Swimming support with Apple Watch

Hi I have been given an apple watch for Christmas and I was wondering if there is every going to be able to either  upload swims straight from the apple watch activity app or have the swim feature in the watch addition app

  • Why not at least add swim workout tracking as a premium-only feature?  I'm a free user right now, but would gladly sign up for premium if that meant I could track all my triathlon activities with one app.  And then maybe add the ability to import workouts from Apple's fitness app for free customers.

I love using Strava to track my triathlon workouts and it's always a bummer to have to manually enter my swim workouts as simply how far I swam in what amount of time.

So here's what I'd love to see added to your roadmap:

    • Swim workout tracking (Premium)
    • Swim import from Apple fitness (Free)
    • Multisport mode (change activities during workout)
    • Triathlon mode (similar to multisport, but with the option to add transitions between activities)

Hello, I suppose the integration with health you were referring to is the basic integration made so that cycling/running workouts talk to each other via strava and health - However, Swimming is still not integrated as well as any other workout for strava is not being written as such. Any other workout that is not running/cycling doesn't get registered correctly in strava (or not registered at all) for example:

I do a swim with the workout app in the watch, it doesn't get written in strava at all (if you guys integrated, it should have?) if it was properly integrated as mentioned in the pinned post? or did I assume that it was going to be integrated as swimming as its own thing like running and cycling are? if i do the inverse and post first to strava manually as swimming, health just registers it as "workout" and doesn't get that it was a swim.

It would be useful for strava devs that have posted here to be more specific or maybe not respond for the sake of responding and follow up? This thread is over a year old and iOS 5 is around the corner and they have been adding new features. It would be nice to know that someone in strava is actually thinking about integrating more things other than running and cycling? Considering strava has options for things like "skiing"

Swimming is your 3rd main activity in the app on the phone (it is also on the UI for activities even), I don't see why it is not it's own focus.

    Thanks.

  • Adding to the other voices. Strava, please integrate swimming as an activity into Apple Watch app. Can you tell us if it's in the pipeline or not? And any timeframes?

  • Agreed, please offer some kind of solution to sync them! Manually adding activities is cumbersome, plus there is hardly any data :(

  • I am waiting patiently for swim synching/tracking with Strava & iwatch 2 workout app too! Would love to see strava to log both my pool(lap counting) and open water swims (GPS).

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS!! I would pay for upgrade!!!

  • Strava - you really need to add this and i've been patiently watching this topic.  You have enough demand for it and I do pay for premium.  This really isn't rocket science and the net result is that you have an incomplete fitness offering. I want strava to be my one stop solution for all my fitness data.  You are clearly superior with cycling segments (and that's awesome) but your are letting Apple displace you, at least in my mind, as the one who will aggregate all my fitness data.  The crazy thing is that people have been asking this for over 6 months and you still have no answer.  I guess what you are conditioning / messaging to me -  is not to renew my subscription because Apple will do it for free and i'll use the segments that you offer for free (which again are awesome).  Please let me know I got it wrong...

  • Another wote for swim support in Stravas Apple Watch app. I will go premium when in place.

  • Hey guys, I built an app that might be of use to you.

It allows you to swim using the built in Activities app swim workout and then upload this data to Strava.

  • Adding my list to a very long of people asking for swimming support.

    Priority 1 - swim support
    Priority 2 - triathlon with T1 and T2 support.

  • Yes, I agree. Please implement this. You can export from the Apple Watch to Strava using Healthfit App

  • I’ve been a premium member for cycling for years mainly for Fitness and Freshness, but now am swimming only and very disappointed with Strava. Pleases add swimming support or my premium is gone.

Elle, what is the roadmap. Over the last months all of seen is the feed change for the worse and lots of social stuff. All I want is a good fitness app which I am prepared to pay for! We need swimming support!

  • I'm not sure how this cannot be "popular" with the team...it has 195 responses - how many more do you need?
I think a piece of advice to the team is the following: If you are ever commenting about a roadmap in a thread again, be prepared to continue to talk about it and not hide away when people ask questions. When developers talk about roadmaps they should be prepared.

I am disappointed that My swim pro got integrated but Strava is not fully integrated yet like they do with cycling and running. Don't misunderstand, my swim pro is great, but the idea is the strava actually supports swimming natively, like they do cycling and running. Not just port over third party apps.

I have seen multiple updates since this thread got started and I still don't understand why this is not a thing yet.
I'm completely reconsidering my premium (or whatever is called now) if there is no satisfactory response. No, "I'm going to tell the team this is popular" is not the appropriate response. I'm sure Jess you have read this thread in its entirety, if not, I suggest you do.

    Thanks

Please add swim support for your apple watch app!
    That would be amazing!

  • Agreed, me and my bike are currently injured so I started swimming again and it is maddening I can't record to Strava on my Apple watch - especially when they just built in the running HR data for Fitness and Freshness. The various swim app platforms are far from Strava's nice UI - please add this functionality, seems like a no brainier value add for long time paying users such as myself.

  • I'm going to cancel my premium membership as I like all my activity data in one place. At the moment the Apple Watch activity app is the only way to keep Swim, cycle and run data - even though it's a very average app.

It's infuriating as Strava is so much better for run and cycle.

Integrating a swim function in to the Strava Apple Watch interface would make it to the go to premium application for literally millions of triathletes and would also convert many thousands of non premium members who swim in to premium members.

Please provide some clarity on whether this is in the pipeline and if so the time frame.

A lot of people would really appreciate the feedback.

  • @Shelby T Thank you for replying to our requests.  I understand the time and resources may not be available to create a swim module from scratch but could you at least provide a way to upload swim data from the Apple workout app via Apple's upload button? Or maybe work with Swim.com to upload or integrate data into your app?  I'm sure Swim.com would love to partner with you guys - it would give them a lot more exposure to triathletes. And it puts Strava in a position to be the go to app for all triathletes.

  • I've used a Garmin 735 for all my triathlons and synced all the data to strava for years including swimming. I've just been given an Apple Watch 2 and the native strava app is great but I'm really surprised there's no swim function. Come on Strava, as per comments above triathlon is a massive sport surely you're missing a trick here?

  • I'm echoing the comments since Shelby replied... very disappointed swimming integration is not a priority for Strava. It's a big hole in the apps functionality and seems like a no-brainier now that the Apple watch is waterproof.

  • Very frustrating, I was really holding out when I heard Strava was going to release an update that expanded fitness & freshness to multi-sport athletes. But I was really let down with the half baked version and no ability to get my swims from my Apple Watch 2 onto Strava. This really feels like a big miss on Strava's part, if you're going to cater your update to "multi-sport athletes" should probably make sure it does that.

Basically I'm paying for incomplete data tracking as a premium member. :(

  • I've been doing a bit more reading into alternatives after reading Christopher Go's post and really like the sound of the swim.com app. I'd seriously consider upgrading to a paid membership on Strava if swimming was integrated, but in the mean time I think I'll try out the swim.com app with the myswimpro app. Here are 2 good reads on these alternatives:

  • Perhaps instead of reinventing the wheel by Strava developing their own app, can the Strava app import health data such as workouts? I too have been using the Apple Workout app for tracking swimming and Strava for cycling and since the Apple Health and Workout apps can aggregate data from multiple sources, I wonder if it's possible to export specific Apple data to apps like Strava?

I have tried manually adding swimming workouts to Strava in the past but I found that I got duplicate workouts in the Health app, I assume because the Strava data would then be treated as another workout. Anyone else have this issue?

  • @David,

I'm voting up for your proposed feature list:

    "Swim workout tracking (Premium)
Swim import from Apple fitness (Free)
Multisport mode (change activities during workout)
Triathlon mode (similar to multisport, but with the option to add transitions between activities)"

    Biiiiig thumb up!
