New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • Just want to add, I understand the appeal of being able to use just the AW2 and leave the phone at home or in the car but that's not really an option for me. For starters, I like to listen to music or podcasts while I run but on a more practical note, I occasionally run alone and it's just not safe, in my opinion, to run alone without a phone. So I'm carrying my phone with me, whether or not I can use just my watch to record the workout.

  • To the disappointed cyclists, if you find an alternative app that fills the void this release has created, may I suggest you post it here. Show the strava team that they can't just release BS updates that alienate their user base without repercussions.

  • Afraid to say I prefer the old version: I tried this today and it all appeared to work fine until I hit save, I got the message on my iPhone saying its ready to view, but it does not appear to have recorded it!

I went back to using just the iPhone app for the afternoon and now find that it no longer picks up my HR from the watch!

  • I'm seeing cyclists very disappointed by this on a variety of message boards and social media platforms.

This really should have been a separate app as it serves almost an entirely different purpose and has so many limitations. The lack of battery life and beacon brought the safety aspect way down too.

The vast VAST majority of cyclists ride with their phone stashed in a pack or pocket. Sacrificing so much to make it a standalone watch app is pretty bizarre.

  • The updated app for AW is just shit. So many runs are not syncing and GPS just does not seems to connect. After every run, there isn't a way to view summary which makes syncing more like a gamble when connected back to phone.

  • I have been using the strava app on apple watch 2 for a couple weeks now, and had my first issue today.  I opened the app on my watch, and repeatedly tried to press the start button to no avail.  This is the first time Ive ever had issues with the strava app not starting.  Im really not sure what the issue was.  I never had to open my phone, or even have my phone with me before.

  • I am also terribly disappointed with the Apple Watch app.  I get mystery pauses and lose often large portions of my activities.  I want to just use the old style tethered version and have it gather heart rate data from the watch.  All the rest appears to be feechurs in desperate search of actual user requirements.

  • Since the last update, the start button no longer works.

  • The latest Strava Apple Watch (Series 2) lost my 35 minute trail run yesterday. Everything appeared to be OK on the watch. My iPhone was attached to my upper arm the whole time. At the end of my run, I saw the summary page on Watch with my mileage and pressed "Save". No errors and no signs of the run in my activity feed after that. Fortunately, my heart rate readings were successfully recorded in Health app. I did a few test runs after that and they were recorded. Any suggestions on how to prevent data loss?

I always take my my phone on rides and runs, so I prefer the AWS2 to just be a remote display for the phone app.

  • Seems to be broken here too. Can't press the start button. Us currently useless. Not good enough as a premium user!!

  • Ok... latest update seems better regarding distance and pace measurements (as compared to my Garmin.)

However, the stupid "Moving Time" use when the run is set as a 'run' type (go figure!) makes the distance, time and pace less than what it really was. I did a 2.55 mile run this morning with no stopping which Garmin showed a 9.49 pace for 25 minutes. Strava lists the same run as only being 2.4 miles at a 9.45 pace but only for 24.14 time duration. So the paces matched just be chance, but the duration and mileage are wide apart. If I change the Strava type to 'race', then the elapsed time is used which also corrects the mileage and then matches the Garmin almost exactly.

It's silly that moving time is used without any way of turning it off other than to list every run as a race. I see this has gotten a ton of coverage in other threads for almost 3 years! This simply cannot be that hard to make optional. If Strava isn't interested in listening to their users, then I won't re-new my premium membership (expensive anyway at $59 a year) once it expires.

Very disappointed in the lack of customer satisfaction interest. There are other options out there that seem to listen..

  • As quite a few other have said one of the major things this new app breaks is the ability to use the watch for heart rate and then also have a bluetooth cadence sensor attached to the phone.

You now have the choice of

    • start the ride from the watch and get heart rate recorded but no cadence or visibility of the workout on the phone.

    or

    • start the ride on the phone and get cadence recorded but no heart rate or visibility of the workout on the watch.

This is a big loss of functionality when the previous version of the app let you start a workout on the watch and then gave you visibility of the workout on both the watch and phone and let you record heart rate and cadence at the same time.

The ability to ride or run with just the watch on its own is a really nice feature but especially for rides when I always have my phone in my bag there really needs to be a way to connect the workouts on the watch and phone back up again so you can see your current progress on either device and can make use of the watch for heart rate and phone for connected cadence sensors at the same time.

  • Since the update my Apple Watch series 1 has communication issues with strava. Very disappointed.

  • I am not happy with the changes so far. Losing the heart rate data from the Apple Watch (cycling) on the phone app is not a good change. I use the iPhone to watch map, segment results and have heart rate up front. Lifting my wrist to see this while riding is a poor design.

Is is this something you are working on or do I need to find a different app.

  • Had just after my first bike tour ascertained that my pulse values are not deposited in the tour.

Previously, iPhone (iphone6plus) & iWatch (watch1) were synchronous!

Why did you change that???? :(

I reinstalled the APP already several times on iOS & iWatchOS - without success!!!

  • There was an update today (April 4th). It said "bug fixes".
Does anybody know what excactly was fixed?
    Thank you!

  • Premium subscription cancelled due to all the issues raised above.

Strava don't seem concerned enough to keep us as customers so it's off to Runtastic!

    Shame.

  • So after disabling key (and Premium) functionality in version 5.13, we've skipped from 5.14 to 6.0 to 7.0 with no significant fixes to what was broken? What in the world is going on over there? No interest in fixing the problems you've willingly created for so much of your user base?

  • This new app update is horrible experience for Apple Watch series 1 users. The watch does not record the same as the phone. I would rather go back to the old app. Can I download the old app? This is just strava and Apple forcing people to upgrade watches. Garmin is looking better every day.

  • Until Strava have fixed all the problems with the Watch App I have switched to the MotiFIT Run App thanks to a post I saw on here today. I tested it tonight, I was able to start and stop from the Watch, I could see all the information I needed Intesity %, HR, Pace, Distance and Time, there is also a clock face which allows you to access the App Direct, it links into your activity on AW2 and Health App on the phone and it automatically uploads your run to Strava when you have finished. The activity on Strava still shows all the segments and the premium features of HR, Suffer Score and Race Pace Zones plus it saves the run on the normal mode where you get your moving time and not as Race mode where you get total time as the Strava App does.

  • As a Watch Series 1 user, it seems like I may not be able to use Strava anymore. Yesterday, my run was forced to be discarded because it "couldn't detect a change in my location," despite showing me the information I expected to see on my run (that is: mileage matched what I expected, time was right; it wasn't at 00:00 0mi or anything). Today, I told my phone to record the run instead. Which means I couldn't see my info on my wrist, and I guess also means I don't get access to heartbeat info anymore? Audio cues, also a big thing for me, are only available on my phone, so if I go back to the watch once whatever that bug was yesterday is fixed, I'll lose that.

I get that you're trying to support the new tech, but I really wish that the paired functionality were still an option. It seems like there's no other way to get all the benefits I used to get from Strava. I have a Premium Membership, but I probably won't for much longer if this continues to be the state of things. It just doesn't … work, for me.

  • Went for a 10K run this morning.  For some reason the run hasn't uploaded from the watch to my phone.  I did another small run hoping it might push it along, but that run has appeared and the 10K run has vanished into the ether.  With no way to force re-upload the run, this has pretty much finished using the Strava app on AW2 for me.  Very annoyed.

  • I don't think you're getting how the 'average runner' would like to use Strava.

    • I bring my iPhone and earbuds with me to listen to music/podcasts while I run (it is also for security in case I or someone else needs help).
    • I use a separate cadence app when training.
    • I like audio announcements to tell me how far I've run and my current pace, so I can adjust my effort to match training goals.
    • Live segments are fun and motivating.

If I have to bring my iPhone with me for GPS data, then surely a tethering model will allow me to use my Apple Watch as a second screen to access a fully featured, premium Strava experience.

  • Hi,

I'm missing the auto laps function. E.g. after each km a lap with a taptical feedback and a short summary on the watch app.

    Is this possible?

  • Please, add second digit after decimal place in the distance reading. Instead of 1.1 mile it should show 1.11 - 1.19 etc

  • I hate this update. If there was a way to revert my app back I would. What the hell were you thinking? Apps working independently of each other is stupid. I run with my phone and run specific routes I have planned out... Now I can't do that because the phone and apple watch don't speak to each other anymore. You've made it literally pointless to have an apple watch now... I want to use my phone to use strava and my watch to monitor my heart rate but nope. you've made that impossible.

  • Open water swim.

I am confused. This morning i swam approx. 3K in the open water. The watch series 2 strava app can not choose SWIM as option (only run and ride). It tracked my swim very exact but the time used was too short (approx. 10 minutes too short) and the distance was 5.6K, which is as you see almost double.

Any idea if and how I can use the strava app on watch series 2 for an open water swim? I really like the GPS track function to see back my route in the lake.....

Thank you for updating the app soon. This would help me (and many) very much.

  • @Simon, you hit the nail on the head perfectly. It is beyond confusing. They don't care is my only conclusion.

Runkeeper has really stepped up their apple watch app since I last used it before switching to Strava. Many of my friends are still on Strava so I do like my data there. I paid 2 bucks to https://tapiriik.com/ so it will sync my runs from runkeeper to strava for my friends to view and comment on. Best of both worlds except I cancelled my premium with Strava and paid it to Runkeeper.
