Private activities when made public now appearing at top of feed?

I often like to keep routine and small activities private at first, precisely to avoid adding noise to my follower's feeds.

Later (usually several says later) I'll make them public, so I can have a public record of my overall totals without drawing anyone's attention to small efforts.

Since yesterday I have found that when I make these activities public they are appearing at the top of followers feeds (I have seen this on others phones) and drawing attention I don't want.

For me at least, this defeats a useful and flexible aspect of Strava's privacy features.

Has there been a change? Have I overlooked something?

Thanks :)

  • " to ensure that you don't miss the items that matter most to you"
Which, as EVERYONE is saying, is the most recent rides.

I note here that these comments are chronological, not in the order "that matter most to you". Oh wait, chronological IS the order that matters most to you...

  • I dislike the new algorithm. Please bring back chronological. Also, I agree with the original post: I want the option to unlock a private post without it bouncing to the top of the feeds of those who follow me.  A "hide from feeds" would be ok. But I go back to original point: ditch the new algo!

  • Is Trump making these bad design decisions there in SF? Bring back the chronological!

  • Wow. Sad to say that this is really making me question if I should renew my Premium subscription. Strava is a great service.

Trying to understand this play from a product development point of view, I can only imagine that there’s a strong belief in increased profit margin from non-paying and Premium users alike, as well as improved value proposition in business development with existing and potential partners.

The fact that some users will simply cancel is not enough to abort the experiment. Potential gains, especially considering today’s belief in machine learning and FB’s playbook are probably too tempting.

Can’t wrap my head around not allowing users to opt-in to chronological sorting though. I find it likely that it is relatively easy to maintain code-wise alongside the new sorting, and business-wise the amount of people who would actively change the setting back to chronological should be low.

Surely, Strava wants their customers to be happy and recommend their service, fueling organic growth.

Is this a sign that Strava actually believes that they know better than their users (now or at least very soon), that it’s hard from a technical point of view (sonetimes trivial things are harder than they seem), or is this Strava taking a small monetary hit among Premium users in order to be paid more per user and from business deals?

From my own experience, I know that Product Owners and Engineers read feedback and my guess is that they might want nothing else than to put chronological back. It might just not make economical sense.

Long rant and a lot of speculation. Maybe no one reads this. I’ll do my part to add some weight towards the chronological feed-side of the scale and cancel my Premium until chronological is back.

    Thanks for a fantastic service.

  • Agree with the majority, I prefer to see activities listed in chrono order. If we had options to customize the order that's fine, but please make the default order chrono. Thank you.

  • I’m with Alain H, “I often like to keep routine and small activities private at first, precisely to avoid adding noise to my follower's feeds.”

    Please default to chronological order.

I vote for this OPTION too! Please add A.S.A.P.

    Thanks

  • I hate the new feed as well. I generally only want to see who rode this morning, or maybe this weekend. If i want to goto last weekend, i can scroll back in time - simple and easy.

I also use the private feature as mentioned above, as I don't want to Clutter my followers feeds with my 20 min easy spin

Please please give us back the chronological order.

  • I want to add support for this feature. I will often track short utility rides for the data but I don't feel like blasting my followers with tons of uninteresting rides. Right now I mark them as private but I hate that I don't see these rides on my personal heatmap. That's actually the reason I pay for Strava so its kinda a bummer that I could actually make a more complete one with a third party tool for free.

  • Hey Strava - Why no response? Neither in the product itself, or in this message thread, you don’t seem to react or respond! Have you ever explained why you discarded chronological feeds? I ride with a lot of Strava users and know nobody who likes your “new” feed sequencing. Is there a business reason? It’s bad for all the reasons listed in this thread. And you should give us option to delete the Peloton and Zwift rides which clutter up the feed with lots of little mini rides and tacky photos. And, as always, it’s be nice if your search function weren’t stuck in 1997. Please respond to paying customers asking these questions.
