Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Good find Oscar! Thanks for passing that along. Can those of you who have experienced this problem confirm that connecting the watch to the Garmin plugin corrects the incorrect time issue?

  • I fully support this too. Would love to see challenges and segments for swimming.

  • Would be nice to see at least the hours in the pool contributing toward weekly hours. Also another color? Orange for rides, green for runs and blue? For swims. You have recently added weekly goals for rides and runs. Swimming too please.

  • Hi Elle, I have a Garmin 910XT with Garmin Connect and Garmin Sync, and my swims aren't uploading. Is there something I should be doing differently?

    My Strava profile: http://app.strava.com/athletes/564564
Garmin connect link for the swim: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/327259959

  • Kelly: what happens when you export the swim from Garmin as a TCX, then manually import that into Strava?

  • That sort of worked. The activity showed up on strava, but it doesn't show up on my profile, and it doesn't show up in my aggregated stats (next to cycling, running).

And it didn't happen automatically through garminsync (like my running & cycling do...)

  • Unfortunately, I have not been swimming in awhile...so I cannot comment on whether anything has changed.

But, it used to auto-import just like a run or ride, but would sometimes ask what sport it was (and then usually tag it as a stationary trainer swim).

When I click the above link to your strava profile, I see the swim on there now, and it is indeed tagged as a trainer swim which you can correct by clicking the swim and then clicking "edit swim".

Perhaps someone else can comment on whether their swims are correctly auto-importing or not.

  • Ah great, I do see it now, too (I guess it just took a while to show up?) But definitely still isn't auto-importing.

Also - what does it take to get it to show up on the right hand side with my running & cycling stats?

  •  I second Arthur Kievit's comment. Great to have some swim capability on Strava but in the future would be fantastic if the lap function on the Garmin 910XT could be incorporated to permit interval training. At the moment it looks like I swam really really slowly...

  • As most people who have responded to this are getting email updates of the discussion I'd like to post this here. This is my response to an article by DCRainMaker on Strava's recent decline and cutting off 3rd party access to your data. Here is the article: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/07/cutting-removing-functionality.html#comment-160093

    Here is my response:

If Strava wants to remove 3rd party access to keep people on their site, they need to actually improve their product. These 3rd party companies are improving on Strava, while Strava seems to be stagnating.

They released a swim feature in April. It has not improved at all. Strava let’s you label the workout as a swim, but it still treats the data as a modified run. Why would customers wan’t a useless swim feature? It’s a complete joke. It is still missing basic functionality like: PRs, total miles swam in a week/month/year and even best time over key triathlon distances. (750m, 1500m, 1900m, or 3800m) Why even release it if you had ZERO intention to improve it and bring it to the functionality of the Run or Ride?

Strava hasn’t even bothered to offer the ability to upload a multisport event. Why? I have no clue. Garmin Connect seems to do it just fine, yet Strava ignores the needs of the Tri community. And as a Strava subscriber I expect at least what is free on Garmin Connect. I have to manually import each leg of a tri as well as the transitions. Why isn’t there a transition label for swim-bike and bike-run? It seems like a duh feature set but I’m not holding my breath. Look how long it took them to provide a totally useless swim feature.

The run feature is also a joke, segments can be cut by not running the full course. If I find a 4 mile up and back path run, I can get in the top 10 by turning around sooner and only running 3.5 miles. Why should that count? And Ray is right about the new layout. They have really crippled the best parts in the run feature. Don’t get me started on the fact that ‘bad data points’ that they cannot fix kill some of my PR runs as showing up in my best times at distances! I ran my best time over 10k and it wouldn’t set it as my best 10k time because my Garmin 910xt lost data over 2 seconds while running under an overpass. The look at the data shows that I could not have ‘cheated’ yet they refused to fix it or manually help me get that time as my PR for the 10k. It sounds insignificant, but to have a rep tell you ‘tough luck’ in a very nice way still pisses you off.

If Strava wants to be “number one sports brand of the 21st century” they need to improve on their product and get MORE people involved, in more sports. Nike didn’t become huge because they stuck their heads in the sand and focused on running shoes.

Strava if you want to keep people from improving on your product, then you damn well might want to start improving your own!

I hope the mods at Strava do not delete this and instead focus on improving the product I currently subscribe too. If they do delete this or refuse to post it, then I will immediately cancel my premium subscription as I only pay for it to support this company.

  • @Pietro

+1 as well. I appreciate them adding the swim support, but at this point it's utterly useless.

(Don't even get me started on MultiSport. I'm unclear as to how they managed to make it worse over the last 2 months. It used to be at least smart enough to split up the individual sports on it's own, but now it just grabs the whole thing as a Bike segment. WTF Strava?)

  • We need swim graphs, that would be awesome!!!

  • Yes, better Data and graphs. The user profile page also needs swim activities to be shown on the little calander etc.
Also, just like running where you can add the shoes you were using and keeps an odometer for them. It would be great to add your swimsuit, goggles, cap, flippers, etc and track your mileage and time spent in water.

Another is the monlthy challanges, would be great to see some like distance travelled. The Garmin swim detects your stroke so there could even be challanges for backstroke only for example.

  • This is a long overdue feature Strava. Any news on a release date for swim functionality? Other aspects of your website are excellent but this really lets you guys down...

  • There is some basic swim functionality when you upload a .FIT file from Garmin, TomTom MultiSport and presumably other watches which shows time/distance and pace/speed but it's very simplistic.

With Garmin Connect you can see strokes, lengths and sets to give you something to assess your workout.

Elle, are any further analysis features planned for the Swim mode?

  • Swim data would be great. Strava has encouraged me to cycle and run more and having my Garmin Swim feels wasted with the data I can see on here. So many people swim and many are training for triathlons so it's important that swimming doesn't take a back seat, it should get the same challenges and recognition as cycling and running.

  • Anyone from the Strava team listening? (Elle?) Do you have any updates for us? There is a big triathlete community here for what I can see.

  • Swim functionality would be great! Not only is the swim information currently worthless, the distances don't even match up with what my Garmin and Garmin Connect show. Hopefully this can be improved soon.
