Record Apple Watch HR with iPhone app

I like the new standalone app for the Apple Watch series 2 but the GPS signal is not as good as the iPhone.

While biking in the mountains the watch loses the signal.

I would like to use the iPhone as GPS and use the Apple Watch for the heart rate.

Is this possible?

  • I've stopped my Strava Premium subscription because of this issue.

... and just to be clear. This used to work, before the Apple Watch 2, the iphone and watch worked together. Strava do have the skills to fix this, they just chose to implement a running friendly app over a cycling friendly app!!!

I no longer care if this gets fixed in the future, I do not intend to pay for Strava again!

    Have fun y'all

  • So just so everyone knows, when they first updated the app and we all lost the ability to use the watch for HR measurement while using the phone for the rest I contacted tech support and they responded.  I asked them why they couldn't just allow us to install the older version that worked flawlessly and this was their response.

Hi Paul, I wish it was possible. But Apple doesn't allow previous versions of the app to be available.

So Apple does make this difficult but not impossible.  They could post the older version as a different app (i.e. Strava for cyclists), but it probably costs money.  Can't imagine as much as they are losing from all of the lost premium users but their loss.

  • The original post was 7 months ago and the “Official comment” this month is “we hear you but don’t care right now”?! Really? I am new to cycling and Strava and just upgraded today in hopes of trying out premium for the month and getting to see the work I’m putting in, INCLUDING HR...only to wish I had found this post first.

So disappointed in Strava’s lack of concern and priorities to make an app that works great on our devices. Looks like I’m on the hunt for a better cycling app! 🙄

  • Agree with the other comments, disappointing Strava can’t take HR data from the watch when the activity is recorded elsewhere such as iPhone or Garmin? Can’t be an issue with Apple restricting it if all other sports tracking apps can manage it?

  • Lol at the answers on here from Strava.  And you want me to pay *how much* for premium Strava when it can't even properly record heart rate data from my watch?  Lol at your priorities Strava.  I will not be continuing with premium after the free trial.  Thanks but no thanks.

  • I thought I I had something configured improperly when I noticed A) a started recording on one device wasn't reflected automatically on the tethered device (between apple watch and phone), AND B) No HR information was showing up in Strava.

Then I find this thread and, to my dismay, discover that this is actually a limitation of 'the best cycling app out there'. In 2018, this is pretty unfathomable. I'll be canceling my premium trial.

  • I was extremely frustrated that this feature would not work for me and stumbled across this forum after the suggested troubleshooting steps failed. Even reinstalling both apps several times. I resorted to trying the built in workout app and even this would not record my HR. I figured there must be some privacy setting I'm missing but everything appeared to be in order. Rebooted several times. I tried several other running apps with same result. The HR app itself on the watch worked so I ruled out a faulty watch. I was about to reinstall everything until I stumbled across this setting described in 3rd bulleted item here in Apple's answer:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7853330

    • "On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > turn off Workout Power Saving Mode."

Didn't even know this setting existed but sure enough HR started working again in Strava. The description of this setting is:

"Turn off the built-in heart rate sensor during walking and running workouts to extend battery life. Calculations for energy burned in some workouts may be less accurate. Bluetooth-connected heart rate monitors are not affected."

This setting may have been suggested in other forum posts but I missed it if it was. Wouldn't hurt to double check your Watch app settings and make sure this is turned off. Hope this helps at least someone who missed this setting as well.

  • I have an update today (36.0.0) and in the notes it states that ‘with this version, you can now record heart rate and time for your workouts with your Apple Watch’

Does this mean they’ve finally listenend and fixed this issue?

  • The main reasons for me to use a premium account will/would be to use the strava app mounted on my bike (with all other advantages) together with:

    - external cadence sensor (currently possible with premium account)

    - my apple watch to get the heartrate from it (don't want to use other external utility for that)

If it is not possible to use the apple watch as external heart rate device for the iphone-app i will not uses a premium account (maybe i switch to Cyclemeter GPS then).

  • Strava:

As has been asked above -

Why can't you just release a separate app that works like the old version and allows HR data to be used from the phone app live?  It used to do it.

Release a separate app or provide a real reason why that isn't possible.

  • Just adding my voice in the hopes that Strava will focus on this more:

    - I prefer to use Strava on my iPhone when cycling because of the better GPS and large screen/display.

    - I'd like to use the HR monitor on my Apple Watch connected to the Strava app on the iPhone!

    Hopefully this gets addressed soon.

    Regards

  • LET ME REPEAT ! AND YES I AM NOT JUST SHOUTING I AM

    S C R E A M I N G

Strava had an app that worked with the Watch in the way that many of us preferred to the current app.

Strava no longer has that app.

WE ARE VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS

So why not make another app that interacts with the watch? I mean how hard is this?

Or are you just trying to build up "features" in hopes of selling Strava not to is users but to another company?

    Dingdingding we have a winner.

  • Exciting news everyone! (sort of...)

Last Saturday I went for a ride. iPhoneX in Quadlock/Apple Watch on.

Started the ride on the phone and realised that all of a sudden it was displaying my heartrate, which was obvs sourced from my watch as I don't own another HR.

The one issue: suddenly the phone wasn't able to show speed or distance. Both staying at "0.0". (although in map mode the blue line was showing my track.)

When I stopped laughing at the irony - i realised as much as i'd love to have HR, getting speed and distance obviously trumps it. So I unticked Bluetooth and Heartrate in connected devices and restarted the app... and it was back to normal.

So... perhaps Strava IS actually working away at this and trying to get it right. If so... keep cracking away! Has anyone else noticed this? Any luck getting it all to work?

Attached is a screenshot of the connection in the 'Devices' pageshowing that connection. Haven't been able to get it connected again...

  • I also want to add to the comment count here just to +1 … other apps are doing this, it is clearly a prioritization issue more than a technical one.

Riding with only the Watch as per https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000244004-Apple-Watch-app-with-cadence-sensor- would be great, but because the iPhone has a better GPS it would probably be best to ensure HR on the iPhone app first.

And, of course, we should already have the stopgap of merging the data post-ride! This is truly trivial: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208835077-Add-feature-to-Merge-recordings-into-one-Strava-Activity

  • Ok, since Strava just ignores the issue. Does anyone have a “Strava alternative”? Or are we stuck with these junk non communicative apps?

I like the feature strava offers, just don’t want to have to pick between the beacon or heart rate... cus this is getting ridiculous. Every update since I got my AW2 I have checked to see if they got their act together... but disappointed every time. :(

  • I told my wife that I cannot use the Beacon feature because I also want to record my heart rate.  She is disappointed which translates into my disappointment as well.  I have an Apple Watch gen 1 and an iPhone X.  What are my options to get both features?  Procure a different hear rate monitor?

  • As a premium subscriber, this is getting really frustrating. Every other major running app allows you to record your heart rate while using your iPhone. I even have 2 apps on my phone that use this for sleep monitoring! The BeachBody app even send your heart rate from your AppleWatch to your iPhone and then displays it on your AppleTV!  As much as I like the social aspects of Strava, the app simply just isn't keeping up with the competition, and in most cases, is 5 years behind.

  • UARecord has this problem solved by having the watch and the phone communicate during an activity. I don’t understand why this is hard for Strava. It’s sad because the Strava phone app is far better in my mind than the UA app.

  • This is really annoying. Seems there are many users with this problem. Any word if there is a solution on the horizon?

  • In agree that I’d like the same - iphone for gps and other sensors and to have my apple watch gather my heart rate. Worse is that strava did that a while back...

i’m suspecting that the answers we are getting are because of the support they added for apple watch 3 lte which was all about not needing to have a iphone with you at all. That would explain why the two apps (watch and iphone) are completely independent of each other.

looking yesterday - i saw cyclemeter does what I want and exports to strava. I’m going to try that direction and see how it works. Hoping strava gives us an option that we want soon.

  • Please enable Live Heart Rate on the iPhone app paired with Apple Watch.

  • This is disappointing.  What is the value of a premium subscription without HR integration.

Yesterday I started both iphone and watch rides at same time...hoping they would integrate.  I believe I ended up with two activities but at least I got to see my HR analysis.  I need to use the iphone on my bars for during ride data.

Absolutely need the watch to be able to be a HR for the iphone app.  I may discontinue the premium until this works.

  • I also found this post whilst trying to work out why I can get HR but only if I start the recording from my Watch, when what I want to do is start the recording from my phone (so I can see speed/distance/segments whilst cycling), but also for my HR to be recorded.

    Please prioritise this fix.

  • After much searching I found this forum and totally couldn’t believe it.
I bought the AW2 as I don’t like the chest strap monitors and have had nearly a year off exercise. I can’t believe this no longer works.

I think I will also be cancelling my premium and going back to another software.

    Seriously pathetic strava.

  • Wow - over a year to fix a pretty elementary need (using the iPhone app while picking up HR data from the apple watch). Got to wonder how decisions are being made at Strava. Listening to customers doesn’t seem to be one of them.

  • Want to add to the comments.

This feature to record my cycling workout with the phone mounted on my bars (for obvious Speed/Distance available without having to flick my wrist to look at a watch... and possibly crash) using the watch simply as as the heartrate sensor, plus the GPS in the phone, plus my Bluetooth cadence sensor, IS A Necessity for this app.  Please Strava, contact the developers at Zwift. The Zwift companion app aggregates all the data from Apple Watch HeartRate, Bluetooth cadence, plus power meter from the trainer. All in one App, and feeds it to the Zwift application running on my PC!

They have done it. I'm sure you can too.

  • I upgraded to premium hoping to see heart rate data from my Apple Watch 2 while recording runs on my phone, could not get it to work, deleted and reinstalled and deleted and reinstalled and eventually arrived here to find that this simple feature is not possible. Surely I should be able to start a run on my phone and then the two devices speak to each other so that I can see splits and distance on my watch, and my phone records heart rate?

  • Forget Strava on your Apple watch, reduce from  premium to basic and use run gap on iPhone to import activities to Strava and Endomondo.

Use Apple warch's built in app for running.

  • Lots of complaining here and I agree. What you can do though is to start the bike trip on both AW2 and iPhone simultaneously. After finishing the ride you will have two records of the same ride, just like Jim Smithson says above. Then login to Strava on the computer and delete the ride without the HR measurement. I mentioned this solution already in October last year. However, my problem is that the iPhone gets too hot and simply stops recording. Anyone else has this problem?
