Mountain Bike as separate activity type or tag

Please add mountain biking to the list of activities in the app because the cals vs speed are very different from road riding. Also a count down to workout start would be a good feature.

  • This request has been around for at least 4 years? I'm sure it's easier to implement than "motivational features"? Isn't it literally just adding a new category? Even if you don't provide the ability to bulk update rides and segments, at the very least we could categorize all of our rides going forward as "Mountain Biking".

  • The main issue I have is sometimes not being able to quickly distinguish between MTB rides / segments. It's easy to assume that a particular segment is road-safe (esp in unmarked areas or parks) when its actually a MTB trail of sorts.

Distinguishing the two usually requires looking at Satellite data or finding someone's bike type. Being able to filter these segments out from Segment exploration would be VERY helpful. Also on the converse, I would think MTB riders do not want to see road segs everywhere and would like to find trails faster.

  • Big LBellski had some great suggestions for separating road and MTB segments.  What seems like eons ago now, I offered a similar suggestion in this same forum.  I like the idea of asking the users to designate road and MTB segments as I'm more than positive everyone would be eager and willing to help out.

As suggested, it could either be done by sending an email to the segment creator asking him/her to denote it properly, but what if they never respond or don't use Strava anymore?  Then it's locked out forever.

Honestly I think the easiest and best way to do this is to ask a user after a ride to quickly and properly designate each segment he/she rode that day as being either MTB or Road.  And if a segment contains both, then go with whatever percentage is higher.  This would solve the problem quickly and efficiently.  Maybe get three separate opinions on each segment before locking it in just to make sure the first person didn't denote it improperly.

This way, instead of trying to filter whether your ride was a dirt or road ride purely based off of your equipment (i.e., labeling a bike as either MTB or Road), you can do it by which segments comprised the largest percentage of their ride.  For example, I may have to ride 10% on the road to connect the 90% of trails I ride, so that ride would automatically be labeled as MTB and vice versa.  Or, a simple choice as each ride is posting whether it was MTB or Road would also be fine.  Just not sure if people would mind constantly answering this after each and every ride.

Here are my top reasons for wanting to have a distinct separation between road and MTB activity:

    1. To be able to do a segment search ONLY for MTB trails.  It's maddening now to try and search with all of the Road segments cluttering my view.

    2.  Two separate leader boards.  This would help fix those "parallel" segments when a trail travels too closely alongside a road segment and so a bunch of roadies end up at the top of the leaderboard improperly.

    3.  Strava Challenges.  Right now it's IMPOSSIBLE to do a proper MTB challenge as you are relying on people's honestly to only include rides in which they ride on dirt.  Yeah right, like that will ever happen.  It would be great to finally have some MTB challenges where we know for sure that everyone is riding his / her mountain bike.

Thanks for listening, and I look forward to seeing what Strava has in store for us mountain bikers.

  • In regards to the Free Vs premium. I don't really understand how people can expect more features but not want to pay for premium. OTOH my frustration comes from paying Premium for several years and not seeing any of that money go into making the app better for us MTB riders. Since I am a paying user that does not do any road biking I do not care for anything relating to that aspect of the app at all. I would prefer they had their own separate activity and segments just as running is separate from biking.

  • Okay, now you guys have groups (cool). Now, people are creating groups like [single speed only] or [fatty] groups etc., but people have their road rides on there which makes some well intended groups utterly useless. It's a failed attempt to rectify all the requests over the years to sub-categorize. I don't care to see homie's 60 mile road ride when the guy apparently owns more than one bike (like myself) when I joing a 'mountain bike' group. People keep asking you guys to answer their requests for years about sub categorizing 'cycling'....Listen to your users ever ring a bell?   The struggle is real and I am wondering how many people at Strava own more than one bike?  Some of the above requests are ridiculous, but at least at the absolute minimum separate road riding from mountain biking.  I am sure another company will do it if you don't.

  • "You Strava folks already have a dropdown menu that allows users to select activity type (Nordic skiing, running, mountain biking, etc)"

But we don't have an option for Mountain Biking in the drop down. Only "Ride" or "E-Bike Ride" (!)

  • Up again!

I am not the one to tell exactly how it must be done, but I have been creating a number of Segments in my area, and I see absolutely no problem to retag them as MTB if this is what needs to be done in the end.

Just ask the community and let us do to sorting / updates. Why not ?

Elle, please HELP us get this done once for all §§§

  • One option to solve the technical and functional side of this would be to categorise your gear (someone may have posted this already, but this thread would take years to read). Everyone selects their gear already, so adding a new column or even a new table to your database to categorise that a 'specialized stumpjumper with shitty brakes' = MTB is straightforward. That solves your data backpopulation issues, and categorises every ride. Leave the segments alone, if a roadie has smoked me on a downhill with his Pinarello, fair play. I'll still be able to filter that though, as I can remove all the rides where the new gear type=road/e-bike etc. Maybe just another idea to throw into the black hole of this incredibly drawn out thread. PS. Kudos to everyone on here suggesting so many good things to Strava, let's hope one of these gets through, there are so many viable options already suggested.

  • When can we expect any change in favour of mountainbikers?

I think it is already positive the fact that you opened an questionaire, but is there any time frame that can be indicated?

I am looking forward to it. That is the missing piece for me to become premium.

  • @Dave Potter,

" In any case, the scientific functions that are the key points in Strava like power and heart rate are less relevant in a technical discipline like MTB."

You make an excellent point. This is, of course, why e-bike riding and kite-surfing are supported, but not MTB.

  • Elle, seems I can't find the post that I had submitted about 2 years ago on this topic but it is amazing that this has been a five year conversation and nothing has changed. Do we need to submit to our local mtb associations to campaign to flood Strava with comments of dissatisfaction? You have had plenty of intelligent resolution's and have implemented none. What are you doing with our premium does? I don't care about the challenges....I want a fair accounting of our mtb miles...

  • wow, 6 years, and nothing. How hard is it for Strava to add an off-road tag or sport type and change the rolling resistance accordingly?

  • Hi all, i would like to have an option to select my mountain bike or my road bike. Cycle is not enough, because clearly speeds are very different, and, ofc, when i analyze my segments, i find very hard to compare times with others because i'm struggling to understand if they used MTBs or road bikes. I use both, and time segments are obviously very different.

    Thank you in advance,

    D.

  • You mean to  say Strava has a way to search for segments? Ha what a laugh!  Strava needs to keep evolving or something else will come along to take it's place.  Don't even get me started about the complete lack of support for swim metrics.  Come on Strava, a dirt or road toggle seems rather simple and I could use a reason to pull the premium trigger.

  • And may I add my little voice to beg the Sweet Baby Cheeses at Strava Towers to give us the opportunity to compare our rides with other MTBers and not the whip thin Racing Snakes swifting up the climbs that make a mountain biker weep ..........For Goodness sake, I saw a roadie the other day that had thighs thinner than my forearms...... How am I expected to compete with that up a 3 Cat climb :-(

Pull the proverbial Strava! Do it! Do it! Do it NOW! ....You know you want to.

  • +1. Also it would avoid case where road riders accidentally log a section that runs next to the road. For instance, apparently I did a downhill super D section in about 18 seconds last month, about twice as quickly as the winner of the last national race. This ambiguity would be easier to avoid, if the differentiation existed. Keep up the good work.

  • Bill, I don't think anyone cares who gets a KOM on whatever bike they choose to ride.  I've lost KOMs to guys on cyclocross bikes but that's fine if they are able to handle the trail (usually they stick to fire roads).  I think what everyone is asking for is a clear delineation between road and mtb segments for a few reasons:

    1.  To make using the segment explorer MUCH easier.  If I want to just search for mtb segments, I currently see all road segments as well cluttering my view.

    2.  To make participating in challenges equal, so roadies have their own and mountain bikers have their own.

    3.  This will also prevent Stava from inadvertently confusing road and mtb segments.  For example, there is a really tough mtb climb that goes up alongside the road, so all of the roadies who ride past get registered on the mtb segment.  Not cool.

It would be SO very easy to enlist the help of the Stava community to help designate road and trail segments.  I personally would take the time to mark all of the segments in my neighborhood if Strava would only give me the option.

So c'mon Strava!  How about finally implementing this for 2014?
