Activity Search by type and location producing wrong results

I was going to see some hikes on Strava, but something strange keeps happening. I start with searching for Hike type, Ukraine as location ("City, State"). I get a total of ten results:

Now I want to find hikes completed closer to my home city of Kyiv. All of a sudden, I get eleven results of various types, although I indicated "Hike", not "All". In addition, results that have "Hike" as their type are not the same results I got when indicating just "Ukraine" as the location:

Any comments?

  • We've updated many of our search features since this discussion was created, including activity search. At this time, keywords are required for searching activities and entering a location is optional. Searching by location only is not possible at this time.

Get in touch with us directly if you're still not finding the activities you're expecting when using the search.

  • Thank you for the update, Elle. It would be nice to be able to search by location only. It would also be nice if Strava would show some reminder that a keyword is required. At the moment, if a user tries to launch a location-only search without a keyword, a search page with empty results is shown, and the user would not know (if (s)he hasn'e seen your reply here :)) that this is not a technical glitch.

  • The search function doesn't work at all, even as an option additional to a provided keyword. With keyword and optional location on city level I got many results, far beyond a reasonable search area, my case nationwide results and even results abroad. A formal complaint is taken and forwarded Strava internally. After that my ticket is immediately closed. I'm disappointed, I took premium membership especially for a location based search function (actually the premium function of downloading rides, and in that sense based on a location oriented search action). In the past it worked (now and then), also leaving keyword field blank. If one look for location based rides and one is forced to provide a keyword, the user should be very creative in his/her search actions. What would be the problem to provide a solid location based search function?

  • Where is the Activity search? It used to be under explore by "my activities" but it's not there anymore

  • Yes, Activity search is completely gone, and I am a Premium member.

Plus, it was tweeked last year so no longer works well.

I travel quite a bit and it used to be good for entering a city/state, then bike or running type distance, plus a keyword - and you would get some good matched routes.  For some reason, they made it so you had to enter a keyword to work and this stinks since it dramatically reduces what is available.  Sheeesh, Elle, you actually made it worse!

  • Thanks Elle,

In all fairness, athletes need to be proactive in their settings and take responsibility for what they show in public.  It's disappointing that this has led to this feature being watered-down and (now) removed.  Hope the Strava team can work out a solution.  I would like to see the activity search return to it's late 2016 glory with all search elements.

Thanks, and prop's for the Beacon and Route creation tools.

  • Hello Elle, I'm really pissed about this issue. 1. I posted the Oct 29th without any reply from Strava support at all. Now, several months after I addressed this extensively, a simple post popped up that features will be reviewed. I became premium member especially and only for this feature. I definitely will withdraw my premium membership and definitely will ask my money back. If this is not the case I will leave Strava entirely. This is not how you deal with paying customers. Mainly leaving no reply at all to explain is what strikes me most.

  • Strava, where is the activity search?  I travel a lot and find rides by finding what people are riding in the area.  I am a premium member and I not happy about this.  Those who did not put their activities under private should learn how to keep activities in secret.
If Strava is going to take features off, then gives us a discount.

  • I too will NOT be renewing my premium membership!  Activity search was a most useful feature.

  • For sure HEATMAPS and ACTIVITY SEARCH were both great features and I frequently used them both to find popular rides outside my normal ride areas.  BUT given recent revelations how some users have their profiles set I agree STRAVA needed to make some rapid and difficult decisions.

I would hope STRAVA is working with the necessary security agencies and will be able to find solutions that bring these features back, maybe in areas that do not pose a security risk.

That said, it would truly be appreciated if STAVA could commit to regularly post here on some type of regular basis (monthly, quarterly) with any information  or progress is being made.

For the time being, you will still be receiving my annual payment.

  • I can understand the discussions about the heatmap.

But I do also find it a shame that Strava removed the activity search.

I used this option a lot when I want to ride in an unknown area (od on holidays) to find trips do to on ,y bike in that area,

    Please put it back....

  • So, I've just wasted 20 mins of my time scratching my head thinking why the heck cant I find "activity search" under the explore section!? Only to find out that Strava has scrapped it.

This was the one and only reason I upgraded to premium, purely to have use of this service which was such an invaluable tool for me.

I travel with work between many different countries and relied very heavily on this feature. It enabled me to explore new places confidently and safely by being able to download other riders routes on to my Garmin to then follow.

It has also been amazing at helping me and my friends plan our cycling holidays and choosing routes to ride.

Ive have just informed a few of my cycling club buddies that its been scrapped and none of them knew it had gone and are all disaponinted.

Please bring this feature back Strava!! My Cycling enjoyment won't be the same without it. : (

P.s Will we get a discount now on our premium membership?

  • Donald, I used ACTIVITY SEARCH frequently to find long popular rides in areas out of my State for what I call “destination rides”.   The issues is I could type in Portland MN  & get lots of routes and lots of “real names”  So  could the BAD GUYS, type in Iraq, Iran, whereever and maybe find a grunt and his name running a secret fence line.  Then look at Facebook, etc etc. for more info if available I  can suffer a little to to keep our troops safe.

I would like to see STRAVA limit ACTIVITY routes to the USA only.  I don’t think we have secret bases in the USA do we?

  • Paul,

I live in the Netherlands, so I think your suggestion won't make us Europeans happy ;-)

I think that those users who's location should not be revealed, should put there activities in private mode and most problems are solved.

And so I can find activities of others in for me unknown areas to do some cycling, if Strava would offer this option again.

  • Paul, why limiting it to the USA only? There are many countries in the world in addition to the USA (and, on the other hand, those dangerous places like Iraq, where many Americans live, serve, and, unfortunately, die sometimes).

I would like to get this feature working e.g. to look for cycling routes around Kyiv, which is a safe area without any U.S. bases.

That said, I do have experience of defending my country in the trenches (I was seriously wounded in combat in Eastern Ukraine in 2014), and I do understand that there are always some people in the military being quite careless about the details they provide in social media etc. I hope, however, that Strava will find some balance here. Now I feel like my interests are somehow sacrificed to protect those people, and I do not feel there is exactly the right balance.

  • Donald, I generally agree with what you have said here. The only problem is about having so many stupid people in this world... It also applies to the military. I was a platoon commander in the battlefield, and I know what I am talking about. Even some real heroes can be stupid in terms of personal data protection etc. As a result, it seems that managers of Internet communities etc. sometimes have to develop some things keeping those stupid people in mind, and you and me suffer.
