Mountain Bike as separate activity type or tag

Please add mountain biking to the list of activities in the app because the cals vs speed are very different from road riding. Also a count down to workout start would be a good feature.

  • agreed... ride is not specific enough. Off road Ride would suffice

  • Totally unbelievable and most of all, unacceptable that Strava is still not providing a separate activity type for MTB. This feature request has been placed more than 6 years ago.

To me it feels like Strava, on the feature side, has been standing totally still in the last 3 years. The UX has seen almost no changes, there are still features missing for triathletes (i.e. having a ‘triathlon’ master activity with the different disciplines as sub elements), etc.

Strava, please wake up! Companies that stand still are moving backwards.

    Hello Bas,

We review all feature requests and suggestions and we are grateful for your contribution. It’s our goal to improve Strava based on your feedback whenever possible.

One thing to remember, just because something's popular doesn't mean it'll be implemented. Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While your ideas are genuinely valuable, we need to be selective and balance our priorities. Thanks for understanding!

    Best,

Hi Katie, Thanks for your reply. I filled in the survey. I see the survey has been online for two years now and no mountainbike activity has been added yet. Is there anything you can say in more detail with respect to timing? Is this feature currently being build? Thanks!

Hi, I’m a vivid MTB-er and really miss a MTB activity type. Main reason that I now always reluctantly select the road bike logo.😉 Same as forcing a snowboarder to select a ski logo! I see snowboarding and skiing are two separate activities so why not road and MTB? A lot of members will be really happy with it!

When will this be available in the app? Thanks!

  • Can you please re-post the survey. I'm getting a "dynamic link not found" error and I'd like to do my part to make MTB activity support a priority for Strava.

If you include this functionality and make it easy to use from the mobile app we can better use Strava to track stuff like suspension services intervals without clouding the numbers with our other bikes. I can only imagine that Strava wants MTBers out on the trails as much as possible.

You can help us anticipate and maintain our bikes when its raining rather than miss a sunny ride because we need to fix our bikes in stead.

  • I'd argue that it is actually reasonably dangerous not distinguishing between the two. I created a route for my road bike here in Colorado and got many miles in only to find that the last section was a difficult mountain bike single track. I was running out of food and water but had to turn around and return the longer way I had just come from.

  • Fabio, i tuoi ringraziamenti sono sprecati, ormai sono quasi 7 anni che è stata fatta questa richiesta e non hanno mai risposto.

Fabio, your thanks are wasted, it's been almost 7 years since the request was made and they never repiled.

  • Adding my voice to this one also (can't believe it hasn't been implemented yet...).

A separate MTB category would allow for MTB challenges as well. The current cycling challenges are very road focussed and it would be great to have something to aim for while out on the dirt as well.

  • I'd like to see Road broken down further to Fixed Gear / Road / TT / Tandem.  You could also break MTB down further to Single Speed / MTB. Does anyone out there strava on a unicycle?

  • Looks like there's some progress on this topic, brilliant!

I'm with the activity filter crowd. There's no need to make a segment Mountain or Road, here's why:

You'll easily be able to determine the number of Mountain bikes or road bikes that have travelled down a segment, you could even give it a segment 'bias' or percentage score, so segments through cities will be 90% road, 10% mountain, and the Leogang DH course might be 99% mountain and 1% road if some psycho throws himself off the edge of it on his Pinarello :)

Then you just need to pop a filter on when you're searching for segments so that die-hard dirt fans only bother with segments ridden by over 90% mountain bike for example.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

  • Filter by Gear type... mtb road and e-bike as well

  • Bill, I wouldn't say top level is the wrong direction. 90% of the current segments are garbage or they've been flagged. Starting fresh with a new activity type would be a good thing.

  •

I think that the simplest solution is to add a new field with the bicycle
    type in its bicycle section.

Since the user every time he loads a track must indicate which bicycle he used, the track would automatically be grouped by bicycle type, even the old traces.

  • I'm confused. You Strava folks already have a dropdown menu that allows users to select activity type (Nordic skiing, running, mountain biking, etc). How hard is it to simply apply a filter based on these activities? These data are (I'm sure) going into a database. Each line in the DB is an activity. Filter by column (activity type) is pretty much database 101. This could be applied in any of your interface areas ("explore segments" as an example). Also, as I'm sure applying calorie count algorithms contingent upon activity type would be also in a database 101 class. Considering people have been asking for this for four years now, maybe it should be bumped up in the priority list?

  • My thoughts (as a Strava employee but also a Strava user just contributing to the discussion) are that a separate activity type (which would appear in the drop-down menu next to skiing, running, swimming, etc) has some caveats.

Each activity type has separate segment databases as well as separate segment leaderboards. When the E-bike category was created, E-bike segments started at zero. Any new segments for just E-bikes to compete needed to be created new.

It would take years to re-create all mountain bike segments from zero.

However, Mountain Biking could be a tag within the Ride category. The segment database will still be the same for all types of rides, with the option to filter the leaderboard by tag. A bonus would be a Profile setting to set the default filter tag for all leaderboards to mountain biking.

The hold-up is that creating a separate activity type is much less work than restructuring the segment leaderboards to handle ride tag filters. Feel free to add your comments to this thought.

  • Hi Justin and Darius - we do differentiate between Road and Mountain Biking.

To do this, log on to the Strava website, and from the settings drop-down menu select Gear. Enter your bikes in the Gear section, labeling the Road and Mountain bikes appropriately.

When you mountain bike, add your mountain bike to the ride (will change the calorie/power estimations). Likewise with your road rides. At this time, we don't provide the ability to change bikes via the mobile Apps, so you'll have to do this by editing the activity through the web interface. Hope that helps!
