New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • The latest Apple Watch update has cause the icon on my screen to disappear. Now have to press the crown find the strava app, open it then click start when before flick of wrist screen lights up tap Symbol and hit start.  Edit found it but must customise on Watch not through the phone.

  • 8 months on and not much in the way of addressing any of the issues raised in this really long thread:

    1) Apple Watch 1 used to "hand off" to your phone when the battery on your watch ran out. On series 2 it just stops recording. No good for long rides, traithlons etc.

    2) Ride app displays current speed not average speed, still. At least make this an option!

    3) Still no swim support, so using the swim exporter app instead.

  • Hi,

A list of features I would like to see on the watch running without the phone.

    1. Full configuration of display
    2. Distance to two decimal places
    3. Option to show current pace (not just split) and average pace
    4. Haptics/sounds to show (optional) every 1/2 mile, km, mile etc
    5. Elevation
    6. Programmable workouts - intervals, 5Ks etc, where it automatically stops

Also the big start button is really hit and miss - sometimes I have to press 2-3 times for it to even begin. Cost me 30 seconds of tracking at a 5KM race on Saturday - Strava subsequently thought I only ran 3 miles exactly.

    Cheers,
    Shea

  • iWatch2 issue - I did a Wattbike workout that unfortunately showed as over 160 Million Calories after Strava synced back to Apple. I deleted the workout straight away but now my Watch shows 20609 Active Calories every single day and is pretty useless for tracking what I'm actually doing. Anybody else have this issue???

  • The big orange start button is really unresponsive....I tap it, tap and hold, long tap, short tap...all different ways but it takes multiple taps to start. It’s making Strava useless on the watch.

i just went through two reinstalls to rentable htm, so we’ll see if that fixes it.

does anyone else have this issue?

  • I have been using the Stava app for about 6 months. I like that fact that it is clean and straightforward, however, I am missing functions or get frustrated with the actual operation such as:

    • The big orange start button is very unresponsive...
    • Since my Watch language is Hungarian, the audio is pronounced in a weird language... the app should either default in English or handle languages better.
    • SWIM support!!! Very much required!!!
    • Current pace would also be useful
    • Interval training.... this is almost a must!!!!!

    Thanks!

  • Many of the comments from early on still apply.  My biggest dissatisfactions with the Strava app on the Apple Watch 2 are:

    1.  I cannot do laps.  To do any serious training it is essential to be able to keep track of splits from speed workouts.  It is a standard feature on all running watches, so far as I know.  I don't know why this feature has been ignored or is so slow in coming.

    2.  The watch should calculate to the hundredths.  Right now there is no way to know for sure when you have done a .25 mile split, for example, because the watch only shows 10ths of a mile.  This is pretty important for training purposes.

  • Since the last version update, I have lost GPS and HR Bluetooth on 3 out of the last 4 runs.  Sometimes it picks up again a mile or two down the road. Today it just spinned around a strava symbol until I gave up.   Wasn't sure if this is just me?   Also having the issue of "starting" a run and nothing happens until it tells me my run started 30 seconds ago.

  • When are people going to give up on the shocking Strava apple watch app. Use RunGap and the native workout app. Works great and also gives you access to music mid run etc.

  • I won't be renewing my premium membership unfortunately it was paid for through June of 2018. Here are the complaints:

    1. Performance is a serious issue, the software should work and not crash or be unresponsive 50% of my runs since moving to watchOS 4 on the a series 2 nike+ watch.

    2. If it crashes the fact you need to then reload the app with the phone is terrible. Whats the point of being able to untether from phone if it fails so often and you need to reinstall with a phone.

    3. Lack of updates or announcements to acknowledge or fix the issue. $60 per year is steep for something that the watch does natively for free. I'm all for supporting a company but eventually I can't justify the cost.

    4. I should never ever loose data. I've had this happen on a couple of runs since moving to watchOS4.

All the above is done while running the watch without a phone, listening to music to AirPods, and trying to have Strava work. I suspect better hardware would help but the native app can handle everything so much better so to me it looks like Strava is just behind and has bad developers.

  • Hi Strava team - I would really love to record my swims through my Apple Watch - currently can only do runs & rides - so just end up missing out on my swim data in Strava.

    Thanks

  • @Gavin .. why not just use the native Workout app to record your swims .. it works great. There is a 3rd party app called HealthFit that will then upload the swim directly from Apple Health to Strava .. it also works great.

This swim was recored with the Workout app and uploaded to Strava with HealthFit.

  • Every time I try to record a run with my watch it requests that I log in to the app on my phone, then I have to setup the app on the watch again and again.

    edit - leaving Strava ✌🏻

  • Apple watch app stops working after 11 seconds which at that point it tells me that it is autopaused while I am moving. I found that if I put the watch into airplane mode and have it disconnected from the phone the app works. Also, when ending an activity with the phone attached, it will tell me it is unable to connect to the phone.

  • Strava,

I'm a new premium member and I have a few issues...

    1. In order to use the beacon I have to activate a ride on my phone...

    2. In order to use the watch, I have to activate a ride on my watch...

In the end, I'm activating 2 rides, and then saving 2 rides. Then I have to go back and delete one...  This is tedious and a bit silly.

How about this simple fix: If the watch is connected to the phone, make the watch and phone work together instead of always standalone! If the watch is not connected, then make them work separate.

I liked it much better when I could activate a ride from my watch, then pull my phone out and see how I'm doing.

Oh, and like the others said... the start button on the watch is completely faulty.

  • Good luck Chuck, I had the same request earlier this spring after the app changed but ultimately canceled my prem plan and switched to Runkeeper. I missed the social aspects in strava but Runkeeper does exactly what you described and they have a live tracking feature as part of their prem plan as well that works without having to run dual activities and you can start it from your watch.

  • The missing feature which stopped me using the watch app is simply a way to lock the watch screen! If I'm riding with a jacket on, the sleeve tends to interfere with the watch screen and will generally either stop my ride or turn my ride into a run or something else equally annoying.

The only workaround is to start the activity, then press the crown to go back to the main watch screen and then swipe up to tap the droplet to activate the screen lock however that isn't reliable as now the Strava app is effectively backgrounded so quite often will be killed off about 5 minutes after starting my activity so I still end up with incomplete data.

The built in watch workout app allows you to do this; start activity, swipe, tap lock, done. Why can't Strava copy this and implement it in their app?

For now I've gone back to just using my phone to track activities and has been much more reliable. As a premium member I'm strongly considering cancelling my subscription as Strava won't have any incentive to fix it otherwise.

  • Guys, Run Gap and the native Activity Watch app is all that you need. Give up with the rubbish Strava app. Strava are clearly not interested in fixing the issues for Apple Watch users. You just need to use the native Activity app, you can lock the screen really easily, you get all the detail you need during an activity, you can do laps, you can use it for swimming, you can do multi sports AND it has not crashed once in the 12 months that I’ve used it (pretty impressive!). And then just open Run Gap after your activity and it will sync with most popular platforms.

  • Will there eventually be options for indoor activity, such as trainer, treadmill or general work out? Thanks!

  • Apple Watch native Activity app is near perfect (has all necessary features and is very stable) and RunGap or HealthFit to export to Strava ! it's really dead simple !

  • @Frederic H. and @Chris Lydon  .. I have tried the native Workout app with RunGap and have had many issues with it. Namely, it often doesn't pick up the GPS signal at the start of a run, and thus will sometimes start you up to 500M away from your actual start point.  Also, I had 2 of my last 5 runs not sync over to the phone.

Additionally, the Workout app smooths the GPS track excessively, thus cutting corners and giving inaccurate distance measurements.  Zoom into the track and you'll see what I mean.

Also, no voice feedback is a big issue for me with the Workout app.

I have been using the Strava app with my Apple Watch 3 LTE exclusively for the past month or so and have had none of these issues, plus I get voice feedback each mile and don't have to fool with using other apps to get the data to Strava.

  • It seems like if your desired interface is the Apple Watch, premium features simply are not available to you.

  • @elleanderson Is there any chance we may be able to see current elevation achieved during an Apple Watch series 2 bike workout in a future update? As of now you can only see elevation gained after you finish and save the ride.

It would be great if one could scroll down to see more stats while using the watch app.

  • @Warren Thayer.  Like others have in this tread, I would strongly recommend switching to abvio cyclemeter to get a watch app that works reliably and provides realtime data to the watch while running on your phone.  The app can be configured to auto upload your ride to strava (and/or other sites) after finished.  BTW cyclemeter tech support is very responsive.  I switched this past spring and have not run strava on my watch since then. It is what Strava for the watch might have been.

  • Dear Elle and the rest of the Strava Team,

Due to your inability to listen to your paying customers, I have left Strava as a premium user. It is funny how much negative feedback the implementation of the apple watch app has received without actually resolving any of the issues that matter. All because 12 months ago you went gun ho without actually asking your customers what they wanted.

Ps. I have facebook / instagram / snapchat / you name it to post on strava. It isn't a social media platform, no matter how much you want it to be so you can drum up advertising revenue.

happy to discuss at any time

  • once again, i write to express my disappointment on the app.

it has been 3 rides that strava whether on apple watch or on the iphone stops recording for no reason.

After i finish my ride i try to upload it just to realize there was no recording at all.

  • Can anyone recommend an activity app that actually works with Apple Watch? I've been using Runkeeper for the last year but it has now become unusable as you can't start it from the watch and if you start it on the phone as well you get two runs recorded. Shame as it was working perfectly until a recent iOS upgrade.

Tried Runtastic for the nth time but doesn't even start. Nothing.

    Anyone used Runmeter recently?

  • Same here, I've given up on Strava now and moved to using the native iOS app and sync'ing with RunGap.

Amazed that Strava are just ignoring this app and have left us with a crippled version that works worse than the original did :(
