Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • Urgh wondered why my feed seemed broken. How do I disable this? I'd like to see who's been out and when, basically chronological!

  • Also completely agree with have friend list or filters. That would be the best way to organise a busy feed.

  • I love how everyone hates this feature and strava claims it's "feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed." Leave it chronological.

  • I wonder if Strava employees all have 100+ highly active friends and think this feature is needed...I would be shocked if I'm not a "normal" user, with 35 friends, only 10 of whom post an activity each day. It is no problem to sort through those in chronological order!!! Strava: run the numbers on your users. Realize most don't have an issue with scrolling through the very few posts they see each day!

  • Hate it, please keep it chronological or allow us to keep the old way. Not only are later posts popping up more recently, but even the older ones are jumbled up, and it's no longer a timeline, just a mess which appears to make no sense. Really disappointing

  • I am looking a stopping my Strava premium because of this new feed.
Chronological order option like Facebook would work but the new feed does my head in!!

  • This makes me crazy. I liked how Strava was not like other social media formula. First you suggest people I may want to follow (I don't, if I wanted to follow people in my address book I would have already done so, and I don't want to be suggested to other people) and now I have to see my feed based on someone else's assumptions as to how I want to view my feed. At the very least, give us the option.

  • Dear Strava  - I don't prefer a prioritized feed.  Though it's difficult to see everything in a chronological feed, at least the responsibility is mine to take the time and look.  In a prioritized feed I never really know what I'm missing and we are all now forced to compete for each other's attention.  Other social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all became less useful to me when they switched to a prioritized feed.

If you must switch, I'd enjoy the option to toggle between a prioritized feed and a chronological feed . Like many users, I'd also like the option to create my own priority options rather than rely on an opaque algorithm.  Thanks for soliciting input from users.

  • I just got a message from Strava Support indicating that they are going to keep this feature that few people want and many people hate. Oh well, I've already started porting my data to Training Peaks.

  • FILTERS! That's what we want.  Read all these requests for filters.  You've wasted time creating something I don't need.  I and others have begged for filters.  I do not want to see Zwift or trainer time.  I really don't want to see runs and swims, and runners/swimmers may not want to see bike rides.  I've been Premium for years; this is the wrong direction.  FILTERS!!!  I promise to drop Premium if you force this on me.

  • I don't like this new feed feature. Why do I care about a Tuesday ride if today is Friday? Especially since I already gave everyone kudos?

  • Just don't.

  • Strava, I am so glad you’re 'excited" to share with us this this change regarding this chronological order business within our activity feed. Why do you not simply give us the option to choose how WE want our own feed to be displayed? What sort of dictatorship are you people running there? This is the last straw! You have recently removed average pace displayed from my runs and replaced it with elevation (when you deem it so) so now, I am excited to announce that I will not be renewing my 12 month subscription when it expires shortly!  P.S. The activity feed is so clogged with treadmill runs, Zwift and monthly challenges joined, why not allow us to filter this out of the equation while your at it? Also, allow us to filter certain people to give 'US' control of our feed, just like Facebook does. Strava, you are quite out of touch!

  • I have no idea why anyone would pay a premium membership to you people. Premium memberships pay for the wages of certain people making decisions obviously out of touch with what we want. Just read the countless discussions dating back for some years, still unresolved! Just let us filter the feed by whatever parameter that we deem appropriate. This is just another example of wasted staff resources. To whoever signed off on this...Get on ya bike!

  • No no no! How do you know what characteristics are most important to me? You didn't ask me! Let me tell you now - chronological order is what I want. As for what's "cool" you should understand that what is cool for one can easily be annoying to another. I know that what you propose will annoy me no end. Chronological order must stay at least as an alternative.

  • Can't express my disappointment at the new timeline. I used to love using Strava and following friends but the new update has just made this confusing and reducing my desire to use it.

Why not listen to your loyal community, as per the comments on here? No one has been asking for this. If you must keep this feed, give us the option to revert to chronological order.

When a company stops listening to its most loyal users, engagement starts to reduce and it starts to fail. I don't want you to fail.

Please be brave enough to admit you got this one wrong and change course.

  • "We will be [...] releasing the new feed [...], along with close monitoring of [...] your feedback." - Elle A.

    Dear Elle,

How much more feedback does Strava need to realize that a majority of people really don't like this, and feel very strongly about it?

    Thanks,

    -John

  • As per many other comments, I want things in chronological order. That way I DON'T miss a thing. Having an algorithm decide what I find interesting is not what I am after. I'll decide that for myself. If Strava insists on forcing this on users then as per many other comments provide it optionally and allow us to view chronological order. A step backwards. :(

  • This is unwanted, crap.  Users should be given choice.  Oh wait, higher suffer score will mean that activity is more "important".  Higher suffer score is only available to premium users.  i.e. if you want to be important, you have to pay.  Beginning of the end, Strava?  Is this your MySpace moment?

  • I have a friend on Strava.  Strava decided, without asking him, to use his feed as a "Trial" for this functionality.  Some of the impacts were:

    (a)  If a user waits for one week (say) then uploads their activities, those activities will drown out most of the other activities in his feed,

    (b) pro activities drown out most other activities.

He found it difficult to follow his normal friends on this "new and improved" feed.  They obviously weren't important enough.  When he complained, Strava didnt listen.  In fact, they were rude.   This is sad.

  • I was one of the unfortunate people 'selected' to trial this new feed (not by choice) and ive hated every single day of it. This has been going on for weeks now and I was hoping it would soon be over but no, it seems this is here to stay. this new system has made it impossible for me to see what im actually interested in seeing, namely my friends rides for that day. pretty simple. all i see now is my feed clogged with clusters of rides from the same person when they upload several old rides all at once. Ive been missing a lot of early morning rides from my friends because they disappear down the feed.

How this is an improvement based on what I want to see is a mystery to me.

so please, now that there there will be hopefully enough people complaining, please either return to the chronological order or yes, at least give us the option to do so if we want it kept that way!!!

  • don't like it. seeing a 15km comute from someone from 5 days ago on top of the feed isn't really interessting. please give us the option to still see the feed chronologically! and please give us a tool to hide swift rides!

  • How can I express my disdain effectively?

I like strava for a training tracker. I generally approach time and space in a logical, sequential progression. Why would I want a training app that orders my training log based on some other paradigm?

At least give us the option to revert to the time sort instead of this nonsense!

  • Please can we have the option to have the feed chronological back? This is not showing me the content I want to see and I'm missing things that I did want to see.

  • +1 for the option to still see activity in chronological order. Every single social network that tries to order posts for me in a different way ends up getting it wrong and showing me things I don't care about.

  • I go back in my pre opus comment that was much nicer. I hate this new feed, with a passion. I have no idea now if I am missing my friends' activities over the weekend. This was a very dumb idea on your part and you better return things back to normal again.

  • This is absolutely stupid. What do you think is my "top feed"? I want to view all my feed and and I mean ALL. Not just what your "algorithm" of what I think is my top feed. Please stop from turning Strava into Facebook.

If you really want to do this, just give option to view feed as chronological order.

  • I cannot find an option to sort chronologically. I do not like the new update and will drop my subscription without an option to sort chronologically.

*Edit 2017.04.19*- I have dropped my subscription. This is ridiculous.
