Option to remove bad power data points

So I just started riding with a power meter and I love it! but out of the 7 rides I've done 2 have bad data.  my Garmin somehow recorded me spinning at 175rpm and 2,000+ watts on one ride and something similar on the other this really messes up my power curve (i'm using a stages power meter). with 2/7 rides being affected I'd rather not delete the power record for those entire rides which would be one solution. is there a way to check my data for extraneous points like this and have the offenders removed from my GPX file? like, say I believe my max power to be 1300 watts so if any data says 1500+ remove it or flag those seconds for optional manual removal?

  • Yes please, let us fix bad power spike data! At least 4 other posts about this in forums from users wanting this feature.

  • Sadly don’t think Strava has any intentions to help with this. There is an online app you can use, and you can support the developer as well.

  • I have made the same request about power spikes.

  • If you use a Garmin to track your rides, I’ve found this utility to be helpful and fairly easy to use.

  • Same issue with my power meter.. 2000 watt peaks   my max is around 800w  so anything above the 800 mark should be smooothed out.

    Good post

  • +1 on the ability to sort out bad data points/spikes.

Unfortunately, fitfiletools doesn't always work (I have a couple of rides with power spikes that FFT just doesn't seem to care about - tried removing power above certain threshold values, and also tried 'cutting out' the offending section of data to no avail. :-(

Strava already allows us to trim/crop ride data, shouldn't be that difficult to add the ability to 'cap' power and/or heart rate data...

Really messes up my historical power curve. :-(

  • Still surprised this isn't an option.

I thought i'd got away with it this year, but got caught out today on the exact same part of terrible road as last year and as others have said, it now screws all the training data when you compare year on year.

    23mph freewheeling i have a spike of 219rpm and 2324watts.

  • +1 for removing power (and any other data that might screw up or be preferentially private) from ride data.

Surely Strava, you realise that almost any user with a power meter will have erroneous data at some point, whether they write to you about it or not. For high readings, this means messed up PB's. The only thing to do is to delete the file, which means messed up Fitness & Freshness. Come oooon......

  • Strava ..please, this is a must tool to have.  Some error readings from any device are inevitable.

  • And if you’re worried about cheating, allow only the option to edit to a lower power.

That’s a thought, don’t you care about erroneous files stealing bona fida thunder from others??

18 months since the first post in thread....

  • The importance of filtering high power spikes is in the power curve graph: it becomes flat and nearly unreadable with the scale to fit the high values given by the erroneous data.

  • yes, please create a way to fix power data spikes.  TrainingPeaks seems to ignore power spikes of 1 second so it doesnt mess up my power curve there.  Becoming less of a reason to pay for Strava.

  • I will add my voice to the chorus, fix this. Allow corrupt or inaccurate power data from a ride to be removed from the power curve.

  • In case anyone didn’t spot it, a workaround is the split ride feature. Select from ride start up to the error and from after the error to ride finish. You lose a minimum amount of data and retain all your totals, losing only the record of the ride, which hopefully wasn’t your PB distance, so you don’t really care....
    Ride on.
    Ah, wrong app 😁👍

  • I had these issues happened before, use to split and crop. Trying to fix one today, got a super easy fix.

1- Upload activity to Strava and remember what is the max power (the error point).

    2- download GPX from strava.

    3- delete activity from strava

3- open in text editor (Text Editor on MAC, Note Pad on windows. Word won't work).

4- command + F  in MAC (or control + F in windows) will open the FIND function and you can type the number of the max power. this will find the data point for the peak. substitute with 0 (usually the value for the data point(s) before and after since it was an error peak).

5-either save it as is or with new name, it has to be .gpx

6- do a manual upload and select this modified file.

    Everything should work nicely!

STRAVA please add a function so we can delete errors on the app/website!

  • Yes please, allow users to edit wrong data, sometimes when a car pass nearby my heart rate goes to the max (240bpm), very annoying, I'll not pay premium features until this problem is fixed.

  • Just look at how long people have been asking for this and Stava did nothing about it. Almost a year ago I decided to quit paying for strava for this single reason (The suggestion by Roberto works but who has time to do that, some power meter create this problem often). One can correct power peaks in the open-source Golden Cheetah quite easily. Unfortunately, Strava had me on a year plan so I am still in.

  • Absolutely ridiculous that Strava will just not react at all on a simple request like this!

Time to reconsider my premium account. Better spend the money on trainingpeaks.

  • Latest post from Strava still has you going to Fit Tools to fix the file and then re-importing.  This needs to be done within Strava.  Yet they roll out useless upgrades today.  I don't need auto flagging when I accidentally drive off after a ride with the computer still going! That I can figure out myself.  Much rather be able to fix bad power data.
