Apple Watch 3 live features

Now that the Apple Watch 3 is with us and has LTE support, I'm thinking of replacing my old Garmin and buying one.

Questions I'd like answered are :

1. Is there any way to have live segments on the Apple watch 3? If not, is this being actively developed?

2. Is there any way to get audio prompts from the Strava app on apple watch 3, so that I can pre-load a route and the watch will prompt me where to go?

3. Are there audio prompts on the current apple watch app that gives you feedback on anything?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello everyone, even my watch series 3 does not display the heartbeat !!!
I use iSmoothrun on iphone and watch displays data including heartbeat detected directly by watch!
Strava what are you waiting to fix ???

  • @ Schreiber Tr

Thanks a lot for your help. Found this settings already enabled. Reseted it and tried it out again, still no heartrate visibly on Apple Watch anyway.

BTW: Works fine with Watch Activity App.

I think a fix from Strava is hardly required!

  • I just used my new Apple Watch 3 for a run while also wearing my Garmin. It worked great, distance was relativity close.
Question- Does the route map sync to RunGap from workout? I was able to sync the data and export to Strava using RunGap, but no route map. Any suggestions?

  • I can't get the heart rate to work in Strava on a series three. Uninstalling, then reinstalling now. All have permissions. Heart rate works fine in any other app except...Strava.

  • Regarding the motion and fitness difficulties,

I too had this issue but after uninstalling and reinstalling on my phone  it worked perfectly.

  • I am having same problem with no heartrate function in the strava app on my Apple watch 2... Heartrate function worked perfectly in strava until the latest Apple watch software update....

  • I'm the same, Apple series 3 watch, strava heart rate shows briefly then greys itself out.

I have been using the workout app for my runs and it works great, results into rungap fine but then when I share data from rungap to strava the stats become incorrect, times/splits inaccurate, it took a minute off my pace!.

Hence I wanted to use Strava direct but the heart rate greys out.

    Hope they sort this soon.

  • I find the current Strava App integration for the Apple Watch 3 rather limited.

    1. No way to configure what's displayed

    2. No way to do manual splits

    etc.

For now I'm using Nike+ and the Apple Workout app and using RunGap to share data.

I've also noticed when I export data to Strava, the it is less than accurate (wrong distance and pace).

  • Hi all,

I have a solution to the "no heart rate" issue with the Apple Watch 3 (and presumably 2). This worked for me and several others. Thanks to CS Tan and the Strava Support team:

    1. Uninstall and then reinstall both watch and iPhone strava app (remember to keep the data).

    2. Using your iPhone Strava app, pair the watch app to the iPhone app (more -> applications, series, and devices -> Connect a new device to Strava -> Apple Watch). Authorise (click on)

         a - Location Services

         b - Code of Conduct

         c - Motion & Fitness

         d - Turn on Notifications

e - DO NOT AUTHORISE "Sync with Health".

    3. Start the Strava watch app and start a run. You'll see the HR icon greyed out. Tap on this grey HR icon and the watch will display a message asking to enable HEALTH permissions. Now check on your phone and there should be a pop-up regarding this. Follow the setting prompts and complete the HEALTH permission link.

The heart rate should now appear, and will appear for all future recordings.

    Hope this helps,

  • I had the same issue. Steps below worked for me:

Uninstall Strava app from iPhone (this will also uninstall from Apple Watch).

    Install Strava app on iPhone.

Open Strava app on Apple Watch.

You should see a "Setup your Apple Watch with Strava" screen. Press "Get started".

    Accept *all* permissions.

Start an activity on Apple Watch.

Tap on greyed out heart (make sure you tap it correctly).

See heart rate number next to a pulsing heart icon.

  • I have a problem with the audio cues for the new update(v36). Used the app yesterday and the audio cues worked. Updated my app today and went on a run and the audio cues stop working. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling app and that didn’t seem to work. Any ideas to help fix this problem.

  • @Anthony same here. I tried uninstalling just the watch app, and both apps, but neither worked.

  • I've had the luck of discovering the bug during a marathon, Sunday. :-)
I've opened a ticket two days ago. They've told me that the bug is known and it will be fixed in the next release.
However, I've just installed the new release (v37) and the bug is still on.

Meanwhile I've removed the app, restarted the watch and the phone, reinstalled it, all with no success.

Maybe it will be fixed at v38. :-)

  • Seems to be fixed with version 39.

BTW I seem to get notifications about emails in this Strava group sporadically. I'm subscribed to a couple of topics, and today received emails for about 10 responses, but some that were posted weeks ago. Does anyone else have this happen to them?

  • Hey guys, I mainly use strava (with my iphone 7) and sometimes my garmin 500 for recording my rides and runs... I'd say 90% rides and 10% runs based on the activity that I do.

I'm at a cross roads as to whether I take the plunge and invest in an iwatch 3 with GPS/LTE so I no longer need to carry my iphone or use my garmin on the bike and have my watch record everything.

I also commute to work during the week with my bike and record those rides as commute rides with my phone currently.

How has the experience been using the strava app on the watch? Any ideas of any new major releases and enhancements/new features? I'd love to trial new routes around my area on some big rides but found that the garmin 500 struggled to 'guide' me... do you know if Strava would offer this in an upcoming release? (if I had scoped out someone elses 'loop' for a ride and then wanted to do the same loop with feedback from the watch providing directions (either through tapping or a visual/audio cue of some description?)

What is the battery life like on the iwatch 3 when recording long rides? Is it accurate? Would you say its' a genuine contender to basically 'throw away' the phone and the garmin for all rides and runs?

    Keen to hear your feedback...

    Ralph

  • please add "live segments" to apple watch. even as a premium option, I, and many others, are willing to pay for this functionality.

  • +1 I definitely want live segments on Apple Watch!

  • +2 for live segments on Apple Watch. I signed up for premium for this reason only. Then to realise it isn’t supported 🙄. I know the purists will probably use Garmin and other brands for tracking etc. But just look around so many casual riders and runners have Apple watches.

  • Can someone tell me if Strava on the Apple Watch 3 (w/ LTE) will automatically upload to Strava and does it include the GPS details when it does?

Curious what differences that App has between the Apple Watch 2 & 3 with GPS and the Apple Watch 3 (w GPS & LTE)

Does this really mean I live w/o my phone while riding?

  • If you use Strava on the Apple Watch and have bike computer (Elemnt BOLT) both tied to Apple Health will you get dual entries in Apple Health or will they merge??

If they don't which should I use?  BOLT?

  • Dave Martin, you can ride without your phone. I have been using Strava on my Apple Watch 3 w/ LTE and it will include the GPS and your heart rate data in the upload. It won't upload until it reconnects to your iPhone.

  • I do get audio announcements for splits with etc apple watch 3 (no LTE version). Hopefully you will add live segments and beacon for premium users too at some point. I don't want to go back to a fitness watch after using the apple watch and I don't see Garmin, Polar or Suunto making a smartwatch any time soon.

  • Yes, I use it without my phone too and i don't have the LTE version. It uploads the workout when I get home and it has the same type of metrics that my garmin vivoactive or 520 are recording +HR, except for live segments and beacon. I didn't try to use it for cycling, except with Zwift, where is practically my HRM. I don't know if it talks to other bluetooth sensors (speed, cadence, power). I know that the Strava app on the iPhone does, so in all likelihood the apple watch strava app may be able to do that as well. However, for cycling I prefer my metrics on the handlebars, where I can see them, rather than on my wrist.

  • @Darin Reeves

Thank You.   i’ll leave the phone and share the results tomorrow.  Happy to leave the  chest HRM and iphone behind.

  • On bike rides I can't figure out how to get the live statistics display when I start the trip on the Apple Watch (to track heart rate throughout my bike ride).  Can anyone help? Essentially my goal is to use the iPhone as a proxy for a bike computer.

So far what I know is:

    • No HR data but live stats display on the iPhone if you start the recording from the iPhone.
    • HR data but no live stats display on the iPhone if you start the recording from the Apple Watch.

    Maybe I'm missing something. :/

  • You know it’s a shame.
The Garmin app doesn’t need live connection. And AW4 with possibly to be connected doesn’t support segments. Shame on you Strava developers

  • @Elle, is there any update to support Live Features such as Live Segments on the Apple Watch? You last "official" comments has been in 2017. Maybe there is some progress on that or do IO just miss a setting on my end?

Thanks for a quick response in advance.

  • Dear Strava Team,

Are you listening to your users? Are you keeping your promises? And if so, why aren't live segments not supported yet from the Apple Watch? Is the user community of Apple Watch user not of interest to you?

I am a paying customer and my expectation is that you:

    1. Stick with your promises.

    2. React timely on posts to threads

    3. Keep the user community up-to-date

Currently, you are doing a great job to make me considering to switch to a different platform:

    - Long response times

    - Responses which do not fully embrace your issue

    - Time wasting back and forth conversations over weeks to solve an issue (basically I start questioning if that is at the heart of support or if it just about closing the ticket without a solution for the user)
