Duplicate entries of Strava data in Health

When using the Strava and Apple Health integration, some Strava activity data is syncing twice in Apple Health. Troubleshooting this problem is difficult and hard to reproduce. Fixing the Strava and Apple Health integration is planned for 2018. In the meantime, below are steps that may temporarily resolve the duplicates:

  1. In Health, turn off all sources for each of the data types (Active Calories, Cycling Distance, Walking + Running Distance, Workouts). Close the Health app and the Strava app.
  2. Start the Health app again and turn all Strava sources back on, including the Workouts option.
  3. Open the Strava app, go to the "You" feed and pull down to refresh. Then scroll down through that feed to view past activities. This allows your data to be pulled from Strava and passed to the Health app.
  4. If that doesn't work, delete and reinstall the Strava app (when prompted to remove Health-related data, say yes). Go to settings after reinstalling Strava and enable Health sharing.

  • Do we have a resolution on this yet?? We are almost three full months into 2018. I would like to use Strava, but this is the reason I stopped using it a few years back.

  • Seems like this should be a pretty straightforward bug to fix; just need to keep track of strava activity id for each workout that's pushed to HealthKit, and then update rather than adding again if that id already exists. According to apple's [docs](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkobject/1615721-uuid), the best way to do this would be to set the `.metadata` property of the workout (or other healthkit object) to include the strava activity id in its `HKMetadataKeyExternalUUID` key. You'd then [look for the existing activity](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkquery/1614780-predicateforobjects) before pushing the data to HealthKit a second time.

@Elle-Anderson I assume there's not any way for me as a non-employee to contribute code to fix bugs like this?

  • Dear Strava, you are not able to fix this problem for YEARS?

  • I pay for strava and this bug is a deal breaker. I will cancel my subscription if this is not fixed. It happens nearly every time I record a workout with strava on the watch or the phone. Please fix this.

  • I too would like to see some action here...

  • Strava don’t give a monkeys 2 years of this. Going to just start using the Apple health app. Big shame.

  • 2018 and this is still happening... Time to try another app. I regret having recorded more than 100 workouts over the last year, that are now not possible to transfer elsewhere...
@ Strava: What’s your excuse for not offering a solution?

  • I cancelled my subscription and I will not use Strava until this problem is fixed. Let's see what alternatives the market offers.

  • It's been a year since this post, and I still have this issue. This is absolutely core functionality of Strava, and should have been fixed a long while ago. (Ditto for Strava's overly optimistic estimates on elevation data.) And it's not as if I am a freeloader, I have been a paying member ever since downloading the app precisely to support its continued development.

  • Deleting/reinstalling the app or cancelling each duplicate has become a real nuisance. I am now thinking of canceling my subscription and move to another app.

  • Duplicate entries are still alive and well in the latest version. Deleting duplicate, triplicate and sometime quadruple entires is sadly still the norm for my post-ride routine. Strava are sadly more interested in implementing new social media functionality that nobody actually wants.

  • October 2018, iOS 12 and I’m still getting duplicated entries...

  • Customer service told me in October to be patient, and that they were working on a solution, but I'm stuill waiting and paying for this subpar product.

  • I'm getting duplicate entries of Strava data in Apple Health.
Just joined Strava and any historical data I uploaded via files is fine but any new rides added from Garmin are being duplicated in Health.
It seems to duplicate only when I open the Strava App, although I've not checked this observation.

  • Likewise, this has been ongoing for months and I'm getting very tired of it all. This in addition to the lack of basics on a premium account, like route finding, has definitely made up my mind. There is little to no reason to be paying for a service where they can't get the basics right.

  • I've done some further "testing" and the duplication occurs when the ride is closed in the Strava app (not even saving the ride), closed after viewing the ride.

So in summary he initial ride is saved to health when the Strava app is first opened, a duplicate is saved after viewing the ride in the Starva app, but only when you first view the ride, subsequent viewing does not seem to save further copies of the ride to the health app.!

  • I too have cancelled my subscription.

  • I will note that, for me, duplicated Strava entries proliferated in Health - often many more than just 2 copies of same workout (up to 6 in some cases). Deleting and re-installing Strava does seem to have cleaned it up, at least for now.

I note that Strava has been working on this issue for about a month now. Prognosis?

  • This issue has been happening since much earlier than October. I started using Strava in May and already experienced this issue. At the time, there was an open KB article saying to just reinstall the app if it happened, with no indication that they were working on it.

I never go back and edit my activities. They get duplicated completely at random every few weeks/months, going back years of imported data. The duplication affects activities imported from Runkeeper as well as activities recorded directly from Strava. It doesn’t matter.

The problem seems to occur most frequently when installing a new version of the app, which may then pull activities back onto the phone and duplicate them. But I’ve seen duplication occur completely at random as well.

Every fitness app I’ve used that used to cause duplicates has fixed them within a few weeks. Except Strava. Over a year and still going.

  • Hi guys who've cancelled your subscriptions - I too was frustrated by this bug, and I've gone back to using Cyclemeter which you can configure to auto-upload to Strava. This seems to have solved the problem for me.

EDIT: what I mean is, I record the workout in cyclemeter which then writes to HealthKit and strava. It takes the Strava --> HealthKit issue out of the equation altogether.

  • Also have this issue. Use Strava with Garmin Connect and Strava with Zwift. Duplicate entries for Apple Health on iPhone 6s. Frustrating.

  • This is a joke, still happening after two years. It’s why I cancelled premium, spend 5 minutes a day rooting through sources deleting duplicate rides or my Apple Heath data is ruined. 2 years and no fix. I’ve had two iPhone and three Apple watches since and it’s still broken.

  • How is this still a bug??? Really frustrating and over 1 year on still not working...

  • This is very easy to replicate and the clue to the problem is within Apple's activity app.

When you open Strava on your iOS device and scroll past your activity, this sends the "Workout" to Apple Health. If you look inside the Activity App, you'll see the "Workout" listed. However the active and total calorie field remain blank.

Open Strava again on your iOS device and open the activity to see the details. This sends the "Workout" again to Apple Health. Look inside the Activity App and you'll see the active and total calorie fields will be filled in. However, the activity will appear as a duplicate in the Apple Health App.

I can replicate this every time.

  • In October of 2016 Elle Anderson said: "Fixing the Apple Health <> Strava integration is planned for 2017."

Nine months later, it's still broken.

    What a shame.

  • Can we please fix this

  • Does it matter whose fault it is? Every fitness app I’ve used, including Withings/Health Mate and Runkeeper, fixed the duplicates issue within a few weeks, as soon as Apple Health integration was added years ago. Strava is going on 2.5+ years without doing anything about it.

  • Strava - an update would be great! Even if its not good news - Just say something.

  • To let everyone on this thread know: we feel your frustration and work is ongoing to try and resolve the duplicate entries so that they no longer occur. Last I heard, the issue was more complicated than originally anticipated. I'll share more news as soon as I receive it.

  • I use Strava with Garmin Connect (iPhone) and it seems whenever I make a change to an activity (change the description), I get a duplicate. Seems like a pretty easy thing for Strava to duplicate.
