Garmin Disconnected After August 2022 - Here’s How to Reconnect

We’re making some updates to improve how your Garmin and Strava accounts sync and how your activities are stored. For a handful of athletes, their activities recorded on a Garmin device will stop automatically syncing to Strava. Fortunately, it’s an easy fix. You have to disconnect – then reconnect – your Garmin and Strava account, and you’ll be good to go.

Before August 2022, we recommend proactively disconnecting and reconnecting your accounts to avoid missing activities on Strava.

Step 1: Disconnecting your Strava and Garmin accounts

You can disconnect your accounts from either the Strava website or Garmin Connect:

  1. From the Strava website,
    1. Hover over your profile photo in the upper right-hand corner and select Settings from the drop-down menu.
    2. Look for the Garmin logo under the “Social Connections” section on the right and click Disconnect.
    3. A popup will ask you to confirm if you would like to disconnect; answer yes. If successful, a green banner will appear "Successfully disconnected from Garmin. Syncing will stop."On".
  2. On the Garmin Connect Website:
    1. Hover over your profile photo (or the runner icon) in the upper right-hand corner and select Account from the drop-down menu.
    2. Scroll to the “Applications” section.
    3. Click Disconnect from Strava. If successful, Strava will be removed from the applications list.
  3. From the Garmin Connect app:
      1. Select more from the bottom right to access additional settings.
      2. Scroll down to the bottom and select Settings > Connected Apps.
      3. Find Strava and open it. If you do not see Strava listed, it has already been disconnected.
      4. Click Disconnect from Strava. If successful, Strava will be removed from the Connected Apps list.

Step 2: Reconnecting your Strava and Garmin accounts:

Once the accounts are disconnected, they can be reconnected from the Strava website:

  1. Hover over your profile photo in the upper right-hand corner and select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  2. Look for the Garmin logo under the “Social Connections” section on the right and click Connect with Garmin.
  3. Follow the prompts in the pop-up to enter your Garmin Connect credentials and authorize the app.

Please keep in mind that Garmin sync is not triggered until the first new activity is uploaded to Garmin after your accounts are reconnected. All previous activities recorded with a Garmin device will be uploaded on that first new activity upload.

After August 2022, your Strava and Garmin will already be disconnected. You can reconnect your accounts by following the steps above. If any activities did not sync to Strava while your accounts were disconnected, you can upload them manually by following these steps:

  1. On a computer, log into your Garmin Connect account.
  2. Use the left-hand toolbar to navigate to your "Activities" page.
  3. Click on the activity (not the check box) that you need to export to be brought to the activity's detail page.
    1. Please note that if you only see the option to export the CSV file, you may still be on the activities list page. You will need to click on the specific activity. If you see the activity details included in the map, you will have the complete list of options below.
  4. Use the gear icon in the upper-right corner to view your export options.
  5. Choose the format you wish to export. If your device records natively in .FIT format and you want to export that version, use the "Export Original" option.

The files you've exported from Garmin Connect can be uploaded from this page of the Strava website.
