How to fix GPS recording issues on Huawei phones

Usually, battery saving settings on Huawei phones are the cause of most GPS troubles. These settings can force quit the GPS at any time, which means that the Strava app cannot continue to record your activity. Try these tips when recording with a Huawei phone:

  • Check that you're running the latest updates of both the Strava app and your Android device.
  • Next, be sure to add Strava as a 'protected app' in your phone's settings and disable or ignore any energy optimizations or battery saving modes.
  • An option shared by our community is to prevent auto-lock of the Strava record screen. Leaving the screen on for the duration of the recording may prevent the phone from shutting the GPS off.

A list of some Huawei devices with recording issues:

  • Android 6 devices
    • Huawei Nova, Nova +
    • Huawei P8, P8 Lite
    • Huawei G7, G7 Plus

  • I am as well facing the issue of irregular recording after upgrade to EMUI 10.0.0. Kindly advise some solutions. I tried multiple setting options. But nothing seem to work.

  • To write it again: there is no remedy for this problem for the listed phones even if ALL settings are perfectly correct. In my experience (three years) the only thing working is switching on the display every now and then.

  • I have had the same issue with GPS tracking since (finally) get upgraded to EMUI 10, the good news is that I have a workaround... It is not ideal but means that I can continue to use my phone and Strava to track my many walks! All you have to do is to start a Strava activity as normal, but then also load Google Maps and navigate to somewhere / anywhere. It doesn't matter where but this will stop the GPS from sleeping on you. You can turn the screen off for the duration of the activity and it will continue to track you as before without the GPS switching off. Hopefully we will get a proper fix soon but thought this might help a few people in the meantime :-)

  • When my Huawei Mate 20 Pro automatically upgraded to EMUI 10 my Strava stopped tracking GPS properly midway through exercise. I tried many of the suggestions on this post and none of them worked.

Then I went to my phone settings -> Battery settings -> Optimise Battery Usage section. Then make sure you set the three power saving options to off. ie. Turn off 'Power Saving Mode' and 'Ultra Power Saving Mode'. That fixed the GPS for me. Strava tracks perfectly again and GPS no longer randomly stops mid activity. Good luck!

  • I have been struggling with this problem for 4 years, I have already reported about 200 interrupted workouts, the last ticket has been open for over 8 months, and despite being a premium user, they no longer respond to my requests, truly a company with incapable technicians, I use the Endomondo app at the same time and it works great

  • I tried all the suggestions involving permissions. The only thing that works on my Huawei P30 Lite is running in airplane mode. But then there is no map in Strava. However, in Trailforks the basic map is available in airplane mode, and Trailforks tracks can be uploaded to Strava.

  • Will give that a try - to switch to no power saving mode. Disappointing when I run 5 K and then find it has tracked about the first 1pm and then stopped. To ask if data roaming is necessary ?

  • Huawei P30 Pro worked fine with Strava until last 2 rides where only extreme points were recorded and trip shown "as the crow flies". Resolved by altering phone to stop going into low power mode with Strava and changing Strava settings to manual not automatic.

  • I also have issues with my Huawei Mate 20 Pro for a few months - only straight lines from point to point - it seems it starts OK for a 20-30m and then losts the continuous tracking.

So it seems setting the battery usage might solve the issue - I'll test today and send an update.

However, this was not an issue before so I guess it might be related to the EMUI update as mentioned on previous comments.

  • Hey @meg, this article could do with some updating for Android 10 now as 'protected apps' no longer a setting.
Link above from @Mario is on the right track it seems

    1. Settings > Battery
Turn off all Power Saving mdoes (Performance mode, Power saving mode, ultra power saving mode)

    2. Settings > Battery > App Launch
Find the Strava App, set it to 'Manage Manually'
Then in the 3 options that pop up, leave ALL ON
    - Auto-Launch
    - Secondary Launch
    - Run in Background

A simple test just perfromed showed this seemed to work for me now. Will monitor it for a few activities begore being fully confident.

The issue will be remembering to check your battery saving modes when using Strava each time should you have changed them for other needs in between.

  • I have found that Honor 8a and Huawei p20 has issues with strava.

I use this app for Bicyle !

ALL hilly segments has a different elapsed time and moving time . I think moving time is the correct . The thing is i dont stop on the segments so elapsed time is wrong. it usually have half/ full minute more than moving time. My PR's are are not the correct one.

    Anyone has similar problems?

You should check too ! !
