Duplicate entries of Strava data in Health

When using the Strava and Apple Health integration, some Strava activity data is syncing twice in Apple Health. Troubleshooting this problem is difficult and hard to reproduce. In the meantime, below are steps that may temporarily resolve the duplicates:

  1. In Health, turn off all sources for each of the data types (Active Calories, Cycling Distance, Walking + Running Distance, Workouts). Close the Health app and the Strava app.
  2. Start the Health app again and turn all Strava sources back on, including the Workouts option.
  3. Open the Strava app, go to the "You" feed and pull down to refresh. Then scroll down through that feed to view past activities. This allows your data to be pulled from Strava and passed to the Health app.
  4. If that doesn't work, delete and reinstall the Strava app (when prompted to remove Health-related data, say yes). Go to settings after reinstalling Strava and enable Health sharing.

  • Just checked my list of workouts in Apple Activity and duplicates are now popping up for workouts completed back in December. Pretty sure I previously deleted these duplicate entries, but now they’re back. Wtf?!

  • Well this is annoying isn't it! Came here looking for a fix, found years of Strava customers being ignored.

  • I only started getting this issue this week, Worked fine before. I used to be able to start a workout on my Apple Watch in the Strava App and it would also start the Strava app on my iphone so I could use it bit like a Sat nav as well. As long as I stopped the work out on my watch everything, including heart rate would be copied over to one work out log.
This week for no apparent reason, the app on the watch doesn't seem to talk to the phone anymore and I have to start the app on the phone separately. Unfortunately one has the record of the heart rate data the other doesn't.
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the update for the Apple watch series 2? I have the original Apple watch so no GPS and depend on the phone for that.
I realise I can just choose not save the data from the phone at the end of the work out so I only have the one record but slightly annoying it used to work perfectly now it doesn't.

  • I've only recently become aware of this issue, as I've started using Apple Health and Activities apps. Most of my activities are runs, and they've all been recorded with my iPhone (thus far... Just got an Apple Watch but haven't run with it yet). Some of my runs are duplicated almost a dozen times. I do very little socializing on Strava, and no tinkering with my activities (renaming, sharing, whatever).

This is a Strava issue, not an Apple issue. It appears someone at Strava doesn't understand the IOS Health Kit SDK. Strava is my goto running app, but unless they fix this I may have to switch. And the new Apple Watch app - even though I've only opened it to see what it does - is buggy and crashes.

  • Yep, why would I ever pay for an app who ignores an issue for a large number of its user base for years? The dup entry could be fixed if they just dedicated someone to looking into it. As has been mentioned before, other apps can do this without issue.

  • I didn’t notice this at first, but *all* my rides are duplicated, most three or four times. Reinstating didn’t help. And now it seems that activities are not synced with health again until I open the individual rides... some 100 rides to open and close in the app :'(
This is horrible, and the fact that it’s been an issue for three years is concerning.

  • here's an exchange i had with them in June... Still nothing:

It's been over a year now that the activities duplicate, triplicate, even sometimes quadruplicate in the health app. It's maddening, and I am about to cancel my subscription

    Hi David,

Thank you for your message. We're currently experiencing an issue that is causing Strava activities to appear twice in Apple Health. Unfortunately, troubleshooting these types of problems with the Health app is very difficult and in most cases we're unable to reproduce the issue. We are working towards a fix, but below are steps you can try to resolve the problem.
In Health, turn off all sources for each of the data types (Active Calories, Cycling Distance, Walking + Running Distance, Workouts).

Close the Health app and the Strava app.

Start Health app again and turn all Strava sources back on, including the Workouts option.

Start up Strava, go to the Me feed and pull down to refresh. Then scroll down through that feed to view past activities which allows that data to be pulled from the Strava servers and passed into the Health app.

If that doesn't work, you may have to delete and reinstall the Strava app. You won't lose any data if you do this because it's all stored on the Strava servers (and when prompted to remove Health related data, say yes). To get entries back in to Health app, go to settings after reinstalling Strava and enable Health sharing.

    Some other observations:
    1. Editing the activity after saving it will sometimes trigger the duplicate activity. This includes changing your gear and cropping the activity.
    2. Uploading a manual activity to Strava and viewing the feed can clear out some of the duplications in Health.

You can also "Follow" this Known Issue to receive email updates as they become available. (https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/206393444-Duplicate-entries-of-Strava-data-in-Health)

I hope this helps! Thanks very much for your patience.

    Cheers,

    Hello Camilla,

I have done all these steps multiple times and follow (the choir of complaints) at the Known Issue article.

It’s disingenuous and frankly insulting to say “We’re currently experiencing an issue that is causing” duplicate entries. This feature has been broken for 8 months, for the entire time since the integration was set-up with the new ios. It has never worked as far as I know, and is a flaw, not a bug.

A real explanation for what is the problem and an honest time line for a “Non-Beta” version would be appreciated by all and would save Strava a lot of grief and damage to the app and service’s reputation. There’s a lot of complaining in a lot of places about this issue, and it’s not good for the long term for you guys.

    Thanks,

    dwb

    Hi David,

Thank you for getting back to me and I do apologize for the frustration. We are aware that this has been an issue for some time and plans to address it are on our radar for the coming months. We do have a lot to prioritize so unfortunately, I am unable to provide any further timeline for a fix.

We appreciate your continued patience and understanding.

    Best,

  • @Michael, my situation is as you describe, but the total is tripled. Three entries from strava, 3x the cycling mileage, and I get to decide which two to kill and hope I don’t forget and mess up my numbers :-(

  • Yep, I"m out as well. The hassle of all those duplicate entries, and the havoc they can cause in other applications that use that data, outweighs the benefits of Strava. I'm just going to reload the HealthFit app to keep a separate record of my workouts in a Google Drive spreadsheet.

  • Still no progress.....sigh... Today I got a marketing blast from Strava that talks about daily activity reports etc etc etc. On that email they provided a feedback URL . :)

So..... I am sure you can guess what I did with that. :)

    The URL is this: http://news.strava.com/pub/cc?_ri_=X0Gzc2X%3DYQpglLjHJlYQGrOnrIzdEzgyMEphfd6zarze6JSYIt1SWtCAh7rzd1lzgvryJ3PCzda1ghVXtpKX%3DSRRTTDCB&_ei_=EolaGGF4SNMvxFF7KucKuWNjCRwaXc1Af_nOChIiTU_exGDgFRDKRv0J4kRFQfGxxDMuhXSwSygmQNhK.

Feel free to use it as you please. :)

  • 3 rides on 1 day somehow ended up 16 entries in the Health app!

  • It's been one and a half years, and it's still happening. Something is going seriously wrong in this company - I'm just glad I don't pay money for it.

  • I raised it again with Strava support only the other day, they admitted they knew that the issue still exists. Simply edit your Strava title, add a photo, etc in the mobile app and a duplicate will get written to Healthkit every time.

I can't believe that it's THAT difficult to fix this if they could be bothered. I use other apps such as Concept2's ERGdata for logging my rowing data and you can edit titles in that without the app going crazy and writing to Apple Health again.

Strava raised $18.5 million of funding back in 2014 and has a healthy base of Premium subs. You really do have to wonder what the hell is going on over there sometimes. Amateur hour!

  • Strava is now posting 4,5,6 duplicate rides for each activity, irrelevant of the source - Zwift, Garmin or iPhone. My mileage on Health is now nonsense.

  • i agree with all the comments, this problem does not seem hard to duplicate and has certainly gone on for way to long. I too and using Garmin connect to up load to Strava and i also use the apple activity tracker for each run or ride. once i open Stava, I get a strata entry in the workout section along with the apple activity data. even though the setting have the apple activity taking priority.. Strava is the only activity app that this is doing it with.. surely it cant be that hard to reproduce.

  • I’ve started using “map my ride” app instead and it works fine, doesn’t create duplicated entries in the Apple health and it does everything what strava do.

  • So I just confirmed (from the 2015 comments) that if you update your activity to private after syncing it duplicates your workout. Now, sometimes it shows duplicate workout and sometimes it doesn't for me. Regardless if it's private or public. So weird. I go on walks on my break at work and change them to private. Not until yesterday did it start affecting my rings though. For example, my active calories ring is at 284 right now. I change to private and it jumps to 887. Usually even though it duplicates my activity it won't have any effect on my rings. I was thrown off when I got two out my three rings closed before noon on a workday. Haha. Annoying but I just switched from private to public and switched back. My rings went back down to what they were on the original sync.

  • I have cancelled my premium support and will not turn it on again. Strava didn’t manage to take this issue seriously for more than one year.

If anyone knows a good alternative to Strava, pls let me know.
Maybe Apple‘s training app is good enough for me, since it meanwhile supports recording and tracking watch’ position data...

  • Has anyone tried HealthFit syncing?
I'm sure many of you have an Apple Watch as I do. I don't use it because I wasn't aware I could export the data that it records. I just came across HealthFit app that says it syncs an Apple workout and all it's related data to all the popular fitness tracking apps/sites. I'm going to give it a shot and see how it compares to how I've been doing it which was using a Lezyne Super GPS to track everything. I'll still run the Lezyne but turn Strava upload off.

  • Good for you. I think I will too.

Unfortunately, going by Strava’s virtual silence one the issue, they don’t seem to care.

  • @Louis—😂 I think you win!
@Michael—I only started using Strava because it is compatible with RunBet. I think I might try RunKeeper. I think that is also compatible with RunBet.

  • Strava just wrote my 15 mile ride this morning 5 freaking times and made HealthKit think I biked 75 miles.

I can't believe this is broken still.

  • Guys, this post started FIVE MONTHS AGO! This should be a reasonably easy fix to determine root cause, put in a queue for resolution and get fixed. Why is this still an open item?

    Please correct. Sooner is better.

  • This seems insane to me that Strava has not fixed this.

FYI if you upload your rides from a third party source it seems to avoid the duplicates. I have been using a wahoo elemnt Bolt. When it auto uploads to strava the duplicates don't occur. Unfortunately the auto upload doesn't always work. When it fails then I have to upload manually and of course the duplicates are created.

  • i've been struggling with the same issue, and have tried all the tweaks suggested here. Works again for a while (showing only one ride), but then duplicates rides again after a few. Odd thing: i share activities with family through the Activities app on the phone/watch, and they see the duplicates too. And once i deleted all the data/apps/connections, reinstalled and reconnected, and then my family saw triplicate rides when i showed just one again... need this to be fixed...

  • They responded very quickly to my ticket but on the first reply got the standard troubleshooting step. I then replied to try to get it escalated but was told they are aware of it but it is not a high priority. Funny enough they pointed me to this page to be notified of updates.
