Duplicate entries of Strava data in Health

When using the Strava and Apple Health integration, some Strava activity data is syncing twice in Apple Health. Troubleshooting this problem is difficult and hard to reproduce. In the meantime, below are steps that may temporarily resolve the duplicates:

  1. In Health, turn off all sources for each of the data types (Active Calories, Cycling Distance, Walking + Running Distance, Workouts). Close the Health app and the Strava app.
  2. Start the Health app again and turn all Strava sources back on, including the Workouts option.
  3. Open the Strava app, go to the "You" feed and pull down to refresh. Then scroll down through that feed to view past activities. This allows your data to be pulled from Strava and passed to the Health app.
  4. If that doesn't work, delete and reinstall the Strava app (when prompted to remove Health-related data, say yes). Go to settings after reinstalling Strava and enable Health sharing.

  • This seems insane to me that Strava has not fixed this.

FYI if you upload your rides from a third party source it seems to avoid the duplicates. I have been using a wahoo elemnt Bolt. When it auto uploads to strava the duplicates don't occur. Unfortunately the auto upload doesn't always work. When it fails then I have to upload manually and of course the duplicates are created.

  • See what's weird is I have the same setup. I just tend to use Strava because the Wahoo element seems to overestimate my calories by a long shot. I would completely ditch Strava's HealthKit integration since it's so terrible, but it's the only one that accurately shows calories. It just writes a crap ton of stupid duplicates.

  • You know. You could just have a single button that initiates the write to HealthKit if you can't automatically seem to write yourself without duplicating data.

  • Strava just wrote my 15 mile ride this morning 5 freaking times and made HealthKit think I biked 75 miles.

I can't believe this is broken still.

  • And this is after following the steps above. I was trying to fix one workout, and then starve went and rewrote every. single. workout I've done for the past month.

  • I'd love for this to be fixed, too. At the moment, the only duplication I'm seeing is in rides I take in Cyclemeter. I have Cyclemeter set up to automatically export to Strava. But Strava is then adding multiple entries (not just duplicates, but sometimes triplicates) of those activities from Cyclemeter to the Health app. I'm not quite sure if this is the same issue everyone else is having, so I've filed a ticket with Strava; if it's separate, I'll update this thread here.

  • Also having this problem. I could easily believe it's when I edit the rides, as I end up changing either the bike or the title of pretty much every ride. Strava folks, if there's anything else I can helpfully send you in the way of diagnostics to resolve this, please just let me know.

  • Is there any update on this? I get these duplicates basically every week.

  • How is this still not fixed? No way I am renewing my Strava sub if this is just getting ignored month after month! #AthletesUnfiltered

  • Is it my imagination, or has this been fixed with iOS 11? Haven't had any duplicates since the upgrade.

  • I'm not seeing any difference since upgrading my iPhone SE to iOS 11; dupes are still there, same as before. (Maybe you got lucky, Simon Driver!)

  • Nope, I rode yesterday, and again ended up with two entries for the same ride (I still suspect it's related to the renaming from Morning Ride to whatever.
A sleep app I use occasionally does the same thing, but it is not an app that sleep or in bed entries gets renamed.

  • Nope, still there. I get triplicate entires regular as clockwork after iOS 11 upgrade. I’m not sure how anyone can say this is difficult to replicate?!

  • I raised it again with Strava support only the other day, they admitted they knew that the issue still exists. Simply edit your Strava title, add a photo, etc in the mobile app and a duplicate will get written to Healthkit every time.

I can't believe that it's THAT difficult to fix this if they could be bothered. I use other apps such as Concept2's ERGdata for logging my rowing data and you can edit titles in that without the app going crazy and writing to Apple Health again.

Strava raised $18.5 million of funding back in 2014 and has a healthy base of Premium subs. You really do have to wonder what the hell is going on over there sometimes. Amateur hour!

  • What if this is actually an Apple problem and not a Strava problem? When data for a particular activity is edited then a duplicate UUID for that activity should be generated. It's up to the receiving app to recognize the duplicate and to use and display only the most recent data.

  • Does it matter whose fault it is? Every fitness app I’ve used, including Withings/Health Mate and Runkeeper, fixed the duplicates issue within a few weeks, as soon as Apple Health integration was added years ago. Strava is going on 2.5+ years without doing anything about it.

  • I've moved to Android and couldn't be happier honestly. Strava works great on my Android phone, and I just ordered a Pixel 2 XL - can't wait to try it out with Strava! Google Fit instantly updates my data, correctly - the FIRST time, EVERY time.

I do believe it's Apple's fault more than Strava's. iOS is too restrictive and makes devs jump through hoops to make background [ANYTHING] work correctly. No thanks.

  • I couldn't agree more with Phong Le here. I'm a software developer myself and spent this morning myself working around bugs in a toolkit. I could blame the toolkit, and eventually, it'll get fixed, but in the interim I have users that could care less where the fault lies, they just want the software to work. I'm concerned that Strava seems focused on adding more social aspects while fixes like this and other more useful enhancements seem to be delayed indefinitely. Turn by turn directions? Logging cadence information? Easily view avg speed/cadence/power etc while moving. I'm still hoping these aspects will be addressed some day.

  • It makes a difference. If it's an Apple problem then any Strava fix will be a temporary kludge, not a permanent solution. I suspect that's what other developers have done. In any event, I don't know any of this to be true, it was just a thought.

  • I think that Apple should add some rules in code of the Health app, that data in the same time frame and with the same size, should be used and displayed only ones!
    Not that difficult I guess!?

  • Strava is still writing duplicate entires to Apple Health. Any help out there?

  • It's been a year since this post, and I still have this issue. This is absolutely core functionality of Strava, and should have been fixed a long while ago. (Ditto for Strava's overly optimistic estimates on elevation data.) And it's not as if I am a freeloader, I have been a paying member ever since downloading the app precisely to support its continued development.

  • the end of 2017 is near...

  • How is this still a bug??? Really frustrating and over 1 year on still not working...

  • Strava - an update would be great! Even if its not good news - Just say something.

  • This issue is particularly frustrating for me. As a result I've canceled my Strava membership and will remain on the free tier until a fix has been rolled out.

  • I canceled my premium subscription because of this bug

  • Good for you. I think I will too.

Unfortunately, going by Strava’s virtual silence one the issue, they don’t seem to care.

    Mike D

  • I've also canceled my subscription.

  • here's an exchange i had with them in June... Still nothing:

It's been over a year now that the activities duplicate, triplicate, even sometimes quadruplicate in the health app. It's maddening, and I am about to cancel my subscription

    Hi David,

Thank you for your message. We're currently experiencing an issue that is causing Strava activities to appear twice in Apple Health. Unfortunately, troubleshooting these types of problems with the Health app is very difficult and in most cases we're unable to reproduce the issue. We are working towards a fix, but below are steps you can try to resolve the problem.
In Health, turn off all sources for each of the data types (Active Calories, Cycling Distance, Walking + Running Distance, Workouts).

Close the Health app and the Strava app.

Start Health app again and turn all Strava sources back on, including the Workouts option.

Start up Strava, go to the Me feed and pull down to refresh. Then scroll down through that feed to view past activities which allows that data to be pulled from the Strava servers and passed into the Health app.

If that doesn't work, you may have to delete and reinstall the Strava app. You won't lose any data if you do this because it's all stored on the Strava servers (and when prompted to remove Health related data, say yes). To get entries back in to Health app, go to settings after reinstalling Strava and enable Health sharing.

    Some other observations:
    1. Editing the activity after saving it will sometimes trigger the duplicate activity. This includes changing your gear and cropping the activity.
    2. Uploading a manual activity to Strava and viewing the feed can clear out some of the duplications in Health.

You can also "Follow" this Known Issue to receive email updates as they become available. (https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/206393444-Duplicate-entries-of-Strava-data-in-Health)

I hope this helps! Thanks very much for your patience.

    Hello Camilla,

I have done all these steps multiple times and follow (the choir of complaints) at the Known Issue article.

It’s disingenuous and frankly insulting to say “We’re currently experiencing an issue that is causing” duplicate entries. This feature has been broken for 8 months, for the entire time since the integration was set-up with the new ios. It has never worked as far as I know, and is a flaw, not a bug.

A real explanation for what is the problem and an honest time line for a “Non-Beta” version would be appreciated by all and would save Strava a lot of grief and damage to the app and service’s reputation. There’s a lot of complaining in a lot of places about this issue, and it’s not good for the long term for you guys.

    Hi David,

Thank you for getting back to me and I do apologize for the frustration. We are aware that this has been an issue for some time and plans to address it are on our radar for the coming months. We do have a lot to prioritize so unfortunately, I am unable to provide any further timeline for a fix.

We appreciate your continued patience and understanding.
