Route builder won't plan the correct route

Route planner won't let me plan the route I want, instead it sends me on long detours for no reason. It avoids certain sections of road even main roads

    Hi Steve,

Try turning the switch OFF for "Popularity", or try turning ON the switch for "Manual Mode".

Manual mode will allow you to map wherever you want, and can be enabled for only a specific portion of your route.

Either of those options should help immensely and allow you to create the desired route.

The underlying issue could be that the Route Builder is having trouble matching your request with our known route basemap, or the known popular roads. Please report such map issues.

  • Thanks Troy, I'll do my best to keep this thread informed.

  • Some of this type of problem seems to relate to the conversion of Open Street Map edits into routes that can be used. Open Street Map is continually being edited so that the map is (hopefully) more accurate with each edit, but these edits do not appear to translate to the routing template immediately. "Tagging" an error on the map often (quite quickly) translates into a map edit, but none of the map changes in my area have translated into a change in routing at any point in the 9 months I've been watching. The routing errors page is also frustrating in this regard because "can't route this way" are frequently labelled as "resolved" quickly when the map edit has taken place but the routing has not changed. Does anyone know how often the routing bit of Strava is refreshed?

  • Really infuriating, and not fit for purpose. Looks like you are using the community to do your software testing, rather than experienced and thorough software testers. This is not ready for Beta. Incidentally, I am a software tester working with medical devices.

I am having exactly the same issues as others are describing here. I simply want to plot a route to cross a roundabout, from Crookthorn Lane into "Church Lane" at Climping, West Sussex, cycle along Church Lane a short distance, then turn left into Horsemere Green Lane. No matter what I do, manual on or off, popular routes on or off, it makes no difference.

The programme will either make me turn left at the roundabout, and cycle along 3 roads to the junction of Horsemere Green Lane and Church Lane, or it will plot a route all the way round the roundabout, back down Crookthorn Lane, back to a bridge over the River Arun, then onto footpaths that go cross country to a point half way up Church lane, before the turning to Horsemere Green Lane. As others have commented, it plots long detours for no reason.

  • Having the same problem. Routes that i have been planning rides on for years now are impossible to route. Even on straight roads the planner will send you in the opposite direction before going back over itself. Have tried the suggested solutions, none work,

  • There could be an issue here that may be worth looking into. Can both of you provide examples in 1) location (city, country) where this occurs and 2) screenshots of the routing issue in question? Thanks!

  • The bottom image is from outside my house in Milton Keynes where i start my rides. There has been no roadworks or any change to the street layout since the estate was built 15 years ago. The middle is 10km north and is a route i travel down once a week, same again no alterations to roads. The top image is about 30km north and a regular route again. There are plenty of examples i could post. Alsoi am able to plot all these routes on the Garmin connect planner.

  • Another person having the same issue with Route Builder. Trying to map a route along some fairly straight simple roads and Strava is taking me on a ridiculous detour, sometimes across countryside rather than the obvious road. It wasn't doing this two weeks ago!

It happens if you use Popularity On or Off, and if you try to drag the route back to the road, it drops a new marker, but the route stays on the same incorrect route.

Manual mode isn't really an answer because if your route does this four or five times, you have to go back and re-do the whole thing because Manual Mode isn't good at editing existing routes.

See https://www.strava.com/routes/4125834 for an example - quite a short ride (or should be without the detours!) but it goes wrong at miles 3.8, 15.2, 22.3 and 43.3.

  • Having exactly the same problem, on local route it wont continue along the road without a diversion. I have also tried planning a route for a forthcoming trip to Majorca on Sa Colabra and it wont allow me to come down the road it turns around and sends me miles off course .

  • Having exactly the same problem as everyone else.  Planning routes along roads I've used for the past year but not its sending me around the houses.

It's not the settings that are the problem as I haven't changed them.  I've tried changing to Manual Mode but still the same issue.

  • Route Planner will no longer allow me to adjust any points after I have initially clicked them onto the map. In the attached picture I attempted to adjust multiple waypoints and the route would not update.

UPDATE: I found out that the route will only update when I toggle the Use Popularity button either way. It seems this toggle button forces recalculation of the route which is no longer occurring as normal when I drag a point.

  • I am definitely having the same issues as well as not being able to return to my starting point over my outgoing route. I have not seen another fix put up by Strava yet besides the initial turn on/off Popularity. Please tell me there a fix to this problem because as of right now my Create a Route is useless.

  • Thank you for the quick response. Will you all be able to notify us when Strava has made the update? Until then I just won't bother with the Create a Route. I really look forward to being able to build routes in a new area that I am not familiar with and then download it to my Garmin so I can spend time riding and not stopping to figure out where I am. Thank you again!

  • Over the last couple of years I've been an OSM contributor and have been frustrated that OSM edits did not translate into improved routing. I have just noticed that, for my area, there has been an update of the routing map so that routing works along "all" of the edits I've been keeping an eye on.

Strava is not the only OSM based application I use, but Strava routing was why I first started editing, It's nice to see my contributions actually improving routing now...

    Thank you Strava!

  • We're looking into an issue where waypoints cannot be adjusted, as well as a few other functionality issues. Our apologies for the frustration.
