Bring Back Old Training Log

Does anyone else really dislike the new training log? When the new strava update came out, I don't care a ton about the segment stuff, but I really enjoy the GAP and training log features, and almost started paying to get those features, until I saw what the new training log feature looks like for subscribers and now am unsure. It just looks so ugly compared to the old one in my opinion. Does anyone else agree? Any chances of strava changing it back?

  • Have to agree and if the paid version has exactly the same format as the current format then even less reason to subcribe.

I'm using two platforms to get the data. Suunto or Garmin have good logs and other data.

  • +1 - if you do any short activities, the bubble is so small it won't show anything. The latest change made the training log somewhat useless, to be honest.

  • I agree, what happened to the monthly miles total and climbing total. I can't find them any where....

  • I really only use Strava for a way of tracking my runs, nothing fancy. I think it's a pretty cheap move to take away a pretty standard feature of any run tracking service and ask members to all of a sudden start paying for it.

  • Agreed.  New format is too loose.  I used to be able to see 12 or more weeks on screen with the old format.  Now I'm lucky if I can see two weeks.  Old presentation of the data was far superior.  To insult to injury, I'm paying for this 🤕.

  • The new training log doesn't even work. It flashes up the page then when it has fully loaded it goes blank.
    Accessing via Chrome from phone

That was the only tool to see the total time and distanz of a day!!
i don't care about the new there is no need, is the same output in the calender

And also miss the calendar still on the app like so many others.....

    i don't pay for that

  • I agree, the new version training log is not good. I also do not care about leader boards to compare to anybody else, I still would like to have my own training history and performance vs previous efforts and even this is now a paid feature.

  • I've been using Strava for years when prepping for races and the best feature was the training log. To make us now have to pay for it is a pretty garbage move by Strava.  Very unhappy

  • I came here to see if anyone else was complaining before I tried to raise it myself. Contrast is a huge issue:

    - Contrast between virtual ride, ride, training ride and race is low. A ride that wasn't categorised as training/race was previously grey, a race red and training yellow. This was instantaneous for recognition of the make up of your weeks.

    - Training ride and race aren't even on the legend! I don't want to dig too hard in case a UI designer reads this...but that seems like a cardinal sin. You can't colour code with a legend and then omit some of the codes

    - I think perhaps separating multiple activities into rows instead of clusters is actually a readability improvement but it is very jarring after years with the previous format. Took me a few moments to figure out the page wasn't broken when some weeks have multiple rows. It does seem a little awkward though that if I managed five activities in a day then I'd have a week with five rows

    - Hours is no longer displayed below distance in the heading, I think most people genuinely using it as a training tool will need to compare volume in hours week to week

    - I dislike having a "virtual ride" category at all, though this may be very subjective. Knowing it was on a trainer is not nearly as useful as knowing whether it was spinning the legs, a training session or a race. The inability to categorise these with a useful label instead being replaced with a force label of "virtual ride" is aggravating. There is also a UI error in this regard; you can enter the edit screen and select for instance, Ride:Training. It saves without error but changes nothing.

EDIT: actually, it appears that these changes do take effect in viewing the log but are not viewable when returning to edit mode (it just displays "virtual ride"), so, seems like there might be chained data sources here and one has been edited?

EDIT2: Further inspection shows that it will acknowledge some changes. They're evidently hard coded to always be a virtual ride..sort of. In the screenshot below "TT#2 Core Workout" shows the default brown for virtual ride. "NRS Invitational" is a Zwift race, it has taken the outright red of a race when reconfigured to ride:race, still reflects as just virtual ride upon returning to edit. "Watopia" has taken a different shade of brown banding which appears to reflect what happens to the orange of a ride, when categorised as training, only over the brown of a virtual ride - that actually looks useful.

My suggested fix is that the Ride Type drop down menu needs to exist on the Virtual Ride edit page and perhaps a similarly banded scheme should be used for Virtual Ride:Race to reflect the different modes. That gives the most flexibility in data view to the user and without annoyance. The alternative would be to remove the visual distinction in displaying a virtual ride and still allow them to be configured as training etc, less data is viewable at a glance but it's better quality.

I don't want to be condescending, but a lot of this looks fairly rudimentary to me as both a competitive cyclist and an IT guy. I have to wonder what process these changes are going through.

Additionally it looks like the WYSIWYG editor for these forum comments is broken too or there's just a fault with how it ultimately renders the markup. I originally wrote this post with bullet points from the editor and it rendered a block of text instead with no demarcation.

I'm currently out of work if you need a tester/consultant :p

  • Well seems as I can't view my own leaderboards on segments anymore then there is no reason to use strava again. Well done eliminating yourselves from the market guys, good job, you are no longer relevant to my type of user.

  • Does anyone from Strava ever respond to comments and suggestions on here or is this just a forum for introspective whingeing?

  • No. Strava does not ever look at or respond to feedback we give them. It is time to start blasting their CEO's mailbox regularly.

  • Not only Strava doesn't ever look at feedback posted here, but they seem to have started heavily moderating any new posts.

  • The benefit of the old training log was that you could see multiple weeks at a glance! Now I can only fit a week or two on the screen at a time. Please bring back the old log!
