Edit Activity time and distance

I know this is a long-standing issue, but I'd like to make the point for giving users the possibility of manually editing distance and time of existing activities.

I understand that the logic is that Strava does not want challenges and records to be affected. Bu this is a huge inconvenience for users who care little about challenges and records, but on the other hand, want an accurate record of their ACTUAL activities.

A possible solution would be:

a) users are allowed to edit distance and time so that their totals are accurate (and similar across platforms)

b) Challenges keep recording the original activity and not the edited one. I can leave with a month challenge underreporting my number of km. But I am annoyed by Garmin Connect and Strava giving different totals for activities.

What does support think of this?

  • So if it is just a matter of trimming the start or the finish, it looks like you can do this today in the web site.

Just select your activity, edit using the spanner, and crop at the edges.  Did what I needed to do for my run.

Now, if they would also curve fit the run to actual paths, so that random GPS noise during the run can be smoothed out,

it would be almost good enough....

  • Why is strava not allowing this essential feature? you can just read the numerous reason why this a legitimate use case. i am a new users of strava, but alas won't be for long if this feature is not implemented, I will give it another couple of months and i will go back  to my old platforms if this is not changed.

  • I put in a manual entry today. Then afterwards I realized that I had forgot to enter the total distance. Since Strava does not allow manual changes to distance I cannot correct it. Note that this was a manual entry in the first place, and with manual entries people can enter any distance when entering the activity but still cannot correct them later. If the reason for not allowing manual changes to distances is the risk that people might be cheating on entering new records, surely that is not a valid reason for manual entries. This simply makes no sense.

  • I agree with Rick.  Strava seem determined to ignore this issue so the choice is to accept it and continue, or move on to a different site for logging activity.  I've opted for the latter.

  • This is a huge issue with my times. I use a waist strap to keep my phone when I run.  And each time I finish my races, the phone is slightly wet and my hands are too sweaty & fingers dilated to unlock phone using touch ID.  therefore, by the time I get to unlock phone, there is always extra time by the time I get to end my runs.

I found this posting when I was searching for a way to edit my Strava to align it with my official times as I thought I was missing some setting.  So, yes, I would appreciate if I have the ability to edit and remove say the two minutes from each of my previous races!

I get that I can Just add a manual entry, but where is the fun in a run log that does not show your GPS route & splits???

  • Dear Strava team, as you can see from this ongoing thread, a lot of users are unhappy with the inability to edit runs. The first request was made more than 13 months ago but alas no meaningful functionality was introduced to fix this issue, i am de-activating my account.

all the best to the Strava team .

  • Why can't we manually edit distance? Think of all the indoor spinning/cycling activities that don't get distance captured? What is the logic behind lacking this functionality? Garmin Connect has it. If it has something to do with safekeeping "official" results, there are many other ways to game the system if one sets their mind to it (for example, riding in a motorized vehicle and recording it as a cycling activity).

Strava, do you not monitor and comment on popular topics?

  • My issue is with the indoor rowing activity. I track it with my Garmin Fenix5. When the activity syncs with Strava, it only shows the elapsed time and my HR for the activity but says I rowed for for 0 meters. Even if I update my distance on GarminConnect before uploading to Strava, the distance still doesn’t sync over to Strava. Why am I not able to edit the distance and input my strokes per min manually? (I don’t manually put in the activity in Strava because I want my HR data from my Garmin.)

  • Sigh. Just completed a 70+ mile ride Strava recorded as 30 miles. When I clicked "Distance(?)" it decided it was 54 miles, but I'm still missing a lot of miles. I triple confirmed it was running before I left. Sure wish I could type in the actual miles ridden.

  • Every app allows to edit activity parameters to reflect actual training data, fix GPS or device incorrect data, or simply add data not recorded by the tracking device. Every app, except Strava.

I don't believe the "records and challenges" bs... According to my Garmin I climbed 60k feet during a 1 hour run this weekend... must be a new record, did I win something?? It'll certainly amount for a big achievement at the end of the year when I see the yearly stats! That's if I still use Strava by the end of the year...

This is a major setback, in the long run I'll eventually get tired and sub Strava for other apps that allow for more accurate activity tracking and correcting technological mistakes.

  • Same here, fairly new to strava. Lost GPS today on my run and it meant some really slow km's according to the data - would love to be able to fix this issue. But the more than a year of silence on the issue doesn't bode well I gues...

  • Just ran a Officially marked 10K.

I was able to edit time (forgot to shut off watch) and distance (Fenix 5X had the distance at 6.17 miles) on Garmin Connect

This should not be hard!  If people are going to cheat, then let them.  I want my stuff to be accurate!

  • I totally agree and wonder why strava has not allowed this yet. I run 10k races several times a month and it always records it as 10.3-10.5km. The longer the distance, the greater the inconsistency. My last half was off by over 1km. I have emailed them and their trouble shooting has not been helpful.

  • I did a 16 hour hike yesterday. My Garmin battery dies after about 7 hours, so most of the day's distance isn't captured.  Sure would be nice to be able to edit distance.

  • I'm going to Runkeeper because of this.  Apple Watch died halfway through 70 mile bike ride, and half my ride is gone.  I'd like to edit the map to show what I did.  What's the point of premium?  I'm finding lots of GPS errors on my trips.  Bye Strava...

  • Keep in mind that entering a manual distance & time will change your total time and therefor affect you average speed.

So if you ride 30k in one hour indoor and add a manual distance and time, it will cut it in half.

  • Why would it cut it in haIf?

If I ride a 30K in one hour indoor... and add an additional 30K in one more hour after the watch battery died... would I not have 60K in two hours and the same average speed?  Garmin Connect is smart enough to figure it out.

We are talking times when you run an official 5K but GPS is off slightly and you run 4.95K and Strava does not allow you to change it to 5K.  Or perhaps you forgot to turn your watch off at the official time is 19:45, but Strava thinks you ran it in 20:30.

  • I agree.  I just ran 9 miles on my treadmill.  My Garmin was basing the distance on my damn arm swing and nothing else.  Garmin lets me calibrate my watch prior to saving the workout and uploading to Strava and it still listed it at 8.4.  WTF!?  It's not like I'm setting a world record on my damn treadmill.  I just want it to reflect what I actually ran.  The totals mean something to me!  I've been running since 1989 for F*ck's Sake!!!  I want my totals correct!!!  Let us edit the damn distance!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I forgot to stop Strava between ride segments interrupted by a distance in the car and now I'm beating all records on the 8% grade between ....... would love to be able to delete that section so that I can see the correct mileage, time, avg speed and power, etc.  :-(

  • Auto-pause got stuck so my 5.5 mile run ended up only recording one mile.  It seems reasonable that I should be able to go in and quickly edit this like in mapmyrun.  Someone here said that adding this feature would be a support nightmare for Strava.  I contest that point highly as utter silliness.  THIS thread seems to be a support issue as there are many clamoring for this ability available in competing applications.

  • I ran a race yesterday and not only is the distance off but the pace and finish time are as well.  I'd really appreciate the option to adjust the time to match the finisher results.  The time in my auto entry is off by more than 40 minutes.

  • Yeah I want to edit my last ride.  I stopped at my half way point and manually paused the app (sometimes auto pause freaks out and adds a bunch of time when I'm sitting on a bench eating a snack).  I forgot to resume on the ride back, so it only recorded half my ride.  Yeah, I could delete it and manually add one, but that's dumb.

  • Today I run on the treadmill for 36 minutes but forgot to set my garmin watch to indoor running. I am now unable to edit my run to show that I actually covered 5.24km with a pace of 6.45 km/min Strava shows 0.6 miles with a pace of 55:20. Surely this would be an instance where editing a run would be accepted.

  • I am in agreement with everyone who is in favor of being able to edit distance and time.  This discussion goes back several years!  I am very surprised that something has not been done to correct this yet.  I wonder how many users of Strava have changed to another program just because of this issue?

  • @Jerry Bell, Strava was always sort of a back up for me anyway.  Garmin is my preferred method of recording my activities and logging my miles.

  • I would consider "paying" for other Strave features over what Garmin Connect gives you if they allowed you to "fix" distant and time due to human or GPS mistakes.

  • This is so frustrating. It would be nice to edit an indoor spin class with mileage. Why is this not doable? I don't want to delete my Garmin data and do a manual entry every single time I do a Spin workout. Ugh. This seems to defeat one of the purposes of Strava - easily keeping track of your workout data.
