Mountain Bike Route Builder issues

Hi, I find very useful the Strava function for create routes, but since I use only Mountain Bike, it's impossible for me create routes following tracks and paths that Strava dosent seems to recognise, not even in manual mode.

Even disabling the "popularity" function, it dosent allow to go outside the known routes. This is very constrictive for who like me uses mountain bike on unknown paths. Even when i create a route using a past activity, the route creator modify it, deviating from the original path with straight path, totally way off.

It would be awesome if there will be the possibility to create routes that dosent follow the populars paths, or if the Route Creator could just create the route from past activity just by leaving them how they are.

Thanks and sorry for my bad english,

Alessandro

    Hello mountain bikers -

Yes, we are certainly aware of this issue and we routinely populate the Strava route builder with new streets and trails on a monthly basis. Here's how it works:

We work closely with the map service that provides our maps, Open Street Map. We feed in missing data to OSM from our Strava activity heatmaps (using your data) to expand our basemap. The basemap is what lies underneath the map when creating a Strava route, and it determines all the known map data.

As mentioned in the comments, OSM is an open-sourced map platform which means if you are so inspired you can create an account and add missing trail data yourself. Within a few weeks you'll be able to see this data on Strava.

Third, you can use the error icon in the lower left corner of the route builder to report a map error such as a missing trail and we'll see what we can do to fix the error when we next update the basemap.

    View previously reported map errors.

In the meantime, by switching on "manual mode" you can create a route anywhere on the map, and will not be limited to the basemap. Manual mode is for more "free-form" mapping and though it might take a bit longer, you can use this mode to map any missing trails.

  • I agree with Alessandro there needs to be an option to allow for MTB's.

  • The sole purpose that I became a premium member was the possibility to create and follow routes live. Guess if I was disappointed when I realized that you cannot create routes from segments and that the route builder completely sucks when it comes to MTB. It's close to lying when you use that as a selling point. I just cancelled my premium membership.

  • I would also like to see some more options for MTB route building.

    1. Prefer trail and dirt segments to road. Only route on the road if there is no other option.

    2. Heat maps for MTB to help discovery.

    3. Trail segment selection to quickly put together MTB routes.

  • The strava route building do use openstreetmap as basemap and only trails that is found in that database can be automatically selected. So if you want to make the route builder better in your area you need to draw the trails in openstreetmap and wait until strava update their basemap.

  • Oh, that's a great news! If it really works I suppose I can just download the gpx of my activites, load them on openstreetmap, and finally create the right Route on strava.

Thanks a lot for the information fredrik, I really hope you're right, I'll let you know!

p.s. (anyway, i have to say that it's a bit sad that this information come from an user and not from strava support that had 2 months of time to answer. Let's hope they're working for us :D )

  • I would love to make MTB routes with the route builder - but it keeps crashing! I tried 8 times!!! an i want to be out on the bike!  Why?  here are the reasons

     1) it does not follow the routes in the global heat map well

    2) that is not a problem if we can make routes with manual mode

    3) but in manual mode it freezes - while 'calculating route'

Please fix this -  really need a rout builder - PLEASE!

  • Agreed, this needs to be developed.

  • Yes, we have miles and miles of rail trail/bike path around my town. Manual mode is too time consuming and it would be great if the route builder would "follow the road" on bike paths the same way Google and MapMyRide do.

  • I think the ability to turn on popular routes is good but very limiting if it includes road and off road routes - I'm a road cyclist and don't want to get tackling trails on it (which Strava often sends me down!)

  • The route builder is useless.  All I want to do is save a route/activity from my friends for future use.  As it is now, I have to save the GPX file and run it in another app.  It would be very nice to be able to save routes/activities that others hav ridden so that I can ride them in the future (ie. a To Do List).

  • Has there been any progress with this? I still cannot route map popular mountain bike routes and it won't recognise the global heat map, bridle ways and existing segments! Makes the feature useless for mountain bikers or fell/trail runners.

  • Hello Elle, my report is quite old by now, and as you just said, now it's possible to create routes as we want in Manual Mode (in september 2014 didn't work), so the problem is basically solved :)

The manual mode is a bit slow (it loads data for each new point) but it's not a big problem.

For the OSM thing, i tried a long time ago to add a trail data, but never appeared on strava route builder. Probably i did something wrong since it's (or wasn't) so user-friendly ^^'

Maybe could be a good thing to make a guide about how to add trail on OSM.

Meanwhile thanks for the answer (even if a bit too late :-p )

    p.s. separate bikes activity!! :p
