Set Up Checklist page doesn't do anything.

Is there a fix for this?

  • I have the same issue. Using a iPhone 7+ and a IWatch S3. Have tried everything suggested on this thread with no luck. Completely reset watch and repaired and uninstalled both apps including logging out. Not sure what else can be done. Cant believe this has been a problem for this long!

  • The app on the Phone X was working just fine for over a year on Watch 2, but just this month it does not start when I open the app on the watch.  It tells me to open the app on my phone and log in.  I do that with no immediate reaction from the watch. I have never had to do this prior to the last week or so.  If I walk around for a while 5 minutes it seems to have started.

Obviously this means I cant use the app to accurately time my run.

  • I too have just recently seen this open the phone to login screen. It seems to go away a few seconds later. I also have a watch 2

  • Same here with a series 3 - tells me to open the app on my iphone - sometimes leaving it a bit works or quitting / relaunching a few times. I think I've updated the watch OS recently, so guessing it's related to that.

  • Further to the above, this behaviour continued but updating to Watch OS 6.0 which has just been released appears to have fixed it again.
