New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • Outside of the updated description on this post, there has been no official update on their future plans I can find. I dropped premium the day the watch was updated with the standalone tracking.

I have been using Runkeeper as well, it is by far the best for having all the features and syncing between them. I haven't had a single run not properly track all summer which I can't say was ever the case with Strava's app.

If they ever "fixed" the app they broke I would come back, I do sync my activities to Strava still for the social aspect which I like.

  • Hello Strava team !

First I would like to thank you all for the great things you gave us these last 6 months.

But, Social features are not what I expect now. I recently bought the Apple Watch 4 and I am kind of disapointed because I can't place Strava complication anymore on new watch faces... I mean, Watch OS 5 announced in June, new devices on september, sounds like my Summit/Premium subscription is paying data storage of the free users... instead of your talented ios developpers.

Then, I think it's time to redesign the apple watch app the way you did for the iPhone. Smarter, display more datas (elevation? Segment start? etc) .
Many of us had a dedicated sport watch like Garmin or Suunto etc before switching to the Apple Watch.
I know that syncing real time data is complicated but you could make things better. Those who go for a 6 hours run wear sport watches, please don't give us battery life reasons.

    Please let us know

  • I'm new so, please excuse me if i'm wrong but this is my problem:

    I use Strava app on iphone to follow a map and record my run;

I'm not able to record heart monitoring from my apple watch serie 4, excepted if i dont use strava Iphone app at the same time... and in this case, i'm not able to use the map..

    Is there a solution ?

  • @Julien Perrin, don't bother. Use the WorkOutdoors App if you want the full on features that you'd find in a Garmin or Suunto, then export the data to Strava using Healthfit or RunGap. Works every time. You get everything you're wanting, and then some. Look for it in the App Store.  Alternatively, use iSmoothRun.

  • @Gilles S. Both are independent ways to record activities depending on which one you're starting from. The Phone will sync the activity if it was recorded with the watch (HR, no phone to carry). If you start the activity from the phone, the watch is useless, it will only give you time and weather  :)

    Another needed improvement...

  • Any updates to the app in 2018 to restore the features it used to have? I miss the days of being able to use beacon, stream music from spotify to my headphones with audio cues from strava, and have heart rate read from my apple watch. I know this requires bringing my phone (no cellular watch for me) but I like having it.

I need to renew my runkeeper pro but would prefer to purchase strava summit if these features have been added back yet. Thanks for any update.

PS - swims auto sync yet from apple health? The official post said in 2018 but mine doesn't work yet.

  • So many people talked to me about Strava. How is this app great.
And I have to say Yes - the feature that I like most is segments.

    BUT

Neither now 2019 they are not allowed with AW4.
So there is almost no reason to stay with strava. There are so many apps that have better interface, that let you really make your plan (not that joke with Strava premium plans, where you cant even change in what day You will run long runs. It must to be Sunday :D )

AW4 needs segments, needs maps, ...
than it will be really great app.

  • Hello! On my Apple watch 4, in the strava application, there is no possibility of choosing the training “swimming in the pool”. How can I change this? I need this opportunity! Thank.

  • When will I be able to see the map on my phone and ride metrics on my watch?

  • Just to add my voice to everyone else's above - it would be great to see the Strava Apple Watch app develop further.

Specifically it would be great to have:

    - a more appealing stats screen that's shown during activity recording, ideally that's customizable

    - live segments

    - overall be less buggy

  • Is someone still waiting for a Strava official statement about the future of the apple watch App ?

I think your latest 'partnerships' with Suunto and Garmin speak by themselves. Apple watch is clearly not a priority for you. Take their money, that's fair, but you won't get mine anymore.

You're losing the spirit of what made Strava so special at the beginning (you built a great concept initially based on Apple products). I signed up in 2013, subscribed Premium in 2014. I know you won't miss my 50€ that much, but the way you ignore AW users requests means you don't care or simply can't build a real app on this device.

  • Hello, I have the newest Apple Watch. It stopped syncing in strava today. I have uninstalled on both my iPhone and watch. I reinstalled and followed all instructions to set up. I now cannot start an activity on the watch. Any ideas to solve? Everything online suggested I have tried.

    Thanks
    Andrew Macphail.

  • Why can’t I record a swim on the Strava app on my Apple Watch 4?

  • In the last week, I've been experiencing a new, rather permanent issue with the Watch app. It is crashing 100% of the time I open the app, dropping me back to the watch face. I've tried rebooting the watch, uninstalling/reinstalling the watch app but to no avail. I have the latest version of the app. Is there a new bug that was introduced and if so, any ETA on resolving it? Thank you!

  • Stephen - I experienced the same thing.  It turned out my watch needed to be updated, even though I hadn't gotten a notification.  If you update the watch, Strava should start working again.

  • Still no joy with the Apple Watch app just crashes all the time even been into the apple shop they said email Strava as they have a a lot of frustrated customers in but they just seem to fob you off with we are working on it but basically there not interested unless you have bottomless pockets to go and buy another device 😡😡

  • Guys. Just dont use strava for track your activity.
There is much more better alternatives / iSmoothrun (amazing for customised workouts) or Workoutdoors (with offline vector maps).
Strava is great platform for connecting runners. But its not ideal for track your activity.

  • I also have terrible reliability issues with the watch app. I went for a bike ride and 30 minutes into it, I look at my watch to see how far I’ve gone and it showed 0.1 miles. Outstanding! The app will crash randomly during a workout as well. I simply use the iPhone app to record runs and rides.

I’m equally disappointed they haven’t added swimming. I have to run the VERY reliable Apple app during the swim, then manually enter the data into Strava. That’s silly.

  • Apple watch doesn’t work if you sign in with Facebook- it just tells you to log in - rubbish

  • I have a new problem that recently appeared. When I start Strava on my Apple Watch series 2, it tells me to log into Strava on my iPhone. But, I am already logged into Strava on my phone. The only way to get past the message on my watch is to uninstall the watch app (in the Watch app on the iPhone) and then reinstall it. It then gives me the same message, but with a button at the bottom that allows the Watch app to proceed.

  • Same problem as Brian Gribb but if I log out on iPhone and then log in it shows up on my watch. A big hassle each time I want to use it.

  • When are people going to realise that Strava on the Apple Watch is just not a great option. Either buy a Garmin, use the native app or get over it 🍻👍

  • It's not about other devices being better, it's about Strava supporting the devices they claim to connect to.  I dropped my subscription because the support was lacking. I don't have any interest in buying another device.

  • Same as the last few comments, my formerly pretty reliable Apple Watch app has started asking me to set it up frequently. I’d estimate it as about once a day but I wouldn’t swear to it. As others have said, it’s a frustrating interaction when I am already logged in and the phone app says the watch is paired.

This morning it seemed to be related to me using my phone and AirPods for a call. Once I got off the call, the watch app figured it out and showed the expected UI. Maybe this was a coincidence, but I was wondering if the AirPods and watch were fighting over the Bluetooth connection?

It’s a strange bug that seems to have crept in with either an Apple or Strava update. I’d be happy to try to supply more info if that will help to troubleshoot. Have a good day!

  • Isn't it ridiculous that we have 30 pages of negative feedback on the Apple Watch app and not a single reply from Strava on this?  I take this as a sure sign that we can all whistle dixie on a solid app ever appearing.  This is just silly.  We are all wasting time posting our complaints on here.

  • In my case, AirPods were certainly not a contributing element; I don’t own any.

I wasn’t able to find how to sign out of Strava in the iPhone app, so my strategy has been to reinstall the Watch app.

  • Just thought I would pass this along for those still having problems with the Strava Apple Watch App. I had some similar and other complaints with it and finally found another app "WorkOutDoors" which allows you to customize your screens and see lots of useful data like elevation, pace, cadence, maps, routes, etc... and can also be connected to Strava so you can upload your activity after you are done. It became my favorite Apple Watch app. Hope it helps some of you.

  • I am also getting this new issue where Strava on my Watch tells me to log in on the app on my iPhone, which is already logged in.

This has issue has been present on at least the last three releases of Strava.
