Strava Android app crashes

We've been tracking app crashes on Android linked to the MediaTek MT6752 processor. The crashes can happen on startup or when navigating elsewhere in the app. We are still investigating a fix, and will be sure to keep you updated (please Follow this post for updates).

Take a moment to check if your Android device has this problematic processor:

http://www.kimovil.com/en/list-smartphones-by-processor/mediatek-mt6752

We've temporarily blacklisted some devices until the fix can be released:

  • Lenovo A7000
  • All Elephone devices

If you would like to download the previous version of the app (which should not crash) you can do so here.

Thanks, and keep us posted with your comments below!

August 30, 2016 update:

We've had success in solving most of the Android crash reports stemming from the MediaTek processor phones.

However, there is one open Google Play Services issue that is still causing some phones to crash when viewing Strava Activities such as the BQ Aquaris, Lenovo, UMI, and some other phones. Unfortunately, the fix will need to be addressed within Play Services, not Strava, and it will not be ready for release for a few weeks.

We will keep this thread informed as much as possible.

October 6th, 2016: Google Play Services issue has been resolved.

  • Just so you know, the app version hosted in the dropbox link produces the same error as current version on the phone I mentioned, bq Aquaris 4.5 with processor mediatek mt6735m

  • Hello everyone -
We have a fix for this issue coming in the August app release. In the meantime, we've blacklisted some devices until the fix is released.

    Thanks for your patience.

  • Same issue with Lenovo Vibe S1

  • Thank you for your work Elle,
We "need" it, you know, as breathing #LOL

  • I get the Beta (4.22.0) in the Playstore, this one works :-)
    (Ulefone U007 Mediatek 6580A Andro 6.0)

  • On lenovo k3 the old version works, as long as I don't navigate to older activities. Also, speed statistics might be a bit of

  • My Sony Xperia M5 also stopped strava after upgrading to Android 6. after installing the old strava version I am up and running again. Thanks Elle.

  • MY STRAVA DON'T SHOW MY RIDE FOR TODAY WHAT I HAVE TO DO SHOW IN MY GARMIN SHOW THE ONE I DO YESTERDAY BUT DON'T SHOW THE ONE I DO TODAY AND BEFORT AUTOMATIC SHOW BUT TODAY NOT

  • Hello,
I have a smartphone BQ Aquaris A4.5. The app crashes when I open a recent activity, just after upgrading to Android 6.
I tried the recommended previous version (4.8.0), and still crashing.
I upgraded to August version, 4.22.0, and continues crashing.
I tested the beta version 5.0.0, and still crashing.
The only version that works for me is the 4.3.1

  • Old version posted above and latest are both crashing on umi super very very frustrating

  • Old version posted above and latest version keep crashing on umi super very frustrating

  • My app crashes even with old 4.8 version...doogee with MT6735P processor with android 6.0

  • The 4.3.1 version is the only one that does not crash for me (did not use to record activities cause I use Garmin,so I dont know about crashing in this ),but the app version is too old and misses new features...But I will stay with it for a while.

  • I use Android 6 (Honor 7 is the phone). The app doesn't crash when I start it or navigate, however it does crash after some time. It's just in my backpocket and recording. I have to re-start strava and get back on the current ride. The (translated) strava message says something like "Strava has recovered from a problem and works again". This is particularly troublesome when I am riding a bike because you have to check the phone like every ten minutes bc it can practically always crash and you lose data. it's annoying. (For running it doesn't matter because it only happens when the app runs longer than an hour).

  • Thank @Jeferson, that works for my addiction ;-) Hope things will be solved soon :(
I only use strava to watch details, using my tomtom watch for the activities..
I use runkeeper (God knows why....) and same issues occure here when watching activity details.

  • Using a Samsung S3 with Android 4.4.2, this problem "unfortunately, Strava had stopped" began yesterday. Have tried various solutions (restart, remove and reload app, power off and remove/replace sim card and restart) without resolution.

  • Umi Super i android 6 :-(

  • Strava 4.22.0 is not working on my Huawei p9 lite (vnsl31 emui 4.1 based on android 6.0). When I start a ride it goes perfectly. When I stop on my bike for a while (10-15 minutes) and restart, the app seems not to record the second part of the tour. When I came home last 3 times I found that Strava had recorded less than half of the route, this is very frustrating because Strava is the best app. I set all the notification, Strava set as a protected app, but nothing changed

  • I also use Strava a lot and now installed Strava 5.0.0 on my new phone Leeco Le2 Pro with Mediatek X20 and Android 6 on it and I also have the problem that it regularly force closed. I get the message: "Sorry, Strava has stopped."

So it looks like more phones with other processors have the same problem.
Can someone tell me what to do to solve this big problem for me. Do I need to give a specific file so you can analyse the problems?

  • This must be a hard problem because we are near end of august and no solution for this problem yet...

  • I think so, I hope Strava will answer today.

  • same issue on BLU R1 HD phone from Amazon. Has MediaTek 6735
