Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • Not a fan.

I've pretty much stopped using Facebook when they implemented this silliness. Not even using any of the official Twitter apps anymore either (using a 3rd party app that shows chronological tweets instead).

I live in CA but follow a lot of people in Europe, when I scroll through my feed I want to see them all clumped together and not sprinkled in between the rides form my friends here in CA.

One can't really complain about Facebook and Twitter services because they are free, however I'm a paid customer of Strava, so I expect you guys to do the right thing and keep including a chronological order for your paying customers.

  • May we please have the option of keeping the chronological order? I find the idea of someone else deciding what I find important to be simply abhorrent.

  • This will probably get lost in the noise of all these posts, however; on my feed this happened. (Note: this is running focused)
This was the big local marathon weekend, a few of my friends and myself ran marathon or half marathon or 10K, marked as race. But at the end of the day yesterday, what were the top 5-10 things in the feed? So & so has joined a strava club, so & so has joined a strava challenge. Even a friend, who set a PB half marathon time of 1h17, that was only listed 4th on his feed after the strava challenge and club updates. Seriously? You think I'm more interested to know that he joined the strava challenge than that he ran a pb of 1h17 in a half marathon, marked as Race?

If you are going to re-order the feed, you must understand that the biggest highlights of most peoples feeds are their Races. Other highlights are runs that contain PBs at set distances (e.g. 10K, 1/2 marathon, etc.). Then activities that contain pictures. Other differentiators - I run a 17km run at my fast pace (4min/km), followed by a 1km short, gentle job home (6min/km). Don't you thing that the 17km run should be above the 1km run in the feed?

The point I'm trying to make is, if you can't order the feed sensibly, don't bother. Stick with chronological. And if you do want "Smart ordering" give users an option to select chronological.

  • I heard Strava were going to just randomly sort the segment leaderboard now as well, makes about as much sense as this... ;-)

  • One of the main reasons I miss my friends activities is that my feed is spammed with challenge notifcations each month. Lots of people asking for that to be turned off or at least selectable yet nothing has been done. I hate having any sort of social media feed as Most Popular first. Lots of people asking for default activity names to revert back to the original Time and Location rather than Morning ride. Why keep forcing things on people without an option to turn it on or off.

  • Hate it. I will cancel my premium subscription if we don't get the option to sort it chronologically in the next month. Surely you can't ignore the masses of people in this comment thread alone asking for the same thing? It's such a shame.

  • This is literally the decision that made Facebook an irrelevant swamp.

The mistake lies in an assumption that people are simply too dumb to scroll down to what they want to see. It's actually what makes using a site interesting... scrolling and deciding. It's interaction and it's choice. Just let us scroll, we don't want algorithms telling us what is interesting, next up they'll be serving fake news, heavily liked shitty memes, and crappy advertising.

As others have suggested, give people the option. If you think you've got algorithms that will make the feed better fine make that an option.

    examples:

Sort By: "Interesting", "Chronological", "Nearest To Me"

    (Filter)OnlyShow: "New PRs", "Events 10km+ / 50km+ / 100km+", "Last 24hours", "Last 7 days", "My Club Events" etc...

Fixing the issue of social butterflies losing track of 100's of follow updates can be fixed by giving the user the power to find them. Not by deciding what they see for them.

  • I've just been flicking through the 383 mostly negative comments regarding the new Strava feed and noticed something very unusual. They are all in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER! Maybe Strava could spend a year developing an algorithm to make a complete mess of this as well?

  • I cannot think of anything worse. I like chronological for my feeds, if there's no option to keep my feed chronological I will cancel my premium.

  • Facebook, Instagram and now Strava. Booo! Carry on being followed, don't become a follower!

  • How can I express my disdain effectively?

I like strava for a training tracker. I generally approach time and space in a logical, sequential progression. Why would I want a training app that orders my training log based on some other paradigm?

At least give us the option to revert to the time sort instead of this nonsense!

  • After being a Premium member for the last for years I've just cancelled my subscription as a result of the recent unwanted change to the Strava feed, I suggest others do the same, money talks!!

  • today, today, yesterday, 3rd Sept, today, yesterday, today, 1st Sept, 3rd Sept, yesterday and so on. What will it take for Strava to give this up, or more importantly how do I get out of it? Cancel my premium membership?? You have had the feedback, we don't like it, it doesn't work.

  • Just used a PC to look at my feed for the first time in a while.  What a random mess - please listen to your customers and give us chronological feed.

  • How about adding actual new features like supporting power meters for running, real swimming activities, addressing totally unrealistic cr's without me having to flag obvious bike rides, ensuring my run matches my watch for time and diatance, etc rather than wasting time and dev energy rearranging the feed and destroying it?

  • "We will be [...] releasing the new feed [...], along with close monitoring of [...] your feedback." - Elle A.

    Dear Elle,

How much more feedback does Strava need to realize that a majority of people really don't like this, and feel very strongly about it?

    Thanks,

    -John

  • Really don't like the new format. I have been on it for a while (apparently I was part of the trial) and still don't like it. I have just emailed support to see if I can have it changed to the standard feed, or if there can be an option to switch between the two and I was told that I couldn't and that the change was done so I don't miss anything. The only time I miss things is with this new feed set up. I was also told to post here, so I am. My wife and I have been premium members for some time but I've stopped that. I don't want to give my money to a company that tells me what I want, even after I have explained to them 3 times now that it's not.

  • Strava - you've lost touch. Athletes by their very nature are anal rententive - of course we want oi feed chronologically!

We aren't the type to say "oh look, a kitty" and be distracted be some shiny post that you think is interesting. All it does, is piss us off because it is less efficient for us to find what we want (athletes remember).

  • 7 pages of comments and the official response from Strava is completely ignoring all of those and basically saying you guys don't know what you want because you don't understand how it works... WE DON'T WANT THIS FEED!!!!

  • Just read the official response from Elle.  It's just the sort of response I'd have expected from Facebook, Yahoo etc.  There's no acknowlegement that the overwelming majority of Strava users do not like this new feed.  I would love to know whats going on at Strava - who's pushing this & why ?   It's obvious customer demand is not driving this so why ???   Has the boss of United Airlines just got a job with Strava....

Feeling sad - somthing that was brilliant is now bieng ruined & I don't know why....

  • Agree this needs to be optional. Also having the ability to filter the feed would be great, I especially find the notice of people going clubs useless.

Given all the other enhancements asked for (especially the one to allow the week to start on other then a Monday) that have gone unimplemented or even addressed I would think Strava's resources could be better spent.

  • Your new out-of-order feed sucks.  For example, when my friends or pros do multiple activities in a single day or even over a couple days, their activities are now shown out of order - if at all.  Makes it very difficult to follow along, and then I end up having to see activities in the feed again and again - while trying to find what I didn't see first!?!?!   Please stop trying to emulate FB/IG/TW -- those are fine for discovery - but in Strava, I want to see what my friends are doing - in the order they are doing them!!!

At least, give us a sticky option to keep the chronological feed.  No excuses that it's "too hard" - you already have that functionality !!!  Aside from this and the new white background, I have loved Strava!

  • I've tried it and I really don't like it.   Chronological order is far better than the new "facebook" style.  If you have to persist with "facebook" style then give paying customers the option to view how they want.

Strava is really brilliant and I love you guys for what you've done but this has really spoiled my user experience...  Please don't make us look to other apps

  • Too much garbage on my feed. Challenges, Zwift, more challenges, monthly elevation challenges, Zwift, Monthly distance challenges. I can no longer see simply rides in a chronological order. Premium membership CANCELLED.

  • What a joke this change is. I've voiced my displeasure at this change on EVERY social media site they use. There's pages upon pages on negative comments about this change. It's clearly HATED by all but they aren't lisenting and just pushing it through anyway. I've been a premium member for 3 years and I've recently cancelled it. Maybe they will listen when the money dries up? We can only hope. You're just making it easier and easier for a rival company to make a better app. The only thing you have going for yourself is the segments, and that's can be easily changed with a big user base swap

  • Where is the posting board for all the positive comments about the new algorithm?  I could not find one.

Your algorithm is not progressing and your customers are confused. Your decisions have opened the door for the competition. Your revenue models need to be restrategized, recalculated, and your product adjusted.  If not, welcome to Blackberry.

  • No. No. No. I DON'T WANT THIS TYPE OF FEED.    This is specifically what I dislike about Facebook.  I would prefer activities in chronological order.  Some people aren't interested in having a million people following them and want to keep a low profile while chronicling their workouts.  Some people don't necessarily need the "kudos" to boost their confidence. Perhaps they just want to see for "themselves" if they are improving and are not looking for attention. No offence to the athletes who are "for" this change but, Strava, please be considerate of all the athletes who do not want this and at least make this an optional setting.

  • Strava: you are breaking our hearts. We love you because you are NOT facebook. This is not "content". Ugh.

And how do you know that we are missing 60%? Because we don't give kudos to all the challenge updates? Because we ignore 2 mile bike rides? Sounds like some slick fast-talking facebook/instagram/twitter/etc dropout managed to con your development team into wasting a lot of resources.

All the junk from "challenges" "announcements" and "suggested athletes" is what clutters the feed. I _never_ kudo that junk, but it's right at the top. Algorithms. Why not fix the things we've been asking for for years instead of having an identity crisis and try to use algorithms on us? You already have the ability to filter a feed by clubs: expand that, don't waste your resources. What about the whole issue with wrongly flagged segments? Get your "algorithms" working on that.

  • Did you really ask many users if they wanted this feature? Really? I'd say judging by the comments from users here, not... It should be obvious to anyone who uses Facebook etc. that these sort of changes rarely go down well but on free services you just sort of have to put up with them. Hoever lots of people actually pay to use Strava so to see it going down this route is very disappointing. Please make the chronological option update as quickly as possible. You know you've essentially got most of the users on a hook as Strava is the biggest platform of its kind but please don't treat us like fish.
