Run Gear Improvements - Shoes

How could we make the Gear section of Strava better for Runners? What additional features would you like to see around tracking your shoes?

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us!

  • Allow shoes to be added with miles already on them. Allow adding miles to shoes without having to attach a run/activity.

  • Being honest the gear section for runners, and the helpdesk standard response to queries and comments on the sear section for runners, is woefully inadequate. At a very minimum being able to change the mileage on a shoe without having to, as I was told, "just add a really big activity for the shoe" is a must.

You should be able to set starting mileage. Set an upper limit and be told how many kms are left on a shoe.

  • I use Strava for multi purpose activities such as running, biking and hiking. I really enjoy the feature that logs the mileage on my shoes. The challenge is I cannot do this if I select my activity as a hike. I use my trail runners on my hikes mostly and I also have hiking shoes. I would prefer to log my hiking activities separately from my running activities so I can more accurately gauge my level for each activity I do. My suggestion is to add the same equipment/mileage logging feature to the hiking activity, also I do agree with above adding shoes with mileage on them and being able to edit your shoes if needed would be a nice option, I realized I put the wrong model shoe on my shoe (which is not really a huge deal and was my own data entry error ) I tried to edit  it and it only offered me to delete it or add another pair of running shoes, I could not edit my existing shoe.

  • I agree, I would like to add gear without automatic formatting of name and manufacturer and to add miles to current gear.

  • The Brooks GlyceRin is misspelled in the shoes list. Admin, please rectify. Tx

  • Show mileage for retired shoes. I have a couple shoes that I retired because they were high in mileage. Recently I wanted to see how many miles I had on them when I retired them. I found the link to "show retired shoes" in my gear list, but  was surprised to see they both had 0 miles! In order to see the miles I had to "Unretire" them. Then of course I had to retire them again so they won't show up in my pick list for an activity.

SUGGESTION: Show the mileage of "retired" shoes without having to un-retire them.

  • Yes, please allow us to add shoes with miles already on them! I'm a new user and want to add my shoes, but they already have 140 miles on them and I see no way to reflect that. The default is 0 miles.

  • Totally agree with the above comments - it should be possible to add mileage to shoes manually.

Also, why can you only select shoes from a pre-defined list - make the shoe make and model free text so that I can put in whatever I want without having to request it to be added.

  • Previous mileage and alerts when a running shoe is near his lifetime span (defined by the user, let's keep it simple).

  • Add a "gear report" - e.g. all the activities for bike or shoes.

why is that important? because for some reason (don't know why and cant track it due to no report) my shoes mileage is incorrect (by roughly 600 km....)

So if I have such report I can try and understand what went wrong.

  • Please allow shoe mileage to be editable. I'd love to switch to strava completely, but keeping track of my shoe mileage is a huge for me. So odd that Daily Mile has a simple "how many miles are already on these shoes" thing and strava does not.

  • When I joined Strava a couple years ago, my Gel Kayano 16s had roughly 250 miles on them. It never really felt the need to edit the miles that show up on Strava because the activities were not on Strava either. I have since retired those shoes from running and now almost all of my activities are logged on Strava. With my old shoes, I always knew that the total amount of miles was the Strava number +250. Easy as that.

However, I do like KIM CHURDAR's request for my gear list to be accessible for hiking activities. For me, hiking = backpacking. I use my old running shoes as 3 season hiking shoes for multi day backpacking trips. I also want to keep track of the miles that go on my hiking shoes and that means I have to log hikes as runs. When I go camping with my brother, our pace is just about as close to running as you can get with a 30 lb pack and going 15 miles per day.  But close is not good enough. Logging backpacking trips as runs does weird things like create segments and establish CRs too. I guess if no one has these segments faster, then they are valid CRs but still...

Bottom line, I think it would be really useful to enable the my gear selection list for activities classified as hikes.

  • Seeing all activities done with a particular pair of shoes. (This is good for troubleshooting as mentioned above and well as would be interesting).

It might be nice to see how many miles other users were getting out of shoes to see how our usage compares, to see what people are getting when considering a purchase or interesting for shoe manufactures to see what people are doing.

  • Let us edit gear.   I made a mistake with one of my shoes and to fix, I have to add a new shoe then go back and re-edit dozens of runs.

  • Hi folks! Today we've enabled notifications for any Shoes entered in the My Gear settings page (for runners).

Shoe notifications alert a runner when their shoes hit a certain distance threshold via an email and a notification (web only). The notification setting is controlled from the shoe dialog, and is off by default. A user will receive a notification when their shoes hit the threshold, and then every 50 miles (100 km) thereafter. Only non-retired shoes will trigger notifications.

Let us know what you think!

  • Elle, that is great thank you!

    Two comments:

It would be really useful if the mileage counts were accurate -- my gear page shows 103 miles, mobile app 129 and my last run 133 on the same pair of shoes. :) Maybe something went wrong?

Second, let the gear have it's own tab on the dashboard!

Third, it would be awesome if I could click on the gear and see all the runs (or rides) done with it.

Fourth, I'd be curious if different shoes have different average speeds -- maybe some statistics around it?

OK, that was four, not two ... sorry!

  • These are great suggestions Nedim!

If you could, please reach out to us directly regarding your shoe distance. That sounds like a bug we should fix.

  • Notification is great - now I'd really love to have that ability to set initial milage: as many others were writing above I just want to start using your awesome Strava but as long as I cannot do that I still have to track milage on my current 5 pairs of shoes somewhere else.

  • Last but not least - again as already mentioned: I don't want to track each and every run so I'd be cool if one could manually add runs (or bike tours) to the system. Having that feature my total milage would still be accurate.

  • I've read through the list of Shoe features and yes, I agree editing should be able to be done without having to delete and break all references to the activities.  The other thing I was surprised not to see requested is having two of the same shoe and not being able to select them by their Nickname so I can differentiate between the two pairs I rotate through.

  • I think it would be great to aggregate shoe data across users by averaging max mileage on retired shoes - for example, if I'm deciding between a Saucony Kinvara & Saucony Virrata, I could see what other users have done with theirs and see that the Kinvaras tend to last longer, or are more often used on road running versus track running, or what have you.

  • I would love to be able to able to view "time" & "elevation" on a pair of shoes. Strava keeps track of mileage which is awesome, but I'd love to get the time & elevation "story" from my shoe as well. A shoe with 500 road miles may not  equal a shoe with 500 rugged trail miles. Time & elevation would tell the rest of the story. Strava has the data since it tracks time & elevation on shoes, so it would just be a matter of extracting that data for the athlete to see.

Also if I I ever go back and look at a past activity, I would like to see the mileage that was on the shoe at that time, not how many current total miles are on that shoe.

And of course +1 for everyone else's comments to being able to edit a shoes mileage.

  • Dear Elle,

Many thanks for reaching out to us and seek for feedback!
Any news about the "edit shoes mileage" that we've all been asking for?

    Thanks again,
    Geoffrey
