PR achievements on first attempt

Hello all,

We're releasing a slight change to our PR (personal record) achievements. Now, when you first attempt a new segment you will receive a PR. Before, this would only occur on the second attempt if you beat your PR.

Let us know if you have feedback for us.

  • NO.  Please stop this.  It makes no sense.  Yesterday, I did a mountain bike ride, and the activity was logged with almost 100 different segments.  My route was a mix of trails I had ridden before, with some new ones.  It is absurdly frustrating to look at a long list of PRs, and not be able to easily discern actual personal bests (e.g., rode that trail 10 times, and today, I was fastest), vs. first time attempt.  It makes the PR label absolutely meaningless.  Between this, and the ridiculous non-chronological feed, I have (sadly!) cancelled my Premium subscription.

Please bring back meaningful PRs, and a chronological feed, and I will reinstate my Premium subscription.

  • Terrible. And annoying. My first time on a segment should not be an "award/pR". The subsequent time should portray my new pR.

  • On 11/22 I voiced my ire with this system.  Folks, make sure and vote your opinion on all these comments you agree with.

Today rode a 34 mile trail I have never been on before.  I earned 61 PR's.

Hay Strava,  if you are not going to delete the feature, why don't you display them as GREEN so we know we don't need to waste our time opening them to see how much we bettered our last PR on that segment.

Or like I said last time make this feature optional by a selection in our PROFILE.

  • I have pm’ed Elie Anderson. Reqesting that she does her job and manages the comunity. That would make us feel better and more like we are valued customers.

  • Dear Elle, please explain why you bother to ask for feedback if you have no intention of taking any notice?

  • Hi. It needs to be a first attempt badge. I now cannot tell which segments are genuine personal records (over multiple attempts) which makes it harder to analyse performance.

  • I agree that it is absurd to issue a PR on a first attempt. It's like winning a prize in a game that no one else is playing. It's meaningless and takes away from finding real accomplishments. Please stop this feature and only show credit for improving time on a segment.

  • "Slight change"?

Please, let this go away just like the Year KOMs that had to die a couple years ago.  Calling it a first attempt is accurate, but a ride in a new area recently got me PRs on every segment - this is just wrong.

  • This feature is obnoxious. We don't need meaningless participation trophies for simply riding a segment. It makes the whole idea of PRs pretty meaningless, clutters the feet, and makes me a lot less interested in even looking at my rides. This is the kind of thing that has me spending a lot more time on Training Peaks and a lot less time on Strava.

  • So after Strava refused to comment on my ticket raised on this matter I have unfortunately felt compelled to withdraw my premium membership too like some others here. I canot continue to financially support a company who ignore my corespondance with them I'm afraid. I feel bad about doing it but their ignoring my ticket is just plain rude.

  • Please make it an option to change this ridiculous option. It makes it impossible to realise a genuine PR when riding a slightly different course to a previous one.

  • Strava, you have limited time to fix this before you will have lost your loyal users.

  • i'm assuming it's a coding issue. the boffins are trying to add some new and exciting feature and this PR for every new segment is just some side effect they can't fix so passing it off as an enhancement in the mean time while they try to recruit someone who can make the original coding intent a reality. ie, sell your fuck ups as features.

  • Good morning. Wonderful thing this Strava. I think getting a personal record for a first attempt devaules the personal record medal. I think it could be useful to have a first attempt badge of some sort. Thanks.

  • I hope this change get's reverted very soon. I've just moved to a new city and every single ride I do is a full gamut of PRs which is incredibly distracting for trying to discern which segments are new, and which I was actually faster over compared to a previous attempt. Lucky I have VeloViewer.

Don't be scared of trying new things Strava, just be bold enough to revert/amend changes when they don't turn out as expected.

  • Maybe Strava just wanted to get those PR counts up to make folks feel warm inside when they see their year-end videos! I imagine they'll feel obligated to keep it so people won't be sad next year when the number goes down.

For as much as Strava harps on being small with limited developer resources it is baffling why they spend them on un-requested updates like this and the poorly received feed update. Then they have no resources to fix them, just "monitor feedback".

At least it feels good to vent, so that is a feature they are providing me :)

  • "re: The issue with some top-10 trophies, KOMs, QOMs and CRs displaying as a PR instead has been resolved"

No it isn't..  I've just uploaded a ride that included 4 top-10s.   Two of them were given the correct trophy, but two were given a PR trophy.  I needed to do a Refresh Activity Achievements to get the correct trophy.

  • Hi Elle,

Saw your announcement from September 28 and really tried to be open minded by giving it a few months to bake in. It's just not working. The achievements are no longer useful. I don't even look at them anymore.

I hate this feature so bad that I read every single comment (6 pages) and voted most of them up. Also, at the time of this post, you are down to -73 on your announcement. So, you asked for feedback and you have a ton of it. Nearly all comments are against and the few comments for are not compelling. This is a great opportunity to thank everyone for their feedback and announce a reversion.

CAUTION: Many folks have suggested an explorer badge for new segments. If you do this, please, please, please do not include that count in the "Achievements" count. As many, many have pointed out, the problem is we cannot distinguish real achievements.

  • Please Strava make this go away!
A first time rise on a segment shouldnt get a PB, not until subsequent attempts give something to compare it to.

It is very annoying when you finish a ride amd have to filter through the achievements to pick out the genuinely earned ones from the first time ones.

Could it be made optional? Or maybe the achievement could have a different symbol?

Is anything at all going to be done about this? Is anyone listening?

  • The farce that is this ‘feature’ is highlighted even more now we have our Strava review of the year.

Such a huge number of PRs I’ve achieved this year, we’ll done me. If only they weren’t now meaningless.

  • Rode in a new city the other day and received over 50 PR's.  Value to me? ZERO.  This is such a monumental cluster*#ck.

BTW have cancelled my premium membership and actively looking for alternatives to Strava. Such a bummer.

  • Well we continue to be ignored. I just cancelled my premium membership. I here training peaks is good. Though frankly the data avalible on garmin connect is far superior and free.

  • it seems that most people commenting in this chain do not like the new segment = PR change.

    1. Create a second badge that does not count in the PR count

    2. Make the feature an option that we can turn off.

This is a seriously frustrating feature. I rode in a place that I'm still getting to know. Got a ton of trophies, only to be reminded that, no I wasn't really faster, there were just a lot of new segments. I'm at the point where I do not use the trophy feature very much.

The trophies were a key to my post ride with friends and a key motivator and reason for using Strava. This update has diluted the trophy value so much and shifted the equation so that Strava doesn't feel like a must for me.

Also, when can you provide an update on Strava's current thinking?

  • Great to hear that Strava have finally listened and are removing the PR for first attempts! Any chance you can also revert to feed back to chrono? Or at least give us the option to choose? Then I might consider going back to Premium. Carry on listening!
