New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+. 

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

  • Just got an AW3 and went for my first run tonight with Strava app. Worked great and mileage and split times seemed to be accurate. As a few other users have posted would love to see a couple items in future releases:

    - capability to configure metrics on the strava tracking screen (want mileage as my “big” metric)
    - voice announcements giving progress overview of last split upon split/mile completion. This is a great feature on phone app.
    - nice to have- capability to setup custom activities and custom metric tracking. This is a great feature available with the suuntos and moves count.

    Keep up the great work team Strava!

  • Hello, I have problems when synchronizing an activity that I recorded in the Apple Watch Series 3 with the Strava application. That activity is not synchronized with the app strava of my iphone. Could somebody help me? Thank you.

  • THIS IS FIXED NOW.  THANKS Strava. Strava: Gotta change the heart rate display on the watch.  It's showing average heart rate during a ride.  This is completely useless.  I need to know my current heart rate, not average.  I pretty much know that my average heart rate on a ride is going to be 145-150 bpm before I even get out of bed in the morning.  It's so annoying that I might have to dump the Strava app and go back to cyclemeter for real-time data and tracking.

  • I like the new watch interface. It reacts faster on touch, and faster to start a workout. The layout is improved as well.  Great that you added indoor workouts, about time!

    Heart rate seems to refresh faster, but is also gets stuck on the same rate for long periods of time, and I had a ride recently where it was constantly way too high.

    The biggest problem I have is that when I am done with the workout (bike workouts of no more than 1.75 hours), the watch has run out of power by early evening.  It must be the app because this only happens on days when I am using it. Is there a solution to this?

    I have a first generation Apple Watch, and an iPhone 7 Plus.

  • It would be great to mark your own splits. Especially for interval training. That's the only thing Nike Run Club does better than Strava😉

  • I don’t know if this has already been posted. Why does Strava not smooth all the gps data points post run using something like the Kalman Filter which the standard Activity App does post run. Also would be nice be be able to choose different Run metrics on the watch app, i.e Heart Rate zones, current pace, last mile split, predicted finished time etc. I’m glad Strava have continued to work on the watch app development.

  • I was able to use my Apple Watch Series 2 independantly on a run, without my watch.

    There was no problem syncing when i got back, until a recent run.

    Here's what happened.

    - recorded and completed the run on my Apple Watch

    - My watch went into powersaving mode

    - Reached home, charged my watch.

    - The run is now unable to be synced to my phone.

    I tried to press the sync button (for this particular activity) on the Apple Watch Strava App, but it doesnt work.

    I did another test run, and this new workout sync-ed fine, all except one activity that just refuses to be synced!

    I think the key problem is -  there is no way to sync an activity manually (even if the user chooses to sync the same activity multiple times) from Apple Watch to iPhone Application

     Another note:

    On my Apple Watch Strava App, the sync-ed activities are supposed to be in Grey, but none of them are.

  • I have recently purchased an Apple Watch ser 2 and used it with the Strava app for the first time yesterday. I went for a Cycle and everything worked as should. However when I finished my workout it did not sync to the iPhone app automatically. I have tried to sync it manually in the Apple Watch via the Settings, History but when I tap sync it just returns to the previous screen. Any ideas how to fix this issue. I’ve tried switching off the phone and watch but still no joy.

  • It would be helpful to be able to chance the options for recorded activities on the Apple Watch app. For example, I live in Arizona so I never nortic ski but I do Kayak! Unfortunately, kayaking is not sn option at this time, neither is swimming. Also it would be great to be able to organize the activity options so that frequent activities are at the top.

  • Any update on upcoming fix for wet fingers issues?
    A lot of progress has been made in the last couple years, but I still have issues ending a trail run when raining or in very humid conditions. Last time after a 21k trail run by 30 Celsius and with rain, I had to ask around for a dry finger. The third volunteer was able to stop it...

  • Apple application support center is the place or platform where customers register their complaints. Sometimes, People who are using Apple applications found an error which says "Apple application support was not found". We face this error when the iTunes installer fails to complete its installation process because they were either not available in the installation package or unable to access all the install files. There are Two methods to resolve this error.

    1- Running iTunes Application as Administrator.

    2- You need to check the compatibility of the system.

  • Hi. I'm having major problems with GPS recording using Apple Watch series 3. It worked well for the first few weeks after purchase, but since late June I've had problems intermittently, and since 7th July have not had a single activity record properly. On a couple of occasions, the watch app fails to pick up any change in position and doesn't record the activity at all. Have tried various things suggested in your section on GPS troubleshooting for iOS without success (but these seem to relate mostly to GPS tracking using an iPhone). Becoming really annoying. Any ideas?

  • Will Strava ever add the feature back in to have the phone and watch in sync so I can start my run with my watch but still use beacon and listening to audio cues through my phone connected headphones?

    as there are so many comments here I’m not sure if I missed the answer but are there any plans to rework the Apple Watch function to just mirror the Strava Phone App where I usually start my runs etc to get the full Strava experience?

    I have tried all your competitors and all of them are back into this, MapMyRun and Endomondo use the App as a Mirror of the phone or you can use it standalone, the same with Runkeeper. Runtastic goes even further  and let the user decide which mode I want to use.

    In January I’ve switched to Strava Summit because I like the Phone and Web App with all Statistics and features and social connections, but your implementation of the Apple Watch App is useless for me so I’m not using Strava any longer to record activities, I just sync from Runkeeper, so the subscription is kind of useless for me. Would be great to get an announcement from your side what is planned or not with your Apple Watch implementation please.

  • Outside of the updated description on this post, there has been no official update on their future plans I can find. I dropped premium the day the watch was updated with the standalone tracking.

    I have been using Runkeeper as well, it is by far the best for having all the features and syncing between them. I haven't had a single run not properly track all summer which I can't say was ever the case with Strava's app. 

    If they ever "fixed" the app they broke I would come back, I do sync my activities to Strava still for the social aspect which I like.

  • Hello Strava team !

    First I would like to thank you all for the great things you gave us these last 6 months.

    But, Social features are not what I expect now. I recently bought the Apple Watch 4 and I am kind of disapointed because I can't place Strava complication anymore on new watch faces... I mean, Watch OS 5 announced in June, new devices on september, sounds like my Summit/Premium subscription is paying data storage of the free users... instead of your talented ios developpers.

    Then, I think it's time to redesign the apple watch app the way you did for the iPhone. Smarter, display more datas (elevation? Segment start? etc) .
    Many of us had a dedicated sport watch like Garmin or Suunto etc before switching to the Apple Watch. 
    I know that syncing real time data is complicated but you could make things better. Those who go for a 6 hours run wear sport watches, please don't give us battery life reasons.

  • I'm new so, please excuse me if i'm wrong but this is my problem:

    I use Strava app on iphone to follow a map and record my run;

    I'm not able to record heart monitoring from my apple watch serie 4, excepted if i dont use strava Iphone app at the same time... and in this case, i'm not able to use the map..

    Is there a solution ?

  • @Julien Perrin, don't bother. Use the WorkOutdoors App if you want the full on features that you'd find in a Garmin or Suunto, then export the data to Strava using Healthfit or RunGap. Works every time. You get everything you're wanting, and then some. Look for it in the App Store.  Alternatively, use iSmoothRun.

  • @Gilles S. Both are independent ways to record activities depending on which one you're starting from. The Phone will sync the activity if it was recorded with the watch (HR, no phone to carry). If you start the activity from the phone, the watch is useless, it will only give you time and weather  :)
