Route builder. Route not buildable

I have over the weekend tried to understand the connection between Strava Routebuilder and OSM. The route builder relies on map data from OSM. That's clear.

But to me it seems like the route builder will not allow you to build a route on some specific roads/tracks.

An example is the Serangan island (see attached) where the South east corner of the Island is non route buildable (so to speak). Where the South West corner it is buildable.

The tracks on both south east and south west of the island are categorized as the same in OSM, "Unmaintained Trackroad". So I can't figure out whats the problem. It appears not only on Serangan Island but in more places as well.

Cheers

The OSM map data that you see on the Route Builder is just a visual. It's the infrastructure underneath which determines if you can build the route. We call this the basemap and it's a map of all the known routable traces on Strava. We usually update the Strava basemap a few times each year to reflect any changes. I hear that we're updating a bunch of the basemap data this week, so keep an eye out for improvements.

  • I have got a problem building a route. I can't see any maps what so ever. Is there something I have done wrong. I work with Windows 10. But either in mozilla firefox, Internet explorer or  Google chrome there is no visualistion of maps.

    Thank you!

  • Dear Elle, Is the basemap updated piecemeal? In my geographical area, changes in OSM that are many months old have not translated into basemap edits. Some routes on OSM are therefore not routable and some routing no longer overlays to the way visible on OSM.

  • Hi Kevin, not sure what's up. The Strava basemap should have been updated last Wednesday for the most recent changes to the maps.

By any chance have you checked out this tool? http://labs.strava.com/routing-errors/

  • Hi Elle, I'm in the UK. I don't know if this makes any difference with regards to base map updates (i.e. are they done in different territories at different times). Could it be something related to the mapbox bit between openstreetmap and strava?

I've used the tool you linked (and done some openstreetmap edits), but this only ever seems to result in fixes to the visible map, not the routing basemap. Paths / ways that have been added or edited many months ago do not match the routing basemap, this includes at least 1 "way" that is tagged as private no access on OSM, but strava still routes along it. I've never yet seen routing fixed in my area (and I'm watching quite a few spots in my local running area!).

Interestingly, Garmin Connect has the same issue, although their map is hopeless for trails, which given their "Great Outdoors" brand, is a shame!

  • For instance, here's screen grab of a map of a local area (between East Morton and Riddlesden, West Yorkshire, UK). Almost none of the paths within the black boundary are currently routeable.

  • We are cycling for Caen to Cannes over 9 days starting on 22-Sep-17 and I was hoping to use Strava to create the routes. I've uploaded the GPX files for each day as activities but only one of the 9 days can be converted to a route. This is a massive disappointment.

I'm going to have to ditch Strava and go back to my Garmin.

  • I too would love to see the Route Builder do a better job in letting you set a known route.  But route builder will refuse some obvious routes and send you off an a giant loop.  I can find no way around it.  So long rides I want to plan out a map for turn by turn notice is unreachable.  Forcing me to use some other map programs.  I live in the Denver Colorado area and it is impossible to make a route down a simple well traveled section say Highway 36 bike path to boulder.  Forget it.  It will not allow you to make a direct follow the path route.  Sends you miles off in giant loops time and time again.  Frustrating, Disappointed, I tool I could really use but totally fails at almost every attempt to make a long ride route.  Stay tuned for base layer map updates they post, but.. Strava is doing a terrible job on this in Denver for 3 seasons now, has not improved.  I guess we get a lot of annual upgrades.  not sure how they open up the routes but it is not working whatever they are doing.  They should pull rider data... Don't know why they would not.  Getting on the path from a road is a unreachable in many cases.

  • To add to my comment above. Garmin didn't work either as is takes far to long to build long routes.

What we did in the end is use Google Maps (cycling route) to give us turn by turn instructions and this worked remarkably well. Then we used Strava to record the route we rode.

  • Over the last couple of years I've been an OSM contributor and have been frustrated that OSM edits did not translate into improved routing. I have just noticed that, for my area, there has been an update of the routing map so that routing works along "all" of the edits I've been keeping an eye on.

Strava is not the only OSM based application I use, but Strava routing was why I first started editing, It's nice to see my contributions actually improving routing now...

    Thank you Strava!
