Apple Watch untethered app

Received the updated Strava App for Apple WatchOS the other week and am having a few problems. I understand it's work in progress but my Strava experience is now worst than before.

1. Highlighting a release as "bug fixes" does not allow you to release a whole new WatchOS app with new UI and new behaviour. Put it in the release notes please.

2. I no longer receive any alerts on my run, I'm used to getting split announcements every K. Voice may not be possible but some kind of haptic feedback or sound surely.

3. I more often than not run with my phone, but the app no longer tethers with the phone. Please give us the option to tether, at least we get feedback on the run the.

4. There was absolutely no indication that the app now supported untethered running, I just decided to give it a go one day. See point 1

5. The GPS coordinates are being reported incorrectly, they start being tracked from when I open the app not when I click start, this results in a ridiculously quick first segment and my entire run stats being off, I have to crop the run in the web interface afterwards.

Its a nice start but needs improvement and fixes.

  • Agree with the above. With a Series 1 watch Strava was my preferred app to use, but since the update I have had to switch to another app to track my runs. It no longer tethers with my phone correctly. Will this option for Apple watches that don't have GPS and won't be used untethered?

  • I have the Series 2 and I find the app misses off the first part of my runs. Its like its still connected to my phone gps when I set off and takes it a while to work out I have left my phone behind.

  • Finally got some release notes for the app but other problems still persist.

Didn't realise Series 1 watches got the same release, that really sucks.

  • I have yet to take the watch out without the iPhone ( untethered ). But have had multiple upload errors, consequently entire runs are lost.

Strava appears to be over ridden  by Apple activities cycling.  Resulting lost data to Strava website.

Strava is using excessively large amounts of cellular data.

  • Andrew, I have a problem with the GPS as well, have to crop my run afterwards to get the right start point but wondering that it does to my PR's as it calculates my pace and splits prior to the crop. I managed a sub 5 min 1K according to Strava but it was nowhere near that,

another thing occurred to me today. I'm a Strava premium subscriber and one of the reasons for that was to use the beacon when I go on trail runs. That doesn't work anymore as beacon has to be triggered from phone and without tethering it won't work.

  • Yes! Bring back tethering between my Apple Watch Series 1 and my iPhone. It seems I can either use the iPhone app and receive audio cues for announcements and live segments, but I can't log heart rate data. Alternatively, I can use the Apple Watch app to log heart rate data and upload my run later, but not receive audio cues.  I Want audio cues and heart rate data.

My premium membership is not feeling all that premium right now.

  • I used Strava app (first time user) on Apple Watch(1st release) for my 12 miles run but Strava shows 14.7 miles with pace far exceeding my actual pace. This seems related to Watch app not synching with my GPS on iPhone 7 with me.

Hope this gets fixed soon before I abandon my love for Strava!

  • I have the same problems with my Apple Watch (Series 1). Any solutions, Stava?

  • I'm having the same tethering issues with an Apple Watch Series 2. It seems the Strava devs went whole hog with "separate apps" so you could workout untethered, but forgot to carry over the functionality originally present for tethered use.

Case in point: I have my phone attached to my bike with a mount so I can see the readouts as I ride, but I can only get heart rate data if I start the activity from my watch--which then means the iOS app acts like nothing is happening. It's absurd. I don't *want* to work out untethered, I just want my heart rate to be shared from my apple watch and for it to be visible in the iOS app.

This is probably the sort of thing that should have been tested before release--if your devs had asked people, I'm guessing they would have told them that they wanted the watch to be able to communicate with the iOS app.

  • Same Apple Watch Series 1 issues. There was no info stating this when I downloaded the App Upgrade. Just want to go back to the previous version. Very frustrating as this was my app of choice. Will be moving on very soon if this is not fixed.

  • my experience with the new iwatch app for series 2.  Overall, great improvement from the prior old version.  However, the first release (of the new untehered version) had my time significantly faster (distance is measured shorter than reality), after an update today that introduced using pedometer data I have the reverse issue with slower times (distance is measured longer than reality .  when using with an iphone (tethered) all is a-ok with distances and speed.

  • I am glad to report my issue reported above (on 3/20/17 11:26 PST) got fixed.

Please see details as on my update on https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000103390-Apple-watch-s2-start-button?page=1#community_comment_115000165624 .

  • So it is tracking a more accurate distance now?

  • We need proper solutions for the series 1 watch. My watch app no longer records anything after weeks of connectivity drop outs & inaccurate stats. I'm not feeling very premium right now & other apps may now be better suited for me.

  • Not noticed much difference with the latest update but I don't monitor my pace too closely and my understanding of including the pedometer details is to increase the accuracy of the pace.

Still no announcement or haptic feedback on splits.

  • The best way at the moment seems ot be to use runkeeper and then if you want it on strava just import afterwards - Not really the ideal solution!!

  • Using my series 1 Apple Watch tethered to iPhone 6s, Strava is failing to record the return leg of my rides (which often cover the same segments) since the most recent update.  This results in the recorded ride being about 50% what it should be. I love strava but that is a big fail!

  • Had just after my first bike tour ascertained that my pulse values are not deposited in the tour.

Previously, iPhone (iphone6plus) & iWatch (watch1) were synchronous!

Why did you change that???? :(

I reinstalled the APP already several times on iOS & iWatchOS - without success!!!
