New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • Thanks for the reply Lucas

I can't seem to swipe across to access the theatre mode while in Strava or the native apple fitness app?

I would also need to see the screen as I sometimes train in a certain heart rate zone, so using the water lock on the apple workout app is the only way I can keep track.

Shame, as I prefer to use Strava to have a log of my overall progress.

  • I find the running app terrible

I don't understand the nike run club app is much better

for instance I ran this morning my usual 11.7 km route; and the strava app says I did it in 15 minutes instead of 59 minutes

I keep on using it once a week hoping it will improve but I am disappointed every time

    its either wrong distance wrong time ; I would only use nike app which performs much better but can get it to download to strava;

overall I am very disappointed as I love strava and would like a more accurate running app

I don't seem to have same problem with biking app; stand alone

  • Hi there,

I am having trouble with the notification on my AW2. It was supposed to vibrate and notify me every slit.
For some reason yet unknown it stopped vibrating, even though the notifications are still there.

It vibrated for the first run and then never again. Did it happen with someone else?

  • I just switched from Nike Plus and went for my first run, and without wanting to sound overly dramatic, was quite shocked that there were no (let alone customisable) audio talking queues when running with just the watch. So yeah, that would be my #1 request for the apple watch app. Otherwise seemed solid.

I imagine this is an oft requested feature - sorry I didn't have time to trawl through the other 25 pages of this thread to check :)

  • Hate to say this, but the AW workout app is better than the stand alone strava app.

Strava has no tenths for distance, auto pause is hyper sensitive (raise wrist to check and it auto pauses), and syncing takes an eternity if at all (normally have to come out of the app and back in to it). NO audio cues??

The AW workout app has all of this and just seems to work better. Really disappointed because i think the strata community is better!

  • is there a feature for the iwatch to track swimming lengths...i know when i go out with my garmin the swimming is integrated and displays....but this option isnot available on the phone or the watch...given iwatch is now water proof and can be taken into the pool it becomes a good one stop shop...is this something in the pipeline?

  • Really looking forward to some further iteration on the Strava AW app, especially taking into account what a lot of users on this forum are proactively sharing with Strava Team.

    • Ability to customize/move around what metrics are shown on the watch dashboard - similar to how you can change the complications on your regular apple watchface (e.g. maybe I want distance or heartrate to be the most prominent metric instead of pace, maybe I want to choose whether to show lap pace, current speed, or overall pace, etc)
    • Distance doesn't show up to 2 decimal places.... This is strava, I feel like many many people here are fitness nerds and that we want the other decimal?! That way I can do my interval workouts more accurately
    • Ability to manually track laps (e.g. lap button press) for interval workouts
    • The overall GPS distance tracked has seemed to be pretty accurate for me, however the Live Pacing accuracy is ABBSYMAL and completely untrustworthy... The live pacing you look at while you're running jumps all over the place bouncing around by up to 30-60 seconds. The live pacing seems stabilizes as you get closer to the end of each mile/lap (I guess as the app collects more data about that mile the pace it displays becomes more accurate). Each time I start a new mile the live pace displayed gets really inaccurate again. This video from DC Rainmaker (https://goo.gl/AkUsNJ) is dated but it shows the issue I'm describing.

  • Lately, the watch has been missing GPS activity from the first 2-5 minutes of my run.  It seems to record pace and distance OK during that time period, but when it displays the run after, the overall pace is way off.  For example:

    https://www.strava.com/activities/1168748146

You'll notice the splits are each somewhere around 9:00/mile +- :0:20 and yet the overall pace 7:52/mile.  Looks like it decided to count the distance it took me to run that first .4 miles w/o GPS data, but not count that time in the overall pace.  Pretty annoying.  Strava's pace algorithm is pretty annoying overall and it does some really weird stuff with activities imported from RunKeeper, too.  I've been using the Strava app because I really like the way Strava reports on run data normally, but I may need to just move on and use RunKeeper full time.  I'd report this issue to support, but it literally takes weeks to get a response.

On one last note, the instructions for using the app say "Wait to acquire GPS signal and hit start".  However, there doesn't appear to be any indication as to whether or not the app/watch has acquired GPS signal.  Perhaps that would resolve the issues I'm currently experiencing.

  • @eric b. You can't see the start and end of your elasticity because of the security setting.

  • Has anyone been having problems with heart rate tracking. Mines been all over the place. Often flat lining at high or low rates.

  • Hi there
Firstly, thank you. I love using Strava on my iwatch.
Secondly, are you able to give an ETA for swimming measurement on Strava for iwatch?
    Thanks
    Sophie

  • I'm getting ready to purchase the Apple Watch series 3 and I use this app at least 3-4 times a week on my phone and I love it. Couldn't be anymore happier with it. I'm just not a fan off carrying my phone around on rides.

I am wondering if in the future since the New Apple Watch will support cellular connectivity if the watch app will eventually support the live routes/segments and maps will show on the watch interface?

  • Hi!
The actual Strava-App for AW2 isn't really finished yet and now Apple brings AW3 with LTE.
    What are Strava's intentions?
Will you stop developping the app for AW2 and start programming a new Strava-App for AW3?
Now there is cellular connection and more GB so you can implement ALL the features you have in the Smartphone-App with Beacons, Live-Segments, Audiofeedbacks, and and and.
(actually Audiofeedback and previously saved segments would've worked already with AW2).

I'm really looking forward to Strava getting the road again and correct the disaster of the AW2-App.
Now there aren't any more excuses. Hardware is ready.

  • Hi Elle - are Strava planning on updating the Apple Watch app to support the new Series 3 Apple Watch with stand alone cellular connectivity? Be great to offer real-time segment feedback and Beacon tracking from the watch without having to take a phone out for a ride...

  • Personally, I'm getting sick of spending on a pro subscription and seeing Strava do nothing but go backwards.

Strava removed featured from the AW1 app and poorly supported AW2 and who the hell knows when AW3 will get support.

Meanwhile, nothing has changed with the features on the web site in years. The races feature is a joke.

    I'm very unhappy.

  • Yep, I'll agree the AW1 app has gone backwards. I didn't realise there was an AW3 on the horizon so I'll give up any hope of the AW1 issues being sorted and maybe think about a Garmin...unfortunately the AW1 app was buggy for the first 6 months, pointless for the last 6 months so it's really been a failure, especially disappointing as it was one of my reasons for buying an AW1 in the first place.

  • Does an auto sync feature exist? I just completed a run using my Apple Watch 3 and the Workout app, thinking that it would auto upload to Strava; the way my Garmin 630 does. Nope! And yes I’ve ensured that my watch has all the proper Strava permissions. Do I have to record a run in the Apple Watch Strava app for it to show up on my Strava account? Wish it went both ways.

  • As a cyclist the main thing I'm looking from for the Watch is heart rate, with my phone as the main app show map and live segments. At the moment I have to give up heart rate monitoring if I want live segments.

Currently premium. But app's aw support at the moment is making me reconsider. Sorry, but true.

  • I'm having trouble with the strava app for Apple Watch 2 - every run I do is really wavy, compared to my running partners using strava with a different platform i.e. Tomtom/garmin and throws my pace/distance off. Is there any fix for this? Happy to send photos if required.

  • I've been recently comparing a run captured on the Strava App vs TomTom Runner data, Apple Activity App (GPS data extracted from the Apple HealthKit in IOS11) vs TomTomer Runner  data and it appears that Strava is only capturing half the amount of GPS data points, additionally, cadence (stride rate) is not captured from Strava which is a big disappointment.  I do hope the accuracy issues are sorted.

  • @CarrieJensen Rungap does a great job of exporting from the native Apple Watch workout app into Strava and other platforms. The native workout app, watchos 4 version, captures way more data than any other app out at present. Rungap exploits this and even gives you running cadence metrics etc. I have found it easy to use and works a treat. The native workout app is actually not bad, I now only use my Apple Watch series 3 exclusively and have sold my Garmin Fenix 5. I have no issues with the watch at all. Wish I could same the same for my ailing body at present!!!

  • +1 for Run Gap. Still sucks that you have go through a manual process to sync. Strava hang your head in shame, you should have had Health kit integration as soon as iOS 11 was ready. Run Gap. Well done Run Gap.

  • Why can't your app have an option to record on the apple watch or the watch & mirror that information to the phone?  Runkeeper manages to do it no problem.  It gives you the option to use watch or watch + phone.

  • I really thought that Strava would be at the forefront of the AW app development, but after seeing cheaper and better options.  I'm looking at cancelling my premium account.  The Native workout app is great and works well.

  • Because motion and fitness is no longer located where the app is pointing to on the phone I cannot finish the syncing process with my iPhone. Running iOS 11.0.1 and watchOS 4. How can I resolve this?

  • @markgreaves and @carriejensen. I use the same setup. RunGap does a great job of handling the data export to Strava as well as Garmin, Runkeeper, and more. I can use Strava to do the analytics and connect to McMillan Run Team for coaching.

  • I'm afraid to say that I'm not surprised at the lack of response from Strava to the concerns and issues raised here by Strava users concerning the poor AW app for both S1 & it seems S2. When they launched an unuseable app at the launch of the S1 they also failed to take on board user comments. With S3 almost here I have given up on Strava for AW completely and just bought a Garmin. Poor show Strava.

  • Honestly what are Strava doing???

Nike just released their new Run Club app with audio guided runs.. Runkeeper has so may new features. Strava is just miles behind. And it’s not just features, even the most basic thing like GPS tracking is so much worse in Strava.

Unless I missed it, there also seems to be new mention of Strava picking up any of the new WatchOS4/Apple Watch Series 3 features.

I’ve never tried RunGap but i think i may just use the native Activity app and export to Strava. But I think Strava should just implement the ability to pull the Health data from a run. They are just too far behind, too unwilling to make progress.
