Add spinning to activities list

I have been supplementing road cycling with spin cycling sessions.

I track the sessions with my Garmin Vivofit HR which uploads to Garmin Connect and then to Strava.

There's no obvious choice of activity type and by selecting workout the heart rate data is lost in Strava.

Spin cycling is THE in exercise class so how can it be missing?

This doesn't seem like a complex update, should be a no brainier!

  • Think this would be a brilliant new feature to add to Strava,I go spinning 2 to 3 times a week whilst I'm away at university and can't get out on my bike. This would also be helpful during the winter months, due to spinning being a popular activity amongst cyclists over the colder period.

  • Erm...I do this all the time. Just add a bike to your gear as "spin bike". The spin bikes i do have an app that records heart rate power etc. I just upload the tcx to strava

  • Thanks for the suggestion, however the spin bikes at our gym are very basic, no fancy power meters heart rate or cadence monitoring.

Since I already have VivoSmart HR which tracks the spin session and activity is automatically transferred from Garmin Connect to Strava it would be great to have a "Spin Cycling" activity with HR data in Strava.

It seems odd that the activity list includes such eclectic activities as "Nordic Ski" and "Snow Shoe" that something as popular as Spin Cycling is missing.

I'm sure there are some workarounds but I'm a fee paying customer and it doesn't seem like a big ask.

  • Why do you need a separate activity for this? You can select "Ride" and then "Trainer" tag that stands for all indoor cycle activities.

  • Interesting Roman, I managed to do this on the website from my PC. I set the activity as Ride/Workout and set the "Indoor Trainer" tag. Great, this solves the problem as far as I am concerned.

    However:-

The "Indoor Trainer" tag is not available in the Android app for some reason. The only tag the android app offers (me at least) is a "Commute" tag. To edit the

Please include the "Indoor Trainer" tag in the Android app so that spin activities can be setup without having to go to web browser!

  • I agree this is not logical and a no brainier update. My cardio gym activities is mostly spinning cycle or elliptical trainer.

Elliptical trainer is a choice as activity and can be saved with heart rate if recorded. For the spinning bike i chose bike ride and tag it as workout and indoor cycling. But first I must create spinning cycle in my gear to not count biking hour on other bikes. It seems just strange to complicate it that way.

It also shows as training hour in the training log but my elliptical training are not counted and shows just as an XT tag in the training log. I don't understand the idea with the difference it is handled.

  • To recorda spin class do you need to have the premium membership? As I can't find the ride and trainer tag.

  • There is no trainer tag and you cannot add a bike to gear because Strava has certain fields you have to use. I do not see any of the above suggestions to work. Strava is lame. Nordic skiing and snow showing...really?!? We can definitely tell Strava is geared to USA use. So stupid. Of course Strava doesn’t actually read any forum posts so it doesn’t really matter.

  • Please add indoor spin with the ability to record heart rate (for both Android and iPhone)! Thank you!

  • Definitely need this added for the app - shouldn't have to go through multiple steps for a spin class when other mundane options used by few users are readily available on Strava.  Why not spin class?  Other fitness apps have it.

  • Exactly right! It is not possible to use the Strava App to upload your session, although it is possible to record it. This issue has been raised since 2012!!!
Just 2 days ago, Strava recommended to use an Apple Watch for stationary sessions....
The Strava App should provide a basic feature like stationary training. And that should not take 6 years to be discussed. Just do it!

  • My cycling distance travelled is decreasing, because I'm attending spin bike sessions during the week, instead of riding outside. This means Strava is giving me a false picture of my fitness and achievements.

I'm not impressed, as a fee-paying customer, that there is:

    • no acknowledgement from Strava people of this issue, and
    • no indication of when or if the feature (requested by multiple people over many years) is included in any future plans

  • Can anyone recommend brands/models of spin bikes that are capable of syncing with Strava?

  • I’m having same issue. I joined strava for all things riding and spinning is a major component and supplement to my outdoor rides. It’s unebelievable that I can add a yoga workout or elliptical or even kayaking but not a spin bike. Totally strange oversight especially if you have cadence and heart rate monitoring. Hope they fix this soon because it is piss poor to not support spin bikes, especially when paying a monthly fee. It actually has me looking for a different platform to monitor my workouts.

  • Spin bike really needs to be added!

  • You could just add a manual workout and call it a “workout” and in the title type “spin class.”
