Inaccurate heartbeat display

Hi Strava

I have now ride and runs a few sessions with the upgraded app on my apple watch. By all sessions the display from my heart rate was not accurate displayed in my activities. See the screenshots from 2 sessions beneath. The first screenshot is from a session with only the apple watch app and the second screenshot from a session with the iPhone App in combination with the heart rate sensor from the apple watch. By the first session it look like the hartbeat data is not frequently updated. Is this a known issue?

  • I have also had similar issues to this, but I am starting to wonder whether this is hardware related as if I record runs using Runkeeper, I have similar behaviour.

This leads me to believe that we have one of two possible issues:

    a) A batch of Apple Watch Series 2 have bad HR sensors

    OR

    b) The API that both Runkeeper and Strava call often gives poor or no data

It's also worth nothing that I often have runs where the first approx 0.5 km is not captured, and I suspect this again is down to the HR sensor as I suspect that if you have no HR data at the beginning of a run, no GPS data is generated either.

At the end of the day, I suspect this will require a fix from Apple, whether it be hardware or something with their API.

  • I should add that I have sent in my AW2 in for servicing. Will see how Apple get on, and if I see the same behaviour afterwards, I think it is safe to say that we need to push for Strava and Runkeeper to fight with Apple about how unreliable their API calls are, as it would suggest that this is a software rather than hardware issue. Apple sadly won't deal with us end-users on an issue like this.

  • Since the last update I have the same problem as Nicola. The heartbeat monitor in the app is very often grey and does not show the heartbeat. Where I was used that I was able to read the heartbeat at any given moment.

When I analyse the heartbeat after saving in Strava, I see that there are longer periods of times with a straight line. Meaning that the heartbeat is not measured for a longer time.

    How can I solve this?

  • Same problem here. Horrible hr monitoring. How come Strava hasn't responded to this issue at all? I have read many threads. Everyone is saying the same thing.

  • After I updated Strava, i got the same problem. Before update my strava UI was still black (quite old version) but it worked well.

  • Having the same issue... My HR monitor is often grey in Strava and the HR summary looks like it is missing long periods of readings.  When I check my Health App, there are readings every couple of minutes that should be reflected in Strava but are not.  Also, HR monitoring works fine in MapMyRun which leads me to believe there is something buggy with Strava.

  • My data looked just like that.  I found a solution to my problem. My watch was recording flat stepped lines rather than the nice heart rate data I got previously from my Garmin chest band. I realized one hot sweaty day that I had better data. My problem was a result of poor contact with my wrist. I purchased an elastic Velcro band, keep my wrist shaved short, and on cold days ( when I wont be sweating much) apply a thin layer of Vaseline to my wrist (and hands because they will probably dry out anyway). I now get great hear rate data. Its all about maximizing light transmittance to and from the sensor.  I hope this helps somebody.
