New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • I have completed 2x rides in the last two days and both times I see the data on my watch, hit save and nothing happens, no data on my watch. Very disappointing. Any troubleshooting help for this problem would be appreciated.

  • Should read no data on my phone after saving. Just says 0km this week.

  • I had the same problem with seeing the activity on my phone. For some reason the watch wouldn't connect with my phone, this is shown as a red symbol at the top of the phone. If you swipe up you'll see the message "Connected" in green if it is connected OK.

The fix for me was to put it into to aeroplane mode and then switch it off, connected to my phone and saw the run straight away.

  • For those athletes complaining about the cycling features on the watch - get a bike specific Garmin.
Looking at your wrist watch while riding is not practical.

  • For the last week, the AW S2 has been working very well for me.  The distance seems very accurate.  Huge improvement.

  • I traded my AW2 in for a Garmin Fenix 3. Guys, the AW is not ready yet for serious runners. If pace accuracy, GPS, altitude, heart rate are important then sell up and get a Fenix 3

  • Is there a way to confirm that you have GPS signal before starting the run? My first mile was way off but I don't know if I had a good signal before I started. Can the app use the HR data from the watch to give an accurate calorie burn? The ability to customize the stats that you see during a run would be helpful also.

  • I've now cancelled my premium with the following feedback: Sorry dudes, but the latest watch update has absolutely killed my use of strava. It no longer records my heart rate as I can't tether the app to my watch and I'm not going backwards to a chest strap. Plus every workout I have recorded via the watch app bar one has not uploaded to strava. I'm actually a software dev myself who works with apple watch apps and I cannot see how you have decided to release this, I certainly would not have!

  • I have an AW2 and still fail to see how this isn't a total disaster. Functionality is removed and that that is left doesn't really work. No thanks.

  • This thread was started 2 months ago. The feedback from strava, in this, the official AW2 thread, is nonexistent.

I understand that normally the people that would post in here are users that have issues. To bitch. You don't normally take the time to comment if everything is as advertised.

Unfortunately in this case, we are trying to get our feedback to strava, in desperation, so that we can get core functionality restored.

Not asking for something that is impossible (virtually every other app works dual device)

Not upset about colour (it's kinda nice)

Not asking for free stuff (most people in here actually have paid accounts)

We are just trying to get the app that we know (knew) and love (loved) up to par with the community that is still great. I love the social aspect of strava. Seeing that my neighbour just went for a run gets my a$$ off the couch to go myself.

But this is kind of insane. In 2 months, or even longer considering how long the AW2 has been out, there has been almost nothing from Strava. Just an update telling us that we won't be getting what every other app has. These requests aren't grounded in science fiction. There are justifiable user cases in virtually every single post that has come before. We are not whining.

I only started using strava about two weeks before the AW2 app came out. I thought it was great. I couldn't wait to start using it while cycling in the spring (we get way too much snow where I am to start biking yet) I was just about to click the buy now button on premium when the new app was updated. Decided to hold off. Just in case...

I've now purchased the pro version of Mofifit Run. I wanted to stay with strava. I really did. The motifit app is amazing. I haven't had a single complaint as of yet. It's also one click export to strava.

Strava I'm sorry. I really am.

  • In recent weeks of trying to use and put up with this poor app, I have on 3 occasions now where the watch just hasn't saved the cycling activity. Today the app just hung with the app being unresponsive during the activoty so nothing again was saved.
The app has good ideas, it it just worked and had flexibility of being able to use the phone like the old one it would be very close to being very good.

  • Has anyone updated to the latest version of Strava? I've held off as I am terrified it will break something, I seem to be one of the few that it is working for...

  • I have to say, I have been using the AW2 Strava update successfully on all recent runs (there was one dodgy recording where the GPS seemed to bounce all over the road but since the update it has been fine.) My runs upload automatically and efficiently without fail whilst GPS seems to start quickly. I'm not sure how the is so much disparity between users. Worrying.) I agree that NOT syncing to iPhone is definitely a backward step - sometimes I want to take my phone with me and it would make sense if the two could talk! I also ageee that pace/split time voice call outs should not have been dropped.

  • Thanks for the suggestion on a different APP Mofifit Run! I am extremely frustrated with a company that makes this change, refuses to believe it maters and is willing to lose customers rather then fix the problem.

I became a paid premium customer because of the tethering feature...Now it is gone and so is my need for Strava. Elle, I hope they pay you a ton of money to take the heat from us. My suggestion, get the CEO and Engineers in here to see these complaints! I wonder if they even read these boards or if it does not make a difference.

Something has to change or we all will!

  • Andrew M., speak for yourself. I ride mountain bikes on pretty rugged trails daily and am coming off a decade of Garmin bike GPS and watch use. Strava could do the same and so much more and was perfect up until 5.12. I have zero interest in a computer on my bars anymore. I loved the occasional glance to my wrist, starting and stopping Strava on my phone neatly tucked in my pack with a giant USB battery pack charging it for days at a time, tying my heart rate into my Suffer Score, giving me realtime live segment updates, sending a beacon to my family, and most importantly, comparing my rides to my community.

Now it barely works, is inaccurate when it does work, rarely uploads to my phone, drains my AW2 battery, sends no (Premium) beacon, doesn't give me live segment feedback, and is just pretty useless and undependable all around.

  • Until Strava have fixed all the problems with the Watch App I have switched to the MotiFIT Run App thanks to a post I saw on here today. I tested it tonight, I was able to start and stop from the Watch, I could see all the information I needed Intesity %, HR, Pace, Distance and Time, there is also a clock face which allows you to access the App Direct, it links into your activity on AW2 and Health App on the phone and it automatically uploads your run to Strava when you have finished. The activity on Strava still shows all the segments and the premium features of HR, Suffer Score and Race Pace Zones plus it saves the run on the normal mode where you get your moving time and not as Race mode where you get total time as the Strava App does.

  • Please can we have the option to bring back old version/feature set of the app?

Seeing as I need to bring my phone with me on my run, it seems stupid how the watch and the phone don't connect?? I like being able to glance on my wrist and see my current stats while also having the phone to see that I'm running the correct route.

  • Like so many, AW 1st Gen user, tired of choosing between audio cues and heart rate sensor. Don't fancy spending £360 on a new watch to be able to "leave my phone at home" (the only feature of this new app?) and still not be able to use beacon or audio cues.

    Premium cancelled.

  • Am off to Motifit also. It does everything Strava 5.12 used to and you can still export to Strava.

So just to be clear, I'm now using another app to do what Strava did to send my stats to Strava.

I wonder why Strava can't see what's wrong here?!?

  • Those using MotiFIT quick question is the gps on motifit accurate and other output accurate? I haven't used it yet but the app looks amazing. Not sure why I haven't seen more of it as it truely looks outstanding! Thanks for the suggestion

  • Ok so tried motiFIT just now. It is an outstanding app. Without doubt the best I have used on AW2, really if you haven't tried it you must. I read a few people on here mention it and thought they must work for motiFIT as the bummed it up so much. Having tried it my advice would be try it immediately. It's great. I was also skeptical as I hadn't heard of it before. Don't be foolish and let that put you off. It is absolutely the best AW2 app and will be the leader soon. Plus links in with strava so we can keep using strava!

  • Just cancelled my Strava Premium and setup a MotiFit account to try their app out. Not been for a run yet and already more impressed by it than the Strava app.

  • Runkeeper went through a period like this too: crippling bugs everywhere in their app, yet they spent all their development efforts on useless junk that nobody used or cared about.

Many people (myself included) canceled our membership and posted 1-star reviews on every new release. None of their updates got any higher than a 2.5-star average. Their all-time average went from 4.5-star average down to 3.5-star after four months. Finally they pushed an update whose release notes simply stated, “Bug fixes are coming! Thank you for your patience!”

Magically, Runkeeper is now much more stable. It still has bugs like any other piece of software, of course, but it’s at least usable once again, and they’ve resumed implementing features that actually matter. Guess what? The whole debacle starting with an awful Apple Watch app implementation!

At this point, I propose that there is nothing more to be gained from posting on this forum. We have made our wishes known, and Strava has responded in no uncertain terms that they have no desire to restore lost functionality.

I suggest we take our feedback off this forum, and put it where it actually matters: the App Store.

  • This new version of the app might be great for Apple Watch Series 2 users, but from my perspective it isn't great as an Apple Watch Series 1.

    My main gripes are:

    1) When I run it on my watch I no longer get audio announcements. Sounds like maybe that's about to be fixed.

    2) When I bring my arm up to see my pace, time, etc., which I must now do (see #1 above), my auto-pause settings cause it to pause the recording even though I'm still running.

Any fixes for these issues or suggestions while I wait for a fix?

  • There's one major plus point with Strava that most other apps don't seem to have… the ability to retain and continue a workout if the app crashes.

Watch apps are prone to crashing sometimes, and neither Nike or RunKeeper pick back up where they left off. The activity is just lost. Strava picks back up and continues the activity. Not losing data is important for motivation and training.

The recent updates have improved the accuracy massively. Half marathon run today, no phone, and clocked in *perfectly* at 21.1k.

  • A month ago I contributed to this topic and voiced concerns about the reliability of the GPS on my apple watch 2. The readings where way off. Yesterday I ran a 10k race and used the gps on my watch to record the run. I have to say, great work on the updates! The watch was spot on compared to the official race results! I still got some wishes (average pace, (taptic)km notifications, (taptic)heart rate notifications) but I'm glad to be able to use Strava directly on my Watch again without having to worry about reliable data.

  • As a Watch Series 1 user, it seems like I may not be able to use Strava anymore. Yesterday, my run was forced to be discarded because it "couldn't detect a change in my location," despite showing me the information I expected to see on my run (that is: mileage matched what I expected, time was right; it wasn't at 00:00 0mi or anything). Today, I told my phone to record the run instead. Which means I couldn't see my info on my wrist, and I guess also means I don't get access to heartbeat info anymore? Audio cues, also a big thing for me, are only available on my phone, so if I go back to the watch once whatever that bug was yesterday is fixed, I'll lose that.

I get that you're trying to support the new tech, but I really wish that the paired functionality were still an option. It seems like there's no other way to get all the benefits I used to get from Strava. I have a Premium Membership, but I probably won't for much longer if this continues to be the state of things. It just doesn't … work, for me.
