Swimming support with Apple Watch

Hi I have been given an apple watch for Christmas and I was wondering if there is every going to be able to either  upload swims straight from the apple watch activity app or have the swim feature in the watch addition app

  • Soooo disappointed. I have been using Strava to keep up with workouts with friends. My Garmin used to sync with Strava, but it broke and I got an Apple watch. Guess I have no use for Strava anymore, as swimming is the only cardio I can do with my injured knee.

  • Over the weekend I found an app for iOS that seems to work pretty well. It can export my workouts from Apple's workout app to Strava after I finish them.

    http://stickybit.co.nz/

There's a version that does just swims and one that does all workouts. I've used it on an indoor swim, an outdoor swim, and an outdoor run. There's a few nuances to it, but if nothing else, it's proof of concept that it's definitely possible from a technology perspective to use an Apple Watch and Strava together. We just need Strava to make it a development priority.

One downside of this exporter app is that it creates duplicates in my Watch Activity app. But what seems to be a solution is to use Apple's workout app for all my workouts and disable Strava from writing to my Health database. Again, not ideal. But at least a solution that lets me have an Apple Watch and store all my wrokouts in Strava.

  • Yes- Please add swim tracking to the Apple Watch app.  It is the only reason I have not fully switched over to Strava for everything...  Thank you.

  • Strava has a huge Triathlete community and doesn't support swim from modern wearable devices??? We're now to the Series 3 Apple watch and nothing has changed. Strava needs to sieze the day with swim tracking or get left behind when someone else offers triathletes a better experience for tracking all 3 legs of their sport.

  • For the moment record it with the workout app and then export it with the following IOS app to strava

    https://itunes.apple.com/nl/app/rungap-workout-data-manager/id534460198?mt=8

It is not ideal, but its better then nothing.. Hopefully Strava will implement that you can see your strokes and laps better then it is now.

  • This has been answered before, but I thought I'd chime in - you can use the AW2 with Strava for swimming in two ways...

    1. Pool Swim - Use the AW2 Workout App, and upload the results from your phone to Strava via the simple but excellent Swim Exporter (downloadable from the app store). Works a treat - there are the usual limitations of any swim watch (rest not recorded, drills, stroke recording and others) but it works for tracking similar swims of similar workout type against each other stored in Strava - it's not 100% but I love it.

    2. Open Water swim - load up the Strava App on the AW2 and set to "Run" before you swim, upload as a run and then simply change (in edit mode) it to a swim once you are inside Strava. Not perfect, but again has only the same limitations as any other swim watch I've tried, notably GPS accuracy.

Not perfect, but gets the job done. I guess it all depends on whether you want to record all your swims with 90% accuracy (with a bit of effort) or moan about one of the best app/watch combos you can get on the market right now (hater's gonna hate). Personally I am a big fan of Strava (cycling app by the way guys, not swimming) and appreciate the efforts they make to keep up in an ever-changing tech world. Thanks Strava, keep it up.

  • Am I stupid or what? I actually bought an Apple Watch 2 so that I could track my swims and, of course, post them on Strava. It simply didn't occur to me that there would be no swim support on the Watch app, not even an ability to import from Activities.

    Wtf?

  • I will purchase Strava Premium when it supports swimming with the Apple Watch. Please add swim support and you will gain another premium subscriber. That should be enough of a reason. Strava, this is limiting the growth of your premium customer base. Why not also offer a tiered subscription model where you pay for what you need? Give customers the choice and you will be surprised at how you will be rewarded. Strava is already a great app, listen to your current and future customers and make it even better.

  • Much needed feature. Would tip the scale to pay for premium if this would get added

  • Strava,

Please add swimming (pool and open water) to the Strava app.

The workout app that comes with the Apple 2 / 3 watch is quite good, so you are falling behind!

  • I agree.. Strava please make the ability to upload swimming data a high priority feature.

It would also be great to have an 'other' option so users can include data from say a kayak paddle..

  • I also like to see swim Support in the Apple Watch App! I'm not even owning an Apple Watch yet, but will probably get one, once i can record my swims.

@Strava When renewing my premium membership comes up, i will consider 'the love' swimming receives from Strava!

  • Please support Apple Watch Swim ASAP.  You already support Garmin swim with their Forerunner watch, so why don’t you support Apple Swim ?

  • Adding another voice to the choir – please add support for swimming that does not require using a 3rd party App. Thanks.

  • In early 2018, we will be working on a new integration between Strava and Apple Health. It is possible that we will be able to sync swim activities recorded with the native Apple Watch app to Strava. Stay tuned.

  • Until Strava solves this, I need to wear two watches in the pool, the Garmin forerunner on one hand, which Strava supports and the Apple Watch on the other hand (to record to the health app) which Strava doesn’t support.

    How rediculous...

  • Bugger. That answered my question then. Thanks Elle for your official response. Waiting patiently (kind of) for a Strava swim function on my new toy.
