New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • Not sure if this is related to the audio cue issue (I don't run with headphones), but what happened to km split notifications? Please bring them back!

As an aside, adding interval training functionality would be awesome.

  • Please, add second digit after decimal place in the distance reading. Instead of 1.1 mile it should show 1.11 - 1.19 etc

  • I continue to have problems with the Apple Watch not logging its first GPS point until 15-60 seconds into my run. This is affecting total run distances, sometimes by 0.1-0.2 miles. I can share some example activities if you'd like.

Also, when I raise my wrist to see current split pace, etc. it auto-pauses the run. I don't want this, and auto pausing dims the display readout which means I can't see the values on the screen in sunlight.

Getting the tap-tap on the wrist for splits again would be wonderful, but I know it's on your product road map so I won't belabor the point.

The GPS accuracy and overall experience of the Watch app is good, I just wish it would pick up the start of a run more quickly.

  • I have had trouble with Strava not connecting to GPS at the start of the run--sometimes it would miss as much as a mile!  Strava tech support suggested opening the app on the watch a minute or two before beginning my activity; this works (I don't start the app, I just open it to give it some time to find the GPS); it is much more accurate.

  • I just wrote this as a bit of fun...

There once was an app called Strava,
which Apple Watch users found a palaver.
    At first it was good.
Things 'just worked' under the hood.
People loved it like a cuddly Koala!

But then Apple updated their gizmo.
Strava Devs got themselves in a tizz, no?
    They disconnected the tethering,
folk wanted to give Devs a leathering,
and asked, "Are they all suffering from excessive machismo?!"

The community weren't shy sharing their observations.
And so begun a huge conversation.
    On haptic, heart-rates and splits,
    GPS, pace and metrics,
And not forgetting their Premium subscription!

So let's hope for a happy ending.
With broken things fixed, and those that they're mending.
We can all rejoice as one
on our swim, bike or run.
And watch their success on Twitter, trending!

  • So Strava butchered a brilliant watch app so it could be used without the phone...

Ironically just had pop up on my phone GCN's "Top 10 things to take on EVERY ride" - Number 1... Your phone.

  • Since the update, I no londer can use Strava.  Iphone6s with latest OS, AW1 same.  Just get the strat button, but nothing happens.

I've deleated and reinstalled both several times, and done all the privacy and location nonsence.  Still nothing....

    Probably dropping Strava alltogether soon.

  • Hello,

I would like to see a "split dedicated" page with:

    current lap time

    current lap distance

    current lap average pace

    possibly current heart rate

it would be nice to choose enable/disable automatic 1KM split so that i can work with repeats wich might me longer or shorter or based on time instead of distance.

Lap should start maybe with a bezel rotation? The native apple watch running app has double tap on screen but it does not work very well.

I have a swimming app "swim.com" wich uses the bezel to set drills or repeats and it's very functional.

Thank your for your attention and good work!

  • Would it be possible to have audio alerts if we stray from a target pace?

  • Did the new update last night to add the AW complication. The app now just shows me a spinning Strava logo and won't open. Been working fine before this update.

  • I have an Apple Watch 1, and had no issues with the Strava app in my phone. I liked the ease of it, being able to stop and start easily, being able to have a display with my pace on it, and if my watch battery died, the phone app just picked up the rest of the run and recorded it anyway. The Strava update for the watch is a HUGE fail for me. I find myself saying regularly, "you are driving me to drink, Strava," and tempted to take my watch off and throw it after a long run that decided to stop recording at some point, or a great run that doesn't want to upload to my phone. I don't think I've had one run without some sort of Strava problem since the update. I have deleted and reinstalled apps off both phone and watch in hopes that will fix the problem. Nope. It looks like I'm going to find something else to use until Strava can fix these issues, if they can be fixed. I need the option to tether with my phone, see my run pace, have an auto-pause option that doesn't mess everything up or stop the app, reliably upload results to my phone, track my first mile accurately, give some basic notifications reliably. :-(. Is there a way to re-install the old Strava iwatch version? I was perfectly happy with that.

  • Like many here, and as a premium user I have been very dissapointed with the way the new strava watch app works with my original Apple Watch (series 1).  I use the app for cycling and  the main problems are 1) new start button is very sluggish to give feedback that it has started (~5 s lag). Leading to multiple pushes.  2) even though the watch is using my iPhone 6's gps, I can't display the ride on the phone until after syncing.  3) while it is a good idea to indicate the app is auto paused, greying out the display is ridiculous since you can no longer read your progress i  sunlight. This alone suggests how little test of the app was done prior to release.  4) more seriously, syncing with the phone has been unreliable and I've lost 2 full rides even though data was logged to the apple health app.  5). Fatal The problem is that the watch battery lasts only ~4 hrs running strava.  If the watch puts itself into power reserve, the rest of the ride is lost.  This was not a problem with the old app since the ride was being recorded on the phone.  You would lose watch feedback and heart rate but the gps track was recorded.  The watch app should at least recognize low power situations and initiate a sync with continued recording on the phone which has much better battery life and can be tethered to a large USB battery.  Unless we can downgrade to the previous app until these problems are fixed,  I'll have to try other apps (cyclometer?) and perhaps I too will dump my premium subscription to Strava.  Bummer.

  • Hi, on my aw2 after installed last update, I can see strava in the complication's list but when I choose a complication strava doesn't show in the list :(
I opened a ticket on this but not receive feedback yet, I'm the only one with this issue?

  • I'm using Strava in combination with 1st generation AW and iPhone. Since the release of the Strava app for AW I'm having the following issue.

The GPS data from the phone is about 400 meters of on a 10K run. Strava still records the run on GPS but the actual distance is incorrect. It looks like Strava (in the combination with 1st generation AW) is using the calibrated running information directly from the watch to determine the distance.

Before the launch of the dedicated AW app i was not experiencing this inaccuracy.

  • I keep having problems where I run and my watch tells me a distance and how long I ran.  When it synchs with the app and uploads its WAY off.

  • I find that when the watch auto-pauses that it greys the screen display which I find almost impossible to read when outside. Is there a way to customize the display color when the activity is paused?

  • Why do you say "No plans to add back live segments." ???? That needs to be added on the apple watch as well as a swim feature.

  • Well since the last update Strava on my AW2 is asking for me to log into Strava. Well I've logged in and it's still telling me to log in.
I've probably used 300+ apps on my Apple devices and this is probably the worst EU experience out of all of them.
How wrong can you guys get it.

  • I do see that for AWS2 users the update may be great. But to then defunct the use of AWS1 for heart rate in the process is diabolical, how can the update of a product be done to increase functionality for one user group while leaving others worse off in this modern technological world.

The apps need to be able to work independently but when one os being used the other should be able to mirror and talk with one another.

  • Morning. I'm finding that when used the Apple Watch watch is not uploading properly to Strava. It records ok and tells me how far I've done but then when uploading to phone it misses out the first mile and jumbled times around. Happening too frequently now.

  • Does anyone know for sure: If I run with Strava app and my AW2, and also have my iPhone with me and connected: does the Strava AW2 app use the AW2 GPS, or iPhone GPS?  I even asked "support " (Zendesk) and they did not know for sure? ("Likely" uses iPhone GPS unless watch in airplane mode) was the response.

  • Reluctantly cancelled my premium subscription today. As an Apple Watch Series 2 user, the changes to that app have made Strava very difficult to use for a 'fun' runner like me.  The watch showing the data from the phone was perfect, and one of the main reasons I chose the Apple Watch. I still want beacon, music and audio cues, so I now run with my phone and headphones, and the watch running separately (and connected to my heart-rate monitor, so I have to turn Bluetooth off on my phone to stop it pairing instead) so I get SOME data on my wrist while running.  Then, of course, I have two versions of my workout on Strava, so I have to delete one of them.

I was really hoping that the MANY comments here would convince Strava to bring back the paired use-case, like the competition have already implemented, but it seems like this isn't even on the roadmap. So, unfortunately, I'll be trying something else, which is a shame as there are many things I like about Strava, but it's simply not enough to continue paying for a user experience that is going backwards compared to the competition.

I'll be happy to pay once again if the user experience ever matches what it was back in February.

  • I run a workout yesterday with the last version of the app on AWS2, but I could'nt see any notification until I finished my run, and checked my notifications on the watch.

During the run, I checked screen several times but I never saw any split time or something like this.

Notifications without taptic alert are completely useless...

I think the best way to manage split times is the way the Apple Workouts works.

  • Another issue is that my workouts never upload automatically.

I must open the app in my phone, go to my activities, and wait about 10-20 seconds to see the blue message.

Workout uploaded automatically just once: the first time I used the watch app.

  • Hi there,

well I am quite satisfied with Strava AW2 standalone app. But I really missing split announcement while running. There is new release which give runner regular watchOS announcement, but it sometimes works sometimes not. Problem is, that new announcement of finished split does not make any sound or vibrate. I have to go to announcements screen on my Apple Watch 2 browse them manually. This is absolutely uncomfortable.

Best way is when AW2 will be able to vibrate after split and show or say summary (pace, time, avg pace, distance)

  • When using apple watch series 2 without phone there is a delay picking up GPS which always affects my run and timing. Any chance this can be sorted?

  • Ok a bit of feedback:

This works well for the use case where you are running without the iPhone app, however, it seems to be really standalone, to the point it does not communicate with the iPhone app at all.  This is quite disappointing in my primary use case: cycling, where I always have my phone on me.  It used to be that the apple watch mirrored the display of the iPhone so I could easily see my heart rate, etc.  Now I have to run a separate instance of a ride on my watch - which means that I sometimes end up with double data as this is handled on the server side.

I have also found it impossible to pair the apple watch with my wahoo tickr, (i'm trying to use the wahoo utility and i'm having the same issues) so I want to continue to use the iPhone app (it also provides more features... as others have said).

  • ok seems like the heart rate strap is now connecting, which is good..  (to both the app and the watch).

I suspect something got updated. when I launched the wahoo utility.

  • I am beyond frustrated. I had been running and cycling with the app on my series 2 watch for a couple weeks, and then suddenly the app icon on my phone just started showing an endless spinning wheel. I've tried everything I can think of:

    Uninstalling and reininstalling the app on my phone - and my watch;
    Unpairing and then pairing the watch;
    Updating to OS 10.3.1 for the phone;

Now no matter what happens, I get to the Set Up Checklist and can only ever get 4 of the 5 items checked off the list. When I tap Motion and Fitness it brings me to my phone's Settings/Allow Strava To Access - and everything is already turned on. THERE IS NOW NO WAY FOR ME TO CHECK THIS SILLY THING OFF THE LIST?!?!

So today I've spent over 6 hours troubleshooting and still have to run with my cell phone. PLEASE, PLEASE tell me I'm missing something!

    Thanks.
