# Run split graph shows slower lap with shorter bar

I have the latest version 21.0.0 of the mobile app and splits graph shows slower lap with shorter bar: it used be the other way around, faster lap with shorter bar and that is how it is displayed in screenshots in app store.

In 2013 we made a change to show faster pace increasing upwards and slower pace decreasing downwards. The old splits view on mobile did not follow this logic and conflicted with the the workout analysis graph right above it. This change allows us to consistently show split and pace information across mobile and web, as well as with other workout analytic tools that we offer.

• I think the chart being questioned is the splits chart on the mobile app. It doesn't lend itself to the argument proposed in the provided link as it's a bar chart not a line chart. My splits are now showing as positive splits and not negative splits. Happy to provide images to show the differences. It really doesn't make sense anymore that the chart column is longer, the shorter the time.

• That could make sense for the horizontal graphs if you clearly say (which you do) and that is labeling the paces on the left. Now it doesn't make any sense for the paces on the vertical line to have the shorter be longer. It's not going to be good sense of timing as what is all the way to the left vs all the way to the right. It just seems really backwards on the vertical bar graph as the longer it takes you, the shorter it is. Being able to tell when you negative split was easy before. The bar got shorter. Now the bar gets longer the faster you go? That makes no sense.

• Hello, Elle.  Let me begin by saying that while I understand the underlying logic to using a Quadrant 4 graph (pace increasing / time per mile falling towards as the y-axis goes up), I do believe that users are always more at ease using a graph based in Quadrant 1  (pace decreasing / time per mile rising towards as the y-axis goes up), since this is the graph type that most people are used to as it's used in 99.9% of the graphs we use in everyday life.  I've been a member of strava for years, and still find the Q4 graph, such as the graph that compares the history of pace for similar runs or the graph that shows the continuous pace, counterintuitive.

However, the bar graphs for the pace on mobile make even less sense and the logic that applied for using a Q4 graph in the other graphs does not apply to the pace chart.   The biggest problem is that there is no labeling of the chart at all, so there is no frame of reference for the runner.  The only frame of reference the runner has to interpret the chart is the time/mile that precedes each bar.  That time increases as the pace gets slower, and decreases when the pace gets faster.  It's only intuitive that the bar would also increase in length as the pace gets slower, and decrease when the pace gets faster, not the other way around.  If there was another frame of reference, or if it was presented in graph form with the distance on the x-axis and pace on the y-axis, similar to the other graphs, that would make more sense.

Right now, it's confusing because, just for example, let's say the pace "7:00" is represented by the arbitrary value of "7" on the graph.  Then, the pace of "8:00" is represented by the relative-to-7 length of "6" on the graph.  You can see how this is confusing without the chart giving more explanation.

• The new view doesn't make any sense... makes it very difficult to see pace progression on the graph.  Pleeease change it back to the way it was!

• I've just noticed this too. I have to say I preferred it the previous way around (shorter bars for the faster splits). Did Strava talk to a selection of users around this topic? Additionally I'd have thought that the majority of interaction with Strava is via the mobile apps (not that I'd know, its just an assumption).

• Joining in to say that for the average user, this just doesn't make sense. Somehow I'm running negative splits but the bars representing my pace get--longer? It just seems like Strava didn't actually take to any normal users about this. As with the changes to the timeline, this could easily be solved by offering users an option to switch back to the old view.

• I agree with everyone above. Slower pace showing as a shorter bar is just counter intuitive to look at. Good data visualisation allows the viewer to extract meaning from it at a glance, but this is just plain confusing to look at. Please, please change it back.

• Throwing my 2c in:

On mobile view, in splits, this doesn't make sense. I've tried to get my head around it and my friends keep saying 'but this isn't how graphs work'. Most frustratingly, it means at a glance the data is meaningless. In any other view, perhaps, but here it defies logic.

The blog post linked isn't referring to this.

In the 'workout analysis' view it may make slightly more sense because of the overlay... but not in splits.

• I agree that the split time graph is no longer intuitive.  This is not a matter of getting used to the new format, it is a matter of basic data presentation that you are measuring time per mile, which decreases with negative splits, not increases.  hopefully you will change it back.

• I agree entirely. The new split layout is unhelpful. Pleae consider going back to representing faster splits with shorter bars.

As with all apps, changing things that work is not always helpful or appreciated by users.

• Comparing the logic behind the horizontal line graph showing pace OVER time with the bar graph showing INDIVIDUAL splits just doesn't make sense.  As time moves forward, your pace is either going up (a larger number) or it is going down (a smaller number) so it stands to reason that slower paces actually go up on the Y scale.

Splits are different though.  Each split is unique and technically bears no relationship with the split before or after, it is merely a bar visually representing the time one mile or kilometer took.  The bar size actually represents TIME then and not speed/pace (which is what is going up & down on a line graph).  So if I run a mile in 5:00mins and then run a mile in 10:00mins, the bar representing my second split should be twice the size because it was twice the time.

There should be no programmatic reason that splits cannot be displayed as they were previously while you maintain the current horizontal line graph for pace over time.

Please change it back.

• Agree the new splits bar chart is counter-intuitive - if it's representative of the pace, less time equals shorter bars - as it was previously, surely?

• I totally agree and do not know a single person who likes the new graph which shows the faster you go the longer it shows.
Totally backwards approach. Please can we have the old graph back.

• The Intuitive understanding of the graph is that it is breaking the activity down into Splits and therefore,  the bars would Logically represent Split Times. The Faster the Split the shorter the Time. It's pretty simple Faster Pace = Less Time = Shorter bars.

What you intended doesn't really matter, it is how it was being used that matters. For many of us, it was an easy graphical way to quickly look at an activity and assess how things progressed.  When Consistency breaks what is naturally intuitive maybe it's best to go with the natural flow.

I always looked for negative splits by pulling up that chart. I have to say that was the FIRST thing I looked at on this app. Now, it just ticks me off.

PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK.

• Let's look at this logically.

To Split something is to divide something. In this case, the Activity Distance is being divided/Split into miles, kilometers, or some unit of measure.

The chart clearly shows its intended purpose by its Title "SPLITS".

Under that, we see the descriptions of the included data; MI, PACE, & ELEVATION.  These designations are 'Centered' above each corresponding data column. However, there is NO Name or Description above the Bars. It's left blank.

IF the Bars are merely a graphical representation of PACE,  then (for consistency, the thing it seems you are worried about), why is the description "PACE" not centered above the BARS and PACE numbers?

As it is, the user is left to decide what those Bars represent. To me, and it appears many others, the BARS represent TIME, and this is where logic takes over.

More of anything is usually graphically shown as..., well, MORE.  More pie, more inches, more TIME!

Please reconsider your stance on this.

• Hate this bar chart. I've given it a few weeks to see if I get used to it. I don't. It's just wrong! PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK!

• It rather takes the fun away from scrolling through people's detonations on ill-paced marathon attempts. Please bring back the old bars..

• Of course they didn’t “talk to” or ask average/normal users about this change. Just follow the comments above — and probably below by now. We unanimously despise a bar graph that shows faster pace with a longer bar ... obviously because it makes no sense. The question is how long will it take Strava to appropriately change it back to a correct intuitive display based on overwhelming feedback.

• The new style is so confusing. PLEASE PUT IT BACK! And revert to having activities in chronological order whilst you’re at it. Strava used to be GREAT, you’re making it worse for no reason.

• I'm so confused by this new view it doesn't make any  sense to me... I'm glad this forum post exists and I'm not the only one upset with this change.

If you want to have continuity across devices or whatever at least make this a configurable option.

• This is fundamentally wrong and the rationalization in defense of it makes me question the judgment of the Strava product team. When I taught bar graphs to 9th graders in Algebra 1, a graph like this would be partial credit at best. Congrats on messing up a useful graph by applying a poor solution to a problem no one had.
