Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • I agree, please add and mirror the comments on triathletes "we can't ignore 1/3 of our lives".  Strava will have great support from all the triathletes out there

  • Steven Emanuels - Try it again. Now that you have connected to Garmin Connect, it should be all right.

  • Another request for swim here. With cold weather I will be lap swimming more and running less. I need to track myself for improvement to keep me going. If no function by the time i get my swim watch I will need to stop premium and look for a site that can track all my data even tho i love Strava. :(

  • Come on Strava. there is a large number of swimmers out there that don't know about this forum.  I am sure its a feature that premium members should get.

  • It's great that Garmin Swim is being supported now but the information is sketchy at best. SO many times on my upload it does not show all my lap information is completely random. My recent upload today shows the first 4 laps and then jumps to laps 10+11. Really looking for the same detail as I get on my runs and cycles. Still using garmin connect as the information is far better. Would rather just use Strava for everything.

  • I totally agree with Stephen Crook, it's great that Garmin swim is supported but I also have the same issues with lost laps and have to refer back to Garmin Connect.  Really hoping you guys are working hard on this to get the full functionality we need.

  • I'm happy with the progress made to date - thank you!. BUT here is some important feedback with regards to  the specific functionality. When you upload a swim to strava, for example from a garmin 910xt, strava uses the total distance and workout time (including rests) to calculate the average pace. That is fine for open water. However, all pool swimmers swim intervals, where you swim a set and then rest for several seconds on the wall, before starting the next set. So your average swimming pace will be different to pure distance/time. Training peaks does this well, by eliminating the rest intervals from the pace calculation. For example, take a look at the same workout in strava, TP and garmin connect: TP and garmin connect provide your avg pace from actual swimming time. Strava calculates it on the entire time.

  • I'm a new owner of a Garmin Swim watch for my swimming workouts - I'd like to vote for improved support for non-GPS swim activity files too! Thanks!

  • Waiting for more than a year and a half now!

Strava missed out on my premium subscription as my Christmas present as this took too long.

  • Like Scott said, full support of Garmin Swim data would be nice. For me the only reason switching sometimes back to Garmin Connect is the  full access to the swim data.

By the way the new STRAVA design is great. Thank you!

  • It would be great if Strava could match Garmin Connect by at least copying GC's swim metric (stroke count, stroke type, SWOLF, active time, total time, time/100m etc) detail. GC is very good for breaking down each interval etc. Come on Strava, at the moment I can't fully move across to Strava until this is sorted and as a paying member it's very annoying!

Surely there is demand for swimming challenges too, I mean come on their must be so many triathlete's using Strava that would want this! Which would also suggest improving the multi sport support!

  • Dog pile.  Me too.  Trying to convert my swim workout to MILES to enter it manually is a pain... and there are no ways for me to specify things about workouts or see metrics.  Such a great site, but to leave out 1/3 of the triathlon picture seems rather short-sighted.

  • a swim goal (hrs or distance) per week would be great, just like the run and ride goals

  • My swims from Garmin Connect using my 910XT are showing in my activity feed but do not go on the totals for the club leader boards.  I have to copy the data into a manual entry then delete the existing activity losing all of my lap data.  Please can you make the totals for swimming show on the club leader boards.

  • Please see Mr. Gray's post in December '13.  I understand if providing the comprehensive swim metrics similar to Garmin Connect and TP is out of reach for the time being... that being said, can we PLEASE not calculate rest time and interval pauses into the average pace?!?  I'm a slow swimmer already... not really wanting folks to see me posting swim paces that are even worse than reality!

  • Hopefully someday within the next year I will have an Atlas fitness tracker to track swims, and it sure would be nice to get that data into Strava as well.

  • Hi,

It's really disappointing to see that in view of the many requests for decent swim support / multisport, very little seems to happen on that front and Strava has been silent so far letting its users in the dark. I do recognize that their is now a "training" tab where you can click and get some multisport activity but its a little bit weak. The swim data is not useable/meaningful as on Garmin Connect unfortunately. Pace information does not reflect reality, the swim activity is not summed up in the "activity summary last 4 weeks" page. There is not even a small icon that identifies a swim activity (like running or cycling) despite the fact that it existed a while ago ... a lot of inconsistency since a while which I believe starts to frustrate users, especially those that have paid for a Premium subscription.

I hear more and more Strava users (especially triathletes) taking the jump to Trainingpeaks recently, probably due to the new user interface that they provide in beta. I believe Strava has to take this seriously.

We're here because we love what Strava has done so far, and I think they were ahead of the pack in 2012, but time is running and decent swim support is a very old request. Triathletes might get bored to wait. I certainly am. The silence from STRAVA regarding  the future or not of "real" swim data support is worrying. If silence remain, we will have our answer.

    Thanks,

  • Phillipe M. comment is right on. why bother to have a place to enter feedback if your communication is not existent? Not renewing my premium for that sole reason.

  • Seriously Strava. Orange for rides, green for runs, Blue for swims. A few bits more and you will appease the hundreds who have been asking for this for well over a year. Then little steps to make it better as you have done so far with running and riding. Not all companies are lucky enough to have customers advise them when the tide is turning.....Strava the tide is turning.

  • I would like to have the swims I upload into Strava have the same parity as those from Garmin connect.  The utility and viewing from garmin are very useful - ROLF scores, stroke length, etc.  This would be a great addition!

  • It's a real shame swimming support isn't better.  Why does my profile only show running and cycling stats but not swimming?  Surely there must be enough triathletes around to make this worthwhile?  Come on Strava, sort it out!!

  • Fully agree with Philippe M. The information for swimming is limited at best. There is no way to find out totals or averages or anything beyond on specific workout. Also, while you're importing data from Garmin Connect, why not import all of the data and not just the time/distance? The swim aspect of Strava is seriously lacking...
