Is relative effort calculated in a different way?

Looking at my recent two training with comparable efforts in my opinion, Strava gave one RE 132 (6.5M, AVE HR 160) and the other one 34 (8M, AVE HR 154)? I don't get it unless it's heavy on Max HR, which does have few spots reached Zone 4 in the first training. Does it make so much difference? Thanks.

  • The difference is because of more time spent in upper zones in one run compared to the other which is more of a steady effort.

  • Did you change anything in your settings related to your HR zones? I did, and I saw the same thing happen. Originally, I was using the default zones calculated by strava. When I put in my own zones, my relative effort numbers dropped. The relative effort number is based on time in your  "strava heart rate zones," so if you change those, the relative effort number will change.

  • Thanks Johan and Jeff. I did updated HR zone. That makes sense.

  • Honestly, it's quite ridiculous. I've updated my HR zones to a lower level, so now I spend more time in the higher HR zones. Despite that, in very similar activites, with even more power outpout now, I get around 60% less relative effort than last summer. This new algorithm is making impossible for me to compare my fitness level with previous years.
