New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • I cancled my premium subscription today & stopped using Stava all together.

Really dissatisfied with my running experience with the AW 2 + iPhone. No haptic fedback on splits, no audio cues and no ability to track metrics on AW2 when run is started on the iPhone.

I ditched the Nike running app about 10montha ago when they changed their app and Strava have done the same here, a real disregard for the casual runner.

Now that Nike app is slowly getting better and I have the flexibility to choose my run on phone and watch and still see metrics on my watch is the only reason why I'm going back to Nike.

  • Well, for me app on aw2 is ok but needs more feature like (pace average, voice feedback - both feature are available on motifit run app) and intervals training (until now I don't see this feature on anyone standalone app)

  • Am I doing something wrong?

Used my Apple Watch 2 Strava App for first time on a run yesterday and the distance recorded is approximately half what I covered and the time less than half - although that could be accounted for by the time I spent standing still!

Elevation plot looks about right and heart rate OK, although both show some lag.

    Any ideas?

  • Thanks, this is a great start. Can you include cadence for runners based on the accelerometer?

  • Hi,

    >>Also please note, that to support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2, we redesigned the recording experience to work separately from the phone. This means that we can no longer support the way the phone app and the watch app previously connected. Even if your watch still uses the GPS from the phone, the recording experience is the same as with the Series 2: the app functions independently on the watch

This is terrible! I want to use the watch to just display what my phone is showing.

How can I get an older version installed?

  • Hello,

This is probably more of a comment for Apple than for Strava, but I gave my AW2 to my wife and bought the Garmin Fenix 5S.

It blows the AW2 out of the water with it's functionality and features. It's just going to take Strava/Apple too long to get anywhere close to how Strava and Garmin mesh.

I haven't been happier with my change.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  • Its rubbish, it won't start, just a the spinner around the Strava logo. Very disappointing.!!!! Bought an apple watch2 pretty much for this , waste of money.

  • I'm wondering when there might be something super tricky on the Apple Watch app like a LAP function? There seem to be watches around for the last 40 years that have cracked that mystery so I'm hoping you'll be able to as well. There're a few other apps floating around that have sorted out laps and workouts as well - perhpas they could also help. I love using Strava and export my NRC runs back up to Strava, but when you're choosing to use NRC over Strava, something's gone horribly wrong! Cheers. Sorry for the whinge.

  • Allow audio cues at half mile on apple watch. Allow audio feedback for average pace as well as current pace.

  • I'm having issues with my watch not syncing all the time with my phone. This has happened multiple times. I usually see an error message on my phone and it says try again and it continues to fail.

I also had an issue this morning where the screen froze, the start button would not respond.

  • The strava app on my watch failed on a couple of apps. So I reinstalled this on my watch. It has now uploaded with new features however my hear rate information is no longer on my premium account. How can I get this back?

  • If nothing else, please just add a GPS fix indicator so we know when Strava watch app is actually recording time/distance etc. Not great to miss the first part of your run with no idea there is a problem.

Also please fix the split notifications as they do not seem to vibrate the watch and appear clearly on the screen during a run.

Finally, more customisation options would be good - avg pace etc

GPS fix indicator first please though!

  • While certainly less than ideal, and I agree with a lot of the frustration here, I have been using both Motifit and Strava somewhat successfully at the same time while riding my bike. I purchased the Watch 2 specifically to use with Strava, and I too had a few hiccups, so I stopped using it with Strava and started with Motifit. Motifit is $9 for the year, has a pretty nice user interface, does a lot of the things folks here are asking for, and you can upload the information to Strava! Currently I ride with my watch using Motifit, and my phone using Strava. I have played around with both and what I have concluded is the watch and phone calculate the distance differently for some reason. With either application, my phone ends up tracking with a slightly longer distance. It depends on how far I go, but it's usually around 1mi longer for a 15mi ride. So I am not 100% sure the software is at fault here in this particular interest. I am fairly new to biking, Strava, etc. and I am keeping the premium simply because I like the Beacon function, goals, flybys, and a few other stats. This is just my personal bandaid, and it works fairly well for my needs, but a single program like Strava would be ideal. Try Motifit, you get 3 free rides!

  • I've been using Strava v9.0.0 for my runs almost 2 weeks now and pleased with the updates. Here's a lot of recommendations and bugs.

    1. Sound/Tone: split notifications are good but an audible sound/tone is needed. A tone when the run is started, paused, and stopped would be helpful. Haptic feedback would be nice along with the sounds.
    2. Customize screen: be able to change what's shown on the watch face. Most of the time I'd rather my mileage be the biggest/centered on the screen instead of split pace.
    3. Post-run summary: display a summary of all splits when saving the run.
    4. Intervals: be able to setup interval runs based on time or distance. Audible cues are a must with this. If intervals cant be done, an easily accessible lap button would provide some relief. However, I'd want to see my laps after the run and not 1 mi split averages when I actually did 200M laps 4x.
    5. Bug: the sort order on the History screen isn't right. I expected to see my most recent run at the top but it's not. It would be nice to actually see splits instead of just the option to sync or delete.

Unlike several comments I read, I don't care about using my phone's GPS. I carry my phone for safety reason, not for tracking purposes. And thanks for adding the Strava complication, it's a nice addition.

  • Am having the same problem as @Paul Ketchen. Since the update I have been unable to set up strava on my watch. I get to the checklist and when I click motion and fitness it takes me to the settings page where it is already turned on. The "finish" button remains greyed out so I can't complete the set up. I have tried reinstalling the app with no luck. Until this is fixed I can't use Strava on my watch and have to run with my phone. Very frustrating!

  • Hi strava team,
I see on the community's motifit page, a list of feature to implement.
The community member votes what they do prefer. In this way it's easy understand how is the priority to develop. Do you think is could be a good idea? Otherwise, we continue post asking a sea of different feature... a caos:(

  • On over half my runs, the tracking does not begin until I have been running 0.3 to 1.0 mi. The History list on the Watch has the correct mileage (today was 8.2 mi), but after syncing, the Strava website shows a distance of 7.8 mi yet the splits table shows all 8.2 mi.

This has happened at least 4 times on different runs. The watch app is unreliable and improvements are needed. I hope you are able to get to the root cause and correct the problem, because I really want this to work.

While I have your attention, here are a few suggestions for enhancements:

    1. Keep activity data on watch for reviewing after the activity is complete. Add a manual clear button.

    2. Add a lap button, maybe with force touch.

    3. For timing races, a way to start the timer more precisely when you cross the start line. Maybe, along with item 1, use a Ready button to clear the memory and get ready to start, and then a start button to trigger the timer and distance recording within say 50 msec.

    4. Ability to customize the display fields - select 2 to 4 data types among elapsed time, lap time, distance, current pace, average pace, current HR, avg HR, projected finish time at current pace for a selected distance (e.g. in a race, it is hard to do that math in my head) etc.

    5. Add a swim app like swim.com

    Thanks for listening!

  • As a cyclist, the apple watch app gives exactly what I need, nothing more. It reads my Wahoo tickr rate, current speed and distance reliably every time (I have started using the Apple Watch app exclusively instead of my iPhone 7+).

My only request would be for the ability to link cadence pods if possible.

    Thanks a ton.

  • I've been using Strava on my AW2 for weeks. After updating to Strava 9.0, I can't link my watch to Strava. During the setup checklist, I can only check 4 out of the 5 boxes. The motion and fitness box will not show selected even after allowing Strava to access it. I have uninstalled the app, updated my phone and watch . Still can't finish the setup to link the AW2

  • I hate this update. If there was a way to revert my app back I would. What the hell were you thinking? Apps working independently of each other is stupid. I run with my phone and run specific routes I have planned out... Now I can't do that because the phone and apple watch don't speak to each other anymore. You've made it literally pointless to have an apple watch now... I want to use my phone to use strava and my watch to monitor my heart rate but nope. you've made that impossible.

  • This morning I choose to use strava for my competitive run.
Good user experience but data still not correct. On 6.5km strava registered 6.7km. Also Hr doesn't accurately, max 202!!!! Impossible, my HR beat max is 194 :(
    It's necessary to review.
For all the rest, very good, in particular vibrate each km with average pace :)

  • I have the same problem as Doug. It sometimes loses the first part of a run. The total distance in the splits section on the website seems about right, as do the split times, but the summary distance and pace do not match and show a shorter slower run. Sometimes it is missing as much as 1km.

What is even stranger is that the splits that show on the app are different to the ones that show on the website! The ones on the website are as I would expect for a known run but the app shows the first split as incredibly fast.

Is this because I have started my run before it has GPS lock? If so, how come the splits and total distance of the splits is correct?

How can I tell if it is ready for me to start?

    Thanks, James

  • My experience of Strava on my Apple Watch is (now) very poor. I have a first generation Apple Watch and Strava worked brilliantly on it until the most recent update. Now, I have to constantly check it's still recording my rides. Strava has 'dropped' rides after a few miles, and missed whole sections in the middle. It's flaky as. Personally, I'd just like it to work, and be compatible with the older watch please!

  • I like to use Strava app on my Apple Watch 2 to run. It work well but the auto stop is to slow. It could be nice if we can change the info on the watch like the live speed. The live pace

  • No, sorry, I'll do more than leave it there. Let me explain why this screen makes me want to bang my head against a brick wall. All three update messages are relevant. Usually I let update non-messages go with just an inaudible sigh due to poor customer engagement, but since you ballsed up the app last time with a similarly minimal message – and have been called out on it so many times in this thread – I actually find this lack of communication offensive to your customer base – not least your paid members.

Perhaps more annoying is a smaller (visually) detail - the version number. Why oh why is a major version (and a typically major major version number, usually reserved for milestone releases) jump simply labelled "Bug Fixes"? Do you know how version numbering system works? What are you doing? How have your developers became so switched off and why are you allowing it to continue? It's became apparent that something needs fixing at your HQ very urgently.

At this rate I'll be cancelling my subscription.. just as soon as I claim that KOM I've been chasing..

  • Open water swim.

I am confused. This morning i swam approx. 3K in the open water. The watch series 2 strava app can not choose SWIM as option (only run and ride). It tracked my swim very exact but the time used was too short (approx. 10 minutes too short) and the distance was 5.6K, which is as you see almost double.

Any idea if and how I can use the strava app on watch series 2 for an open water swim? I really like the GPS track function to see back my route in the lake.....

Thank you for updating the app soon. This would help me (and many) very much.

  • I like the recent Apple Watch update (once I figured out how to make it work, updating the privacy setting, that is not obvious). A small usability enhancement would be for the Strava iPhone app to automatically upload the recorded activity. Frequently I find I'm missing activities and then I open the iPhone app and it uploads a bunch of them. Since I'm recording directly from my watch I hardly ever have to open the iPhone app.
