Garmin and Strava sync troubleshooting

Occasionally, we hear of issues or delays in syncing your Garmin Connect data to Strava. Setting up the sync is explained in the article on Uploading from a Garmin device.

I get an authorization error, or blank page, when trying to connect my Garmin and Strava accounts on the website. How do I troubleshoot?

Clear your browser cache and try to connect again.

If you have a mobile phone, please try connecting through the Strava mobile app (from Settings page and "Link Other Services"). Or, try connecting using the browser on your phone.

Recently, Garmin made a change to their servers for customers in China and it’s causing errors with account creation, activity syncing and the Strava Live Segments feature. There is no solution at this time, and we recommend uploading files directly to Strava as explained below.

I just connected my Garmin and Strava accounts. What now?

After linking Garmin and Strava for the first time, you'll need a new upload to trigger the sync. So, go out and record a new activity even if it's just a short test. After the first new upload syncs to Strava, your Garmin Connect activity history for the past 90 days will also sync within 24 hours.

I uploaded to Garmin Connect a while ago, but I still don't see the activity on Strava. What gives?

We see occasional delays in receiving data from Garmin Connect, especially during peak upload times. While the sync functionality will usually take just a few minutes, sometimes there are delays of up to 12 hours.

You can check whether Garmin Sync is working by checking out their status page and referring to the "Strava" status (6th from the bottom). The Strava status page also displays uploads from Garmin Connect.

If you find yourself in this situation and don't want to wait, you can use any of the below workarounds:

  1. Upload directly to Strava by connecting your device to your computer with a USB cable. Use the file upload option.
  2. Export the TCX or GPX file from Garmin Connect, and save the file to your computer. Use the same file upload option as described above.
  3. Delete the Garmin Connect activity, and re-sync your Garmin to upload the file to Garmin Connect again. This will trigger a new sync attempt to Strava.
  4. Contact us by submitting a ticket. There may be an error when trying to upload your Garmin file to Strava and our Support team can advise.

No activities are syncing to Strava, even after uploading a new activity to Garmin Connect. How can I start over?

One way to ensure a refreshed connection between Garmin Connect and Strava is to disconnect Garmin Sync from your Strava settings, then reconnect. To disconnect, visit Settings in the mobile app or website, and select "disconnect". To reconnect, follow the authorization flow after selecting connect.

Remember, Garmin sync is not triggered until the first new activity is uploaded to Garmin after your accounts are reconnected. At that point, Garmin will sync the new activity to Strava, and check your 90-day activity history and sync any missing files to Strava as well. This can be performed with a short test activity that is later deleted.

I mark my activities as private on Garmin Connect, but they're public on Strava. How come?

Privacy settings on your Garmin Connect account are not synced with Strava. However, Strava has a privacy feature to mark all new uploads as private by default

  • I synced my Garmin 520 with garmin connect earlier this evening and some 5 hours later there isn't anything in my strava account, I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the device with my strava profile but still nothing.

  • Hi - both my garmin connect and strava apps tell me I am connected . But, my activity is not syncing to my Strava account...

  • Hi

I have a Garmin 500. I connected the USB lead to my computer. My ride uploaded to Garmin connect activities page okay. I then checked to see whether the ride had automatically uploaded to Strava but nothing is showing. Could you please advise?

  • I'm having the same issue with Garmin Edge 1000. GC and Strava are connected, at least they both say they are. My ride shows on GC but is not uploaded onto Strava. My Wahoo uploads with Strava fine.

  • Garmin connect is not syncing with strava since updating despite re-linking the apps. 2/11/2016. Got to say that experiencing lots of issues on garmins end with the 520 edge recently, please pass on that if ain't broke don't fix it.

  • Hello
I seem to be having the same problem. My Garmin 1000 has been syncing beautifully (except a few occasions when it took a few hours). My last few rides uploaded to Garmin Connect just fine, but nothing shows up on my Strava. This is so so frustrating. I have logged out, ran updates on my computer, phone and Garmin 1000 and still nothing. any advice?

  • I have a quick fix that has worked for me since leaving my past comment. In the garmin 520 edge (or whatever you have) check out Menu, History, Rides. Look to see if your missing ride is in there. If yes then go to the Garmin connect App and delete the ride BUT ONLY in the garmin connect app, not the garmin device (I.e 520) itself . Now go back to Rides on the garmin 520 edge, select the troublesome ride and you will see a screen saying Summary e.c.t. Now at the bottom of this screen there is an upload ride option. Select upload ride and re-sync. This has since sorted it out the issue and had no problems since.

  • Arrgh. Just tried Rich's fix, but there's no upload option at the bottom of the page that starts out with "Summary." And now, though the ride is still on my Edge 520, it won't even load into Garmin Connect.

  • My 520 has been fine syncing to strava for months. But the last 2 rides upload to connect but not to strava? Any ideas?

  • Same problem. I have a new Fenix 3 saphire. GC is supposedly connected to Strava just fine but nothing has been sent to Strava.

  • Thanks @Rich! I've used this trick successfully as well:

  • What i found is once you've connected to Strava sure enough activity after that point is synced to Strava - i went for a short walk down the street and it was in Strava a few mins later. Perhaps it would have eventually sucked the past 30 days of activity but to save mucking around I imported the historical FIT files manually directly from the device - which is easy and works.

  • ARGH... I have a new Fenix 3 saphire. No matter what method I used to sync with Strava - all fails at the page of link authorization.

"We're sorry. The page you're looking for no longer exists." kind of sad...

  • Zen - Sorry for the troubles linking your Strava and Garmin Connect accounts. There was an issue yesterday that broke the authentication between the two services. It has since been fixed.
