Private activities when made public now appearing at top of feed?

I often like to keep routine and small activities private at first, precisely to avoid adding noise to my follower's feeds.

Later (usually several says later) I'll make them public, so I can have a public record of my overall totals without drawing anyone's attention to small efforts.

Since yesterday I have found that when I make these activities public they are appearing at the top of followers feeds (I have seen this on others phones) and drawing attention I don't want.

For me at least, this defeats a useful and flexible aspect of Strava's privacy features.

Has there been a change? Have I overlooked something?

Thanks :)

Yes, Alain, this change was released along with the new Strava feed.

Every Strava athlete gets a personalized feed; we order the items in your feed to ensure that you don't miss the items that matter most to you. When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be added to the top of the feed, presented in an order based on the items that should be most interesting to you. "Any content you haven't seen before" includes activities that were private but made public.

Sorry to hear that this was a functionality you depended on. Maybe we can add an activity setting "Hide from feed"?

  • Hi Elle, I think the the "Hide from feed" setting would be a great idea! I _also_ use the "Private" setting for precisely the same reasons that Alain described. The main examples being Commute activities and short maintenance runs. I know a few other athletes who do this as well.

    Thank you!

    Andrea

  • Thanks for your quick reply Elle.

It's good to know Strava takes feed management seriously.

This came to my attention when a short virtual recovery ride (previously marked private) ended up appearing over a 100+ mile mountain ride on the weekend.

As far as I can tell, to avoid this happening now I have to ensure these little activities are marked public soon after they're uploaded. This actually makes me feel anti-social - maybe a rare but evidently not unique feeling.

Perhaps the commute flag could also function as a 'deprioritize' flag in the feed algorithm.

    Thanks again.

  • Why can't you just provide the feed in the chrono order that a training record should be? How do you know what "matters to me most"? This makes you sound like Facebook (which is not a good thing!) What matters to me most in a training record is seeing the order of the activity, not the order it was posted. Even my own profile is not in chrono order. This is really annoying when I'm looking back to see what I did one particualr week/month. I'm not going to new Premium as the new features are all heading towards a mass social media site, which is not what I joined Strava for. It's great to be abe to see what my friends are doing, but please don't turn your site into Facebook.

  • The new personalised strava feed is a massive step backwards and very disappointing.

Facebook tried to do the same and second guess what the user would like to see first, but it just doesn't work.

Please put the feedback to chronological like it has always been.

  • The new activity feed sucks given that Strava now "order[s] the items in your feed to ensure that you don't miss the items that matter most to you." My feed now has five day old rides from friends appearing before today's rides.  Some of these are commutes, some of them are people manually adding activities, etc.  If that is what Strava thinks are "the items that matter most to" me, then Strava has no idea what matters to me.

Today I had to scroll through a dozen items before seeing the items that matter to me (i.e., today's activities).

I hate the new feed.  Please switch it back to chronological.

    Thanks,

    Jake

  • I also used the privacy feature in this manner.  I appreciate the effort to continually improve but the chronological feed was just better in every way.  I guess "Hide from Feed" is a distant second best option to just going back to the chronological feed.

  • I agree with the previous writers. Chronological feed is the way to go. The current order is confusing!

  • Absolutely HATE the new feed algorithm... I pull it up and want to see who worked out this morning... not 4 days ago.  This is so ridiculous.  If it keeps up I'll definitely stop using strava, as the new feed is now just a giant waste of time trying to scroll like mad and find anything useful.

  • It's Thursday and I'm still seeing activities from Tuesday; activities that I already liked or commented on. I don't need to see them every time I log on. Please bring back the chronological feed so that I can share the kudo love!!

  • Seriously?  I thought reading that the chronological order was gone was a joke until I logged in today to check it out.  Now there is a learning algorithm to decide what goes up top?  Obviously the algorithm does not work as I want the posts in chronological order.  It looks like just about everyone wants the chronological order.  I agree completely with Eric above, it is a giant waste of time now and I absolutely HATE the new feed.

  • Chronological feed all the way, this reminds me when Instagram did the same and SUCKS!

  • If you want to persist with this feed by algorithm nonsense, at least give a simple setting to switch back to chronological order for those that want it.

  • Count me amongst those who want the chronological feed back. I look at my feed and the most recently performed activity, the most I am most interested in seeing up top, has been shoved a couple screens down because someone else just got around to uploading days-old workouts from his Fitbit. The statement "we order the items in your feed to ensure that you don't miss the items that matter most to you" is just foolish.

  • I too want to go back to the chronological feed... but cannot understand why I don't see any posts complaining about the new look feed!!! IT IS AWFUL!

I used to open Strava on a Firefox browser and see, immediately, the last four activities by people I follow. Now I see ONE. If I scroll down, by the time I used to see about 10 activities I have - at best - seen about three.

I do not have the patience or time to scroll down and down and down to try to see activities. So what happens? I don't bother looking, I don't kudos people, I lose interest, so do they, I eventually just don't bother using Strava. I guess they don't care since it isn't driven by ad revenue... but this is one of the worst "updates" I have ever seen on a social platform. Huge amounts of white space, junk about myself on the sides that I don't need to see when having a quick look... really honestly IMHO 100% awful.

  • All the things that could have been addressed, like improving algorithms to auto flag people leaving their gps on for the drive home, or people riding 1000W for an hour straight on zwift, or any of a host of the issues in the feature request threads and strava spends their time reordering the feed.  At a minimum, make chronological feed an option for users.  Certainly that should be an easy thing to add.

Was there even one request from a user to 'enhance' this away from chronological?

  • Strava closed the "Feedback on Updated Feed" thread (after too much negative feedback?) and appear to be blocking any attempts to start a new thread about the new feed order.

Since Strava won't suffer private, support center critiques of the decision, take your comments to the public sphere. Lots of good feedback on Twitter, Facebook, and comments on various public articles about the new feed.

    There's a petition here: https://www.change.org/p/james-quarles-bring-back-the-strava-chronological-feed

And of course, you can provide "official" feedback for Strava to ignore at their survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NewStravaFeed

(And Strava will delete this reply in 5... 4... 3... )

  • So many apps/platforms seem to throw investor's money at programmers for the sake of it, who then make things more complex and less usable adding features or presentation styles nobody wanted - ebay, twitter, instagram, Flickr, Facebook all ruined to some extent. Keep it simple and usable please!  I also note the segment search has been dicked about with so it's harder to find a named segment, e.g. if it's an unimaginative named segment so you add in the name of the city when searching - this used to narrow it down but now it throws up lots of similarly named segments from all over, some fuzzy logic has been added to the process which isn't helpful.  Seems to be a lot of glitches elsewhere too, not sure what's going on.

  • When I hear programmers say "let's import this framework" I'd like to slap them senseless. Or more senseless ATCMB.

  • You have managed to ruin the only feature I use on Strava, chronological feed. If it’s revenue you’re looking for, prepare for the opposite. If it’s not back by my renewal date I will not be renewing. That is money you won’t see.

This is not a matter of “people don’t like change. They’ll get used to it.” This is you ignored your base and they will bail. You’re not the only game in town. Most people I know have wahoos or Garmins Connect here I come!
