Make Beacon Free

I am creating this post because while I really like Strava, there is one aspect that bothers me. That aspect is that Beacon (live track) is hidden behind a paywall. I'm all for Summit for people that want those advanced metrics for their running but Beacon is a feature that could save lives and improve safety for all runners.

As a male I have the freedom to run remote trails or run at night with little to no fear. That does not mean that I am completely safe but my safety is greater than that of female runners. I have never had my safety compromised or felt unsafe while running. Nor do I know any other male runners that have felt unsafe running. On the other hand, I know many female runners who have been harassed, followed, chased, and/or groped while out running. This is not always a random non-running person doing this but has also been males who appeared to be out for a run as well.

Right now it appears that Garmin has free live tracking (great but not everyone wants to rock a Garmin) as does Run Guru, Endomondo and ShareMyRun (iPhone only). There may be some other apps as well but I have not found any as well known as Strava. Unfortunately, many other running apps also hide live tracking behind a paywall as well but again they are not as well known as Strava.

We all run for different reasons but for each of us there is a level of enjoyment in running. When a runner is made to feel unsafe it takes the enjoyment out of running.

I would like to gather support to petition Strava to may the Beacon feature free for its running community. Strava is about community and I would like to see them make the Beacon feature free to increase safety for the community.

  • Glad you agree! The e was missing from your comment so I had to look at it twice. :)

  • Beacon (and bacon) should absolutely be free! I only just realized Beacon requires a Summit subscription, and I am disheartened. I want my wife to be able to monitor my rides.

  • If you have something like WhatsApp on your phone or even google maps, you can share your location with specific people for a specified time window and then deactivate the sharing when you see fit (or the time elapses)

  • also, if you have the wahoo elemnt computer, you can pair it with your phone and on rides it can generate a "tracking" link so people can see your position / speed / heart rate etc. Obviously only available to people that have that link. Once the ride is done you can set the link to expire

  • Beacon should be free and available to all users.  Sharing real-time location should be a safety feature as more people have turned to outdoor exercise.

  • There are a lot of options out there if people are looking for a safety feature.  No reason a private company should have to provide a service that costs them money for free.  If people are concerned about their own safety, $5 a month should be well worth it or look at any number of the other options out there already.  Personally, I consider things like Strava a luxury, not a necessity.  If I was broke, I would not feel Strava needs to cater to me by giving me their service for free, I would have to make do without.  That is life.
