Bad GPS data since updating Android on Oneplus 6

Since my Oneplus6 device updated to Android 10 (Oxygen OS 10.3.0), Strava lost accuracy on my activities. It's basically doubling my distance and average pace.

I already enabled GPS to be used in background and disabled GPS optimization. It doesn't seem to be different when app is open or in background. It's inaccurate anyways. Tried reinstalling the app, didn't work either.

I've tested other apps and they're recording fine, so I guess it's a Strava bug. Is anybody experiencing something similar?

Another weird stuff: I cannot discard an activity anymore, I have to save it and delete afterwards.

  • I am having opposite but similar problems since the last update.  Cuts my distance and speed in almost half.  Tested on my last ride using both mapmyride and Strava and MapMyRide was mostly accurate and strava is completely off.  Have uninstalled, reinstalled, did all the gps troubleshooting tips as well.  Fix it Strava!

  • Same as Renato. I'm using a Huawei honor 8X. Since installing android 10, rides don't record correctly, sometimes a few straight lines. I've tried adjusting the settings without success. I've got Komoot on the phone so I'll try that. I have to save rides and then delete them too, can't discard them. Is this a Strava issue?

  • Yep - I've had this problem one a OnePlus 6 since the Android 10 upgrade too in January. Initially Strava was getting the moving time wrong - too long - by about 25% (moving time would be longer than elapsed time #stravatimedilation). Then after a couple of app updates, the moving times was corrected, but distance has been consistently about 10% short (#stravalengthcompression). Makes the Android app basically useless.

I've logged the issue to Strava support - with no helpful response. Won't be renewing my sub.

  • Customer support answered me a couple of weeks later and their suggestion (turning off manual timezone on Android settings) fixed my problem.

    Their answer:

Could you also try updating your phone to use the automatic timezone setting rather than setting it manually (if it is set manually?) Here is a link from Google on how to set your timezone automatically:

Set time, date & time zone

  • Same problem as Paul Coe. Takes the fun out of the run! And thinking about cancelling my Summit subscription and look for other apps. Did all the things Renato tried as well.. No reason to use an app that isn't working or isn't working on a solution!

  • Same thing after updating xiaomi Mi9T to android 10. GPS constantly loosing connection and doubled my distance. Automatic timezone didn't help much. Wtf...
