iPhone app recording issues

We've seen a recent increase in the number of iOS users reporting GPS issues when recording but we aren't quite sure of the cause. This means the app freezes or stops mid-recording which results in incomplete data and missing portions of your activity. To help us investigate the issue, please try the troubleshooting steps below and let us know if it improves your future recordings:

  • Try turning your phone completely off then on.
  • Try turning location services off then on. Location services are located in settings > privacy > location services (turn off/on).
  • Try turning off wifi before and during recording.
  • Close all other open applications before recording and if you open another app during your activity, navigate back to Strava afterward.
  • Lastly, sometimes recording data quality can be improved by giving your phone more time to acquire satellites prior to starting your activity. Try opening Strava when you have a clear and unobstructed view of the sky and wait a few more minutes than normal before starting your activity.

Update: We've received reports that updating to iOS 11.3 has helped to improve GPS recordings on Strava.

  • Suffered for weeks now, tried everything poss. Are premium accounts suffering too??

  • I'm wondering if it's having Google Maps timeline feature turned on; I turned it on a while back and forgot about it, I've just disabled it and I'll see how I go tonight.

This problem seems to have occurred without me changing anything about my phone, although maybe I updated the Google Map app.

I used ridewithgps as a test, and have similar drop outs.

  • I have given up using the app and now only manually input which really ruins the experience for me. I tend to run a 5k 5x per week and if I trusted the app, it picks up between 2.5 - 3.5k of my run and therefore gives erroneous timings.

If it isn't resolved soon, I fear having to look for a new app.

  • Just wanted to report, I have been having the same issues (iPhone 6S) as many have reported here, but with this latest Strava update everything is back to normal, working great.

  • Did update V34.0.0 and had about 6 good rides, no faulty ones, Took Elle's advice and did lastest update to V35.0.0 and now back to Square one, three out of three have failed. Can I down-date ?
    On Iphone 5s

  • Note that I have had issues just recently as well on my iPhone 6s. It is a Strava specific issue as I run Cyclemeter on my phone at the same time, and it records everything just fine. Very weird.

  • I turned the auto-pauses off but the app still doesnt work, recording time but not distances, Iphone 5s

  • PS until the problem has been sorted, of course.

  • iPhone 7 running the latest iOS update and have had the same issue starting in January. Only about 1 in 5 runs records flawlessly. Typically, it will fail to log distance the first mile or so (even though it states the GPS signal is acquiredu), then pick up the signal and track me and then sporadically lose signal throughout the duration of the run. I have seen improvement when not running other apps, but this is less than ideal as I like to stream music. I am

  • As said before I've had this problem (on 2 runs now) but it also happened when using google maps for navigation, it must be an apple issue

  • Used Strava yesterday for the first time since logging the issue. Followed all the steps and my activity seems to have been recorded correctly. Bit of a nuisance having to go through this procedure, hope a resolution can be found. by the way, I was in the midst of the Scottish Highlands, clear view of the sky, but only GPRS signal, phone reported that it couldn't find my location, but I started recording anyway, and it was all there. I haven't tried with my Watch so far. Unfortunately carrying an injury, so won't be able to test as often as I'd like!

  • It seems that everything is a little slower with recent upgrades desoite follwing recommendations from STRAVA and Apple.

  • I have had issues with Strava failing to record accurately. But importantly, I also had another exercise recording app fail to record correctly as well as inaccuracy. So this suggested it wasn't just Strava, although being random, Strava was more likely to have issues.

I have recently updated to the latest iOS 11.2.6 version (on my iPhone 6s) and have not had any issues since. Still monitoring.

  • Strava not recording at all on my iPhone 6 since from nearly Jan 2018. Times runs but seems to make no connection to gps to record distance or location. 😭

  • I've tried all suggestions and Strava will only have the time running and won't track run even though it has GPS signal. I will try disabling wifi while running (I am pretty sure i might have already done this as i don't tend to have wifi on the phone). Its getting frustrating so I am looking for another app as I also have a Garmin watch and that is failing to upload to Strava no matter what I do!

  • New update
    Same problems, not recording GPS
Diappointed Strava seem unable to respond
    Time for a new app

  • I am getting sick of this, I cycle to London and back home daily and the issue started suddenly with my Iphone 6; wrong recordings, missing a few miles and sections to not recording sections and picking only the start and finish. In the last few days it now shows just a straight line with no sections and less mileage... I started switching off the wifi (pure guess) and that worked for a few days. Yesterday the GPS finally "lost it"... in the morning it showed an average speed of 122mph (yeah right) but a maximum speed of 22mph... and no distance recorded! Last night strava lost the plot completely, it shows a picture of the start but 0 everything! Useless.

This morning I used my old Samsung S2 (yes you read correctly) and it recorded the entire thing properly.

I just read the "suggestions from Strava and turned the location off, and switched the phone off too. Lets see if that works!

  • Can’t even open the Strava app. Just get the cogwheel running then it blanks out!!
I’ve tried turning phone off, WiFi,locations and all other apps -with no luck. Don’t really want to have to reinstall and loose all my data. Any suggestions please ?

  • After turning the location services on and off it got better - recorded almost entire trip for me. However it still doesn't show what it saves, when I ride it shows the speed as 0 km and distance as 0 km and then the almost full distance appears when I save the activity. I say almost full because today it again lost the signal for the last ~300m.

  • Same issue on my iPhone 6S. Been happening for at least a few weeks. App says GPS signal acquired and records time and heartrate, but won't record pace/distance. Have tried all the suggestions with no luck.

  • FOUND A SOLUTION: updating the iOS to 11.2.6 completely fixed the issue for me. the software update was not automatic as with most iOS updates. I found that there was a pending update by going to Settings>General>Software update. Today I recorded a 6h ride with no missing segments and no gps drops.

  • Got the same problems since roughly the beginning of the year on an iphone 6S- Do any alternative apps work and cover the same scope as Strava I wonder?

  • Have iPhone 6s and have only been using Strava for about a month.Operating ok until Wednesday 21st.Last 2 runs-recorded distance but did not record speed/km or total time. Also scribing of route all over the place like a MrScribble movie.Able to find elevations and some stats on the swipes.Have Tried most of the Fox tips without success.Any further bug fixes proposed by Strava?????

  • I can’t get the application to open at all. Up until now it had been working fine for me. I have done most of the things on the list. Perhaps my Iphone 6s is simply too old.

  • I regularly do a 4 mile ride to the store. When i get there and pull my phone out, Strava doesn't show any info. i have to wait several minutes for my trail to catch up with me, for the mileage to increase bit by bit, and for the timer to start again. Then I have to do the same thing again when I get home before I save. At least, since the last update, I haven't gotten the 'as the crow flies line'. So maybe my iphone 6 is just slow because of the Apple screw up, and Strava is just having a hard time adjusting. (I still think the problems somehow have to do with Apple slowing down the phone) The phone is also slow and locks up occasionally when I'm just navigating through Strava while at home. I have auto pause off, and 'ask to join networks' on.  Its killing my ams.

  • I’ve been having a lot of gps issues also. I suspect it has to do with Apple intentionally slowing down phones. I have iPhone 6. It just started acting up in the last few months on both Strava and rwgps. Taking it off auto pause seems to help a little but it’s not a complete fix.

  • Tried turning off the wifi etc yesterday.
Ran Strava and Nike RC side by side.
Same run, same loop as usual.
    Strava recorded 1.7 miles
    Nike recorded 4.25.

Both said they had a GPS signal when I started. Both missed the first half mile +.

  • Been having this issue for a few days now. Stava not recording anything. Purely acting as a stopwatch. tried all the suggested fixes. Any help appreciated, thanks

  • As I'm still not running, I just use Strava to record walks. On Saturday I did all the usual prep, and I got a good reading. On Sunday I did it again, and used my Watch to record, for the first time since this started. It worked fine. The prep is time consuming, but seems to work. the steps I do are:

1 Go to settings and turn off wifi and location services.
    2 Close all open apps.
    3 Switch off my phone.
    4Restart the phone.
    5 Restart location services.
6 Open Strava and start recording.

I go back to my home page and lock the phone before starting my walk. I don't stop autopause, as that is an important element when walking and wasn't highlighted by Strava as a potential problem.

As with you all, I would love a proper fix. I don't dare try using the devices without the above procedure, until we are told the bug is fixed, as I may then miss a recording. So, any news?

  • I've been having issues as well. Same iPhone, same routes, no significant changes in the way I use Strava or any other app, but now my rides are not accurate. Today my commute was 0 km; nothing was recorded even though I made sure Strava was started with a GPS lock when I left work. Other times, it starts recording correctly then somehow it shows as if I decided to take off and fly over the city straight towards my destination.

Sorry to say, but the troubleshooting steps listed above aren't useful at all.

I do have auto-pause enabled and it's always been working fine for me for years. I'll try turning it off as see how it goes.

UPDATE: Since a recent app update (end of February 2018), that issue is now resolved for me.

2nd UPDATE: It issue is reoccurring since the last app update of March 9, 2018... What's going on, Strava?
