iPhone app recording issues

We've seen a recent increase in the number of iOS users reporting GPS issues when recording but we aren't quite sure of the cause. This means the app freezes or stops mid-recording which results in incomplete data and missing portions of your activity. To help us investigate the issue, please try the troubleshooting steps below and let us know if it improves your future recordings:

  • Try turning your phone completely off then on.
  • Try turning location services off then on. Location services are located in settings > privacy > location services (turn off/on).
  • Try turning off wifi before and during recording.
  • Close all other open applications before recording and if you open another app during your activity, navigate back to Strava afterward.
  • Lastly, sometimes recording data quality can be improved by giving your phone more time to acquire satellites prior to starting your activity. Try opening Strava when you have a clear and unobstructed view of the sky and wait a few more minutes than normal before starting your activity.

Update: We've received reports that updating to iOS 11.3 has helped to improve GPS recordings on Strava.

  • Used Strava yesterday for the first time since logging the issue. Followed all the steps and my activity seems to have been recorded correctly. Bit of a nuisance having to go through this procedure, hope a resolution can be found. by the way, I was in the midst of the Scottish Highlands, clear view of the sky, but only GPRS signal, phone reported that it couldn't find my location, but I started recording anyway, and it was all there. I haven't tried with my Watch so far. Unfortunately carrying an injury, so won't be able to test as often as I'd like!

  • Same issue on my iPhone 6S. Been happening for at least a few weeks. App says GPS signal acquired and records time and heartrate, but won't record pace/distance. Have tried all the suggestions with no luck.

  • Yep same story for me, started just before Xmas. I do everything the same but half of my rides are now straight lines. Tried all of the suggestions above.

  • Tried Strava while walking the dog. Started Strava, turned off WiFi, then started to record. Stopped and wouldn’t restart until I stopped auto pause. Then it was fine. On my bike, I didn’t have to turn off auto pause.

  • Hi Elle. I turned off WiFi for the ride home after work today and it didn't upload right away so I thought it was lost. But... it showed up a little later and recorded perfectly. The ride in (this AM) had Wifi enabled and did not record correctly and did the "as the crow flies" bit again. Hopefully this helps & I'm updating my phone tonight so I will test again tomorrow.

  • On a walk yesterday I turned on Strava, turned off WiFi, and started to record. App stopped recording until I turned off auto pause, then it was fine. Another successful ride today, using the same procedure, except that I left auto pause on.

  • sigh. morning commute registered oddly for a very short time. afternoon commute registered perfectly. both were with WiFi turned off. back to the drawing board.

  • Iphone 5, did updates on the 7 Feb and next two rides have been cut short, did this a few months back and a following update seemed then fix it.
Starts OK, When I'm finished and go to stop the ride it is already stopped and app is turned off, only recorded the first 10 to 20 minutes of the ride and the shots to the end on the map.

  • So,

    Auto pause off
ask to join other networks on

    Didn't work

  • Tried turning off the wifi etc yesterday.
Ran Strava and Nike RC side by side.
Same run, same loop as usual.
    Strava recorded 1.7 miles
    Nike recorded 4.25.

Both said they had a GPS signal when I started. Both missed the first half mile +.

  • Well this is frustrating but at least I am not alone. I start Strava up as usual, pop it in my pocket start my ride... find that it has not moved from my starting point and has recorded non of the ride. This just started this week for me. Iphone 5s, no recent OS changes, everything else works as it should, google maps tracks just fine... just Strava. Bit frustrating. will delete and reinstall and see if that helps...

  • I’ve tried turning WiFi off even mobile data off and auto pause as well as all suggestions in this thread..nothing has worked. Interestingly or not I tried a run with MapMyRun and that wouldn’t work either seems they have the same issue. Garmin watch is uploading now so I’ll stick with that.

  • After updating my iPhone 6S to iOS 11.2.5, and turning auto pause off, Strava has been working correctly for two days now. Fingers crossed.

  • Similar problems on iPhone 6s for past three weeks: when select record GPS acquires signal and start ride time starts ticking but it does not record distance. When I stopped to check on recent ride the GPS knew where I was but no distance had been recorded. In all cases the app starts working properly at some random point and records the finish of the ride. The map shows an as the crow flies straight line to where it started to record. V frustrating. What’s happening Strava? Thx.

  • I can’t get mine to record any sort of distance, since my iOS update in October 17, I’ve tried all of the above and it also states that it has picked up my GPS location so that’s not an issue. Very frustrated and shall need to look up other map apps if I can’t get this resolved

  • I started having this problem since I updated the strava app on my Apple Watch about two weeks ago. Prior to the update I didn’t seem to have any issue with it recording accurate data. Now every time I run it records incorrectly.

  • When I run stairs the time of my run that shows is only about half of the actual time. However, the entire course I run shows on the map.

  • So, like many on here. I've been using the Strava app on my iPhone happily without issue to records runs. My phone 6s, has worked perfectly with Strava up until Jan 22nd. But my last two runs on Jan 29th and Feb 5th have both not picked up any time or distance. Highly frustrating as I use this as a record of my activity. Just impacted the last couple of weeks.

  • Strava not recording at all on my iPhone 6 since from nearly Jan 2018. Times runs but seems to make no connection to gps to record distance or location. 😭

  • Have tried all of the troubleshooting above and nothing seems to work. Still just recording time but no distance 😡😡

  • I just started having the same issue this week. I have been using Strava (premium member) for over a year now and have had no issues. This week, it recorded my ride as 5.7 miles in 33 seconds!!...then nothing! The only thing that has changed is a new phone case. I had to manually add my ride (I do the same ride 3 x week) and delete the 5.7 mile ride. Not sure what is going on, as nothing has changed. I haven't updated my iOS, or done anything different. I'll try the above suggestions, but can't understand why these issues were never issues before?! Hope Strava can resolve the problem soon! In the meantime, I will experiment and remove the new phone case to see what happens.

  • Had another successful recording last time out. It really takes a lot of prep to shut down apps, restart phone, restart location services and disable WiFi! Then several steps need reversed to get the phone back to normal operations. As I’m recording walks, with breaks, I don’t switch off auto pause. It is now over 3 weeks since first reports appeared, what is progress on a solution?

  • Update from my post a week ago. Since my phone is a 5S, they are no longer updating the IOS apparently. I tried all the turning other apps and autopause off... though why this would suddenly be the problem when it has never been before is totally illogical (what suddenly changed to make this a problem now?). It made no difference and the app still did not track.

Instead, I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Voila problem solved, back to showing my daily plodding... however it does seem that the reinstall gave me a new version of Strava, since the dashboard now gives me an 'Explore' button bottom left. Is it possible that many of us experiencing this issue are simply not being prompted to upgrade the app version? Whatever, it works great again now... yay!!

  • Have tried all the suggestions above - & reinstalled the app etc, but tonight I recorded 35 minutes and zero distance. Same result for the last 2 weeks.

It would be great if someone from Strava could give us some sort of explanation or update on a fix. Thanks.

  • I am getting sick of this, I cycle to London and back home daily and the issue started suddenly with my Iphone 6; wrong recordings, missing a few miles and sections to not recording sections and picking only the start and finish. In the last few days it now shows just a straight line with no sections and less mileage... I started switching off the wifi (pure guess) and that worked for a few days. Yesterday the GPS finally "lost it"... in the morning it showed an average speed of 122mph (yeah right) but a maximum speed of 22mph... and no distance recorded! Last night strava lost the plot completely, it shows a picture of the start but 0 everything! Useless.

This morning I used my old Samsung S2 (yes you read correctly) and it recorded the entire thing properly.

I just read the "suggestions from Strava and turned the location off, and switched the phone off too. Lets see if that works!

  • Me too. iPhone 6s fails to record anything, just shows time, no distance, no splits, nada. I switched to Runtastic and it worked fine.

  • I too have had problems recording my cycle training (in Dubai using an iPhone 5S). Now I have ordered a Garmin Forerunner 235, cant keep losing my distances. Strange but seems a recent problem when reading all these comments.

  • Another sufferer here. Just since the last Strava update. Tried all of the advised fixes and no joy. Uninstalled and reinstalled Strava so I await the next session with interest..............

Strava, please note that my issue started only after updating the Strava app.

Looking forward to a resolution to this issue

  • Interesting note. There is a Strava segment that ends near a busy intersection. After that intersection, I wind my way through the shopping center to a store. The last two rides to this store, Strava has stopped recording the distance and given a straight line from before the end of that segment to the store. I know because I checked it both times before entering the store. There is also another area that seems to cause Strava to shut off. Just wondering whether there is some sort of interference causing the problems.
