Strava has decided to stop anyone from making short segments...

This is because the accuracy is not as good with short segments, I can understand this and have experienced short segments that don't record correctly. But my cycling is mostly hilly rides and I make a lot of segments that are steep and take me from 1 to 2 minutes. Now I can't make them any more, even though they aren't short in reality due to the elevation. I tried to make one earlier, it was 13.1% offroad and it definitely wasn't short, took me: 1min 41seconds.. but there was a message saying 'segment too short'. I've written to Strava about it, and they say that not enough people have also written in to say that they would prefer to be able to make short segments again.

I asked if they could use a calculation to include the elevation so that it would be fair for everyone. Or an option for shorter segments, only if you choose for it to be 'private'. But unless more people want to have the option to be able to make short segments again (like we always have been able to do), they said that they won't be changing it back.

With uphill segments that take from 1min to 1min 50sec, when it's steep/uphill the accuracy always seems very good. I can still work out my times by using the analysis page, then measure it myself like I have in this pic, then I'd need to make a note of it to add to my ride, make a file and record all the times myself, bit of a pain.

Here is the segment I tried to make..

Thanks for bringing this topic up. I understand that any segment length restrictions should take the segment gradient into account. Also, please note a related discussion over at Segment too short? Please continue leaving your comments and votes and I'll see what we can do on our end.

  • I can't either make a segment (offroad), the segment is 1-2 minutes long!

  •  I've sent in a request for this.

very annoying... As you point out, some short segments are definitely valid. And some "silly" ones are still an exciting challenge - such as a 100m downhill one over a motorway bridge before a 90' left hand bend. Best time 3s, mine 4s. Or, more accurately, 3.x s and 4.x s. WOudl be nice to know what those Xs are! ;-)

  • Same thing here. Also tryed to make 2 nice segments. on a technical part. now i put a road before it in the segment. But that part is a big influance tot the whole segment. so not the technical part makes the difference. wrong way around.

Where can we make a request for it or tell strava about it?

  • Yeah I agree

Currently trying to make a knarly enduro segment which is 230meters long and roughly takes 1.30 mins.

I notice on the 'Create Segment' page, it says not to try and make segments which are under 60 seconds...

This segment I'm trying to make is quite a bit over that limit.

Please bring back the short segment option ...

  • Agree on the move to not allow short segments, it is extremely annoying those 30s on-road segments that people create.

But, on the other hand, the way it was implemented (based on distance, not on average time) doesn't look right. For off-road segments you can have a 300m stretch that will take more than a minute, this will bring the errors in GPS reading way off the table and the ranking will make sense.

So, my vote is to have a better implementation of this logic, considering other aspects before saying "you can't create this segment".

  • Yep it's completely ruined the use of strava on short gnarly off road segments spent an afternoon digging on some super steep tech which would be well over 1.30min long for strava to say it's to short would of liked to put it on strava for other local riders to find!

  • Yes, I have. I have tried several times today (Wed Feb 7th) and when I click on create segment it just routes me back to the dashboard and rides.. Same happens if I click on the tool icon.. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

  • Ridiculous move by Strava, just found this out. I want to create a 400 uphill run section, can't do it. Segment takes around 100 seconds on a proper speed. Bring it back, especially for running segments!

Edit: my run reverted back to a ride, causing this issue. Solved!

  • Trying to create a segment thats 170m long, averages 18% and takes around 2:30min. Nope.

No way of lengthening it as then it's not a climb anymore.

  • It's extremely annoying =( Such a ridiculous reason. When I care about precise measurements I choose other tools than Strava. BUT Strava is great in all other occasions. When training I'm perfectly happy give or take a few seconds. Please, stop bullying.

  • Anytime I try to create a segment i'm also sent back to the dashboard with the comment "No tienes permiso para acceder a esta página.".

I've sent some requests to Strava support without any answer and I've cannot find any public explanation about this common problem.

  • Agreed, this needs to be fixed.

I create a lot of "Zwift Insider verified" segments for Zwift riders, and the new Alpe du Zwift has 21 switchbacks. Trying to create segments between each bend, but there are a few getting rejected due to length.

They may be short, but they're uphill and take at least 1-2 minutes to complete. Strava really needs to figure elevation into their metric.

  • Crappy move. Tried to create a 200m segment representing a "surprise" climb after a downhill portion of my ride, no luck. Why is Strava messing with things that worked fine? Bring this function back!

  • And the segment takes more than 2 minutes to complete.

    For me anyway.

  • Well... according to post at top, Strava havent done anything about this becouse people havent contacted them... so...

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us

    Lets get it on :-)

Dont care about the remove of public segments... but why cant I be allowed to make a short private segment with only my own times, or with the strava members I wish to add (club ride) to compare efforts and my own progress. This really takes just about all the fun out af strava as a MTB rider. I dont care about my time on a 4 km strech of track. I need to now if I was faster up the hill, or faster down through the forrest section etc etc etc.

  • Well if it's the rule now, then why keep old short-segments? It makes all those old short-segment KOMs irrelevant now. I suggest Strava delete all old short-segments as well for consistency and fairness.

  • Fairness to whom?

  • Totally agree! AT LEAST give us some more info about your requirements to be able to create new segments, so we know how to work around it in the woods. It's not enough saying "at least a few hundred meters..".
If I know how long my segments has to be when creating them I can at least extend them according to your specifications. Even tough it would problably ruin the joy of quite a few when just putting uninteresting meters in the beginning or end. I totally understand why this is a good idea for Roadies, but for MTBrs this kinda undermines the fun with Strava.

  • @fran fairness to those that want to create a similar segment but slightly more accurate or in-par with the proper terrain, instead of short segments that no one can beat because the KOM was achieved in an unusual pattern. Unless I can sit over that segment almost 99% of the way, the segment does not even register! I had a small segment near my place that I had a KOM for years, and some douch beat me, but I beat him in another ride. Strava did not register my ride because it was more than 15% (not sure) of the original segment's positioning. So luckily I own that segment, deleted it and recreated it again but longer - so  more hard work. #booohoo #whocares #crymeariver

  • All the old short segments that were made before strava decided new ones would be banned, are all I have left Fandango 68.

The fun of making up any new segments have been taken away from me and seems to have coincided with me losing interest in training.

I'm hoping to get some motivation back soon and get some rides in soon, and at least I have some old short segments that I made up years ago so that my rides are interesting.

What sense at all would there be to take away all short segments, Strava has already destroyed an excellent system and made no attempt to be fair to offroad and mtb cyclists.

I used to be exited to work out new segments on my offroad very hilly rides. Would really look forward to them. I go where hardly anyone else cycles, so my segments interfere with no one at all. For all of Strava's reasons why short segments should be stopped, I was just an innocent victim of the consequences of that decision.

Why don't they give an option to make short segments for private rides, then at least I could put my rides private and have the fun of making new segments back...

  • I can’t even create a segment for a 5k race! I just keep getting “sorry you are not allowed to access that page”. So frustrating! Please fix this @strava !!!

  • I've got a friend who's having the same issue.  Going to any activity page and then hitting "Create Segment" either from the wrench icon or from the segment list at the bottom of the page shows them the "Sorry you are not allowed to access that page" error.  They're a relatively new user on a Strava Premium trial account, not sure if that has anything to do with it.
